A Note from the Superintendent
I hope you had an enjoyable spring break! It is
hard to believe that it is already April. It might be
safe to say we avoided the inconvenience of
having to make up any school days due to
inclement weather this year.
This month, students will be taking the PARCC
assessment in grades 3-8. Fifth grade students will
take the PARCC test using computers. As in the
past, students in grades 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 will take the
test using a paper/pencil version. In the future, all
students will use computers to take the
PARCC test.
As we wind down, we look forward to many end-of-
year activities, including the Hynes Science Expo,
the Golfs Got Talent show, spring concerts, and 8
th
grade graduation.
Please consider participating in our summer
enrichment programs. These programs will give
your child fun experiences in STEM-related
activities.
Thank you to our PTA members for your
outstanding contributions this year. Please take the
time to review the available positions that are
needed for the coming year.
Be sure to complete online registration
for students in grades 1-8.
Dr. Beth Flores, Superintendent

Using the Engineering Design Process to guide their
thinking, students designed and built their own balloon-
powered car, exploring ways to make it go faster and farther.
Building a balloon-powered rocket car provides opportunies for invesgaon,
team work, and developing design skills. While focusing on science and technology, the acvity is a useful
vehicle for teaching numeracy and literacy.

During the third quarter, eighth-grade students built on their
knowledge of World War II through an in-depth study of the Holocaust.
Using the historical novel Daniel's Story by Carol Matas as a common
text, students discussed, researched, and wrote about this important
piece of history and its relevance today. Their studies were enriched by
viewing the Academy-award winning foreign lm Life is Beauful
and vising the Illinois Holocaust Museum where they heard a
Holocaust survivor share his story.

At a museum, it can really
open your eyes. For example,
we could see the true pains of
the Holocaust much more
[clearly] with respect when
interacting with examples and
recreations rather than reading
about it in a book. Matt S.

The NTDSE special educaon cooperave provides special
educaon supports to the nine elementary districts located
within Niles Township and ensures a high quality
educaon for all students. As a member of the NTDSE cooperave, Golf School District receives a
variety of educaonal supports.
This year Hynes welcomed a satellite classroom for students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. We are
thrilled that many of our Golf students are in their home school. NTDSE teacher, Rachael Thanas, and
Hynes 3rd grade teacher, Katy Casleton, bring their peer buddy group together
during lunch recess every week for sensory-oriented acvies that support peer
interacon and foster self-regulaon.
