MORE ICELAND PHOTOS NEWSLETTER DEVELOPING POTENTIAL CELEBRATING SUCCESS EASTER 2017 ICELAND 2017 On Thursday 16th February 2017 Mrs Smith Mrs Jones Mr Beaney Mr Lomas Mr Ooi and a group of fifty Cansfield students set off from Manchester airport on the short plane journey across the Atlantic Ocean to Reykjavik for a trip of a lifetime to the land of fire and ice Iceland AMA INTERNATIONAL KARATE CHAMPION Year 9 student Amy Kershaw achieved 1st place in Freestyle Kata at the AMA International Karate Championships held in Sheffield She is now a Gold Medal International Champion The competition was attended by over 1000 people Fifty of them some of whom were adults were in Amy s category A great achievement Amy Congratulations CLIMBING ORIENTEERING On Thursday 9th February some Year 11 Cansfield students visited the Westview Climbing Centre near Preston as part of the PE GCSE course Students found the session to be an ideal environment to demonstrate their climbing skills On Thursday 16th February GCSE PE students visited the Anderton Centre at Rivington where they tested their map and compass skills as they navigated around the fun but challenging orienteering courses 88 CANSFIELD CANSFIELD During the trip the Cansfield staff and students went on to see some of Iceland s stunning waterfalls At Seljalandsfoss they managed to walk along the slippery path and behind the waterfall to gain an amazing view of the beauty and the power of the waterfall Students and staff also visited one of Iceland s most popular tourist destinations the Blue Lagoon This naturally heated pool helped everyone to relax and unwind Sunday was a full day of activities which started with lava tube caving The next stop was an old volcanic crater now filled with water The volcano was last active 2000 years ago The group then made their way to Iceland s most dramatic waterfall Gullfoss The students were amazed at the scale of this magnificent waterfall As lunchtime approached they made their way to one of only three active geysirs in the world The students and teachers waited with cameras poised as the naturally heated water erupted 10m into the air One of the final stops of the journey around Iceland s most active region was Thingvellir The group walked through the large opening between the North American plate and the Eurasian plate Cansfield staff and students returned to Reykjavik their journey was over The students had experienced some of the most impressive natural wonders of the world DEVELOPING POTENTIAL CELEBRATING SUCCESS Headteacher Mr M Southworth Old Road Ashton in Makerfield Wigan WN4 9TP Cansfield s five day adventure started in the south of the island First stop was one of Iceland s magnificent black sand beaches Students and staff were able to see some of the volcanic basalt columns and the caves The journey continued to one of the highlights of the entire trip a walk up one of Iceland s many glaciers Solheimajokull After being fitted with crampons and ice axes the group started the trek up the glacier to its many wonderful ice sculptures and deep crevasses Having driven through the Eyjafjallajokull flood plain to see the destructive power of the famous volcano they then continued on to the small town of Vik T 01942 727391 F 01942 720711 E enquiries admin cansfield wigan sch uk W www cansfield wigan sch uk Please see the back cover for more photos CANSFIELD 5

THE SCIENCE WHIZZ BANG CHEMISTRY SHOW A group of Year 7 pupils participated in the Christmas Science Whizz Bang Chemistry show at Winstanley College Students were able to take part and also observe some magical Christmas chemical reactions eventually producing a Christmas Chemist tree They made silver reaction baubles glow in the dark tree lights and saw some giant elephant toothpaste So much fun CANSFIELD GYMNASTS The following pupils represented Cansfield at the Northwest Gymnastics competition at Robin Park and were very successful Joe Carney Libby Heaton Alex Avramovic Year 7 Katie Dursley and Kiera Heaton Year 8 Harry Latham Year 10 Results Joe Carney and Alex Avramovic under 14 Mixed Pair Northwest Champions Joe Carney boys under 14 Northwest Tumbling Champion Katie Dursley girls under 14 Northwest Tumbling Champion Harry Latham boys over 14 Northwest Tumbling Champion Kiera Heaton and Libby Heaton came 5th in the girls pairs very closely followed by Katie Dursley and Alex Avramovic who came 6th out of 24 pairs a huge category CHRISTMAS HAMPERS Following on from the success of the Cansfield Christmas Hamper in the last few years students once again excelled themselves in providing food items for the Cansfield Christmas Hamper Appeal 2016 The result was a vast pile of food and treats which generously filled 51 huge boxes Staff and students then visited residents suggested by Age Concern Wigan and Leigh Hospice and the Wigan homeless charity The Brick to deliver the gifts The people who received the hampers were overwhelmed by the generosity of the presents and passed on their thanks to all the Cansfield pupils who had taken part in the campaign ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE At the beginning of February Year 11 students collected their Anything is Possible Cansfield Hoodie This symbolised the 11 weeks to go countdown until the start of their GCSE exams and it was an absolute pleasure to see so many students eagerly anticipating the delivery of their personalised hoodie Time will pass so very quickly and students must now begin to realise that their final chapter at Cansfield has arrived We wish them all the very best and leave them with the following important message Anything is possible and with the right mind set and determination you have the opportunity of a lifetime waiting for you Joe Alex Katie and Harry will now be going to the National Schools Finals in May in Stoke MEDICAL MAVERICK S WORKSHOP A group of Year 10 pupils participated in a medical workshop They gave themselves a health check blood pressure heart rate blood oxygen content and peak flow and performed some medical procedures such as keyhole surgery intubation and recording and printing ECGs One of the highlights was trying to high five each other whilst wearing pathology goggles 2 CANSFIELD TEAM CANSFIELD UPDATE Volleyball Year 7 girls were Silver Medal winners in the local Schools Volleyball Tournament They played against mainly Year 8 teams and were amazing Indoor Athletics Year 7 girls came second at the local Schools Indoor Athletics Tournament They just missed out on first place and representing Wigan by the finest margin A huge well done Netball Year 7 8 9 and 10 netball teams have all done us proud in their weekly matches They have run their socks off and improved massively Football Year 7 8 girls won Bronze Medals A massive well done CANSFIELD 3

TEENS AND TODDLERS Teens and Toddlers is a programme where teenagers mentor young children whilst also building the life skills and self belief they need to succeed at school in work and in the community Cansfield Year 10 students have recently been mentoring children in Reception at St Thomas CE Primary School Firstly the Teens were paired up with children who had specific needs and would benefit from some extra support The group of children had needs such as difficulty in sharing difficulty socialising and talking to others or would just benefit from a bit of one to one support with activities CPR TRAINING FOR STUDENTS In this country 30 000 people a year have a cardiac arrest out of hospital less than 1 in 10 survive In Norway where compulsory first aid is taught in schools this drops to 1 in 4 saving around 5000 lives every year In November Cansfield was given several CPR training manikins from the British Heart Foundation to help train a nation of lifesavers This has enabled us to train around 100 Year 8 students in CPR so far The rest of Y8 will be trained this term The Reception Teacher from St Thomas said The children from Reception who accessed this scheme have come on leaps and bounds with the extra support that Cansfield Teens have given them They have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions We as a school value these Teens and Toddler sessions the children look forward to them and I as a teacher have witnessed the Teens grow in confidence when interacting with our children WAKEFIELD TRAINING My name is Ellie Wilson and I am a Year 10 student at Cansfield Along with Joe Carney in Year 7 I train at the Seagulls Gymnastics Club in Wigan which has led us both to the British Gymnastic Tumbling Pathway On the 21st September 2016 a letter was received by the club informing us that we had been chosen for the Tier Two British Gymnastics Tumbling Pathway and our first training taster day would be the 25th September The Pathway is for individuals who have been selected from all over the UK for their progress in British Gymnastics semi finals finals over the last few years and in our most recent finals Joe came first and I came third The individuals chosen are trained by high level coaches including some European coaches These coaches have very high expectations and work at very high levels but also offer extra tips and advice to help us improve For myself and Joe this has meant so much Whilst at Wakefield we trained from 9 00 a m to 1 00 p m and were expected to practise all our skills With the availability of different equipment and stations such as air track full length tumble and foam pit we were able to learn and practise new skills too These included learning doubles in different shapes and Joe doing multiple twist and skills This was an amazing experience and we both thoroughly enjoyed this Pathway Hopefully this will lead us to new opportunities and enable us to follow in the footsteps of Jonathan Rimmer an ex student from Cansfield who recently won silver in his first ever Team GB International Tumbling competition By Ellie Wilson Y10 4 CANSFIELD TEAM TOILE Cansfield s Year 8 Textile students have had the opportunity to develop their communication skills learn about shaping techniques and hone their designs whilst working together to create a toile Competing against their peers they aimed to excel in one of the three following categories Most creative design Most viable product The Teacher award for construction Well done to Abigail Alyssa Luke and Oliver for their fantastic effort LIVE N LEARN Live N learn are a company that deliver bespoke learning workshops tailored towards pupil needs and have a very successful history around mind set for exams As part of our preparation for KS4 Summer Examinations some Year 11 Cansfield students have benefited from further preparation and support in enabling them to be fully prepared for the challenge of assessment Mindset for Exams is a fun interactive workshop from Live N Learn that instils confidence resilience and personal responsibility in young people This inspires them to achieve their full potential and gain the qualifications life skills essential for success With this workshop Cansfield students engaged from the outset and developed A Growth Mindset Confidence and resilience Vital study skills Independent learning Effective time management CANSFIELD 5
