Not very attractive! This bathroom needs a major facelift, ASAP. While I would love to just subway tile the entire thing, I am limited by my clients budget. I was trying to think of an idea which would jazz up a simple tile, and give my clients a bathroom that would really stand out from the pack. Oh, what to do, what to do? While in Home Depot, staring sadly at the cheap tile options that were left open to me, I had a most wonderful idea! Horizontal Stripes! I chose a large 13 inch tile (only $1.50/ square foot) that comes in both a gray and white option, and I instructed the contractor to create horizontal stripes by layering the gray and white tiles all the way up to the ceiling. After having this epiphany, I quickly went on to Pinterest to look for images of what I was envisioning, and I loved what I saw! While these are not necessarily the exact types of tile that we will be using, the pattern is the same. Tiling the bathroom in a horizontal stripe lends such a graphic punch to the space, at no additional cost! It’s a win-win situation. While I chose a gray and white palette, the stripe can be done in any combination of colors that you so desire. If you want to be really bold, try black and white! This is such a fresh and modern look and I guarantee that it will work in your bathroom too! Chaviva is a design blogger and Interior Decorator. She remembers a time when certain roads did not yet exist and the Jewish community was small and succinct. As a mother of three, she raised her family in a growing town and watched as the Five Towns and Far Rockaway community flourished and thrived into what it is today. This August will mark Clapman’s 29th anniversary as a Far Rockaway resident. She currently works as a first grade teacher at Yeshiva Ketana of Long Island. Elana Dure: What attracted you to the Five Towns and Far Rockaway neighborhood so many years ago? Yocheved Clapman: At the time my husband was learning in Sh’or Yoshuv. most part people try to stay within that ilk of a warm community. It’s just normal for a community that grows that big to lose the hands-on ability it had when there were so few people. ED: Did anything stand out to you when you first moved here? YC: At that time I didn’t really know the community, I just knew that I was very warmly welcomed. My only frame of reference at that time was Sh’or Yoshuv. I didn’t know Far Rockaway at all. ED: What positive qualities did you see develop over the years in the community? YC: New schools came in, which is a sign of the times that we have that many children to fill those buildings. Also, there were a lot of chessed projects born within the Far Rockaway-Five Towns community and they have branched out to other communities. Years ago we didn’t even have Achiezer here. We didn’t have a lot of community places because we were such a small community. You kind of had to help yourself. Now that the community got larger, it would be difficult to exist without these community organizations because they help be the nucleus of the area. ED: How do you think this community differs from the one you grew up in? YC: I grew up in Kew Gardens. Now this is a metropolis in comparison, but Kew Gardens was also a very aesthetically pretty neighborhood, very quiet, and an extremely close community. When I came here it was very comforting because I was coming into the same kind of feelings. ED: Do you think the present community still has the same welcoming nature you mentioned earlier? YC: Since that’s how I came into the community, that’s honestly how I like to treat others. But sometimes when things get very big – which Far Rockaway did – you lose that element a little bit. I think for the ED: Was Central Avenue always as booming as it is now? YC: At that time, Central Avenue was more boutique-y in the way that you didn’t necessarily find a bargain on Central Avenue. www.fivetownslink.com www.fivetownslink.com Individuals in our Community dors realized that you want to keep these people in town and not necessarily let them go back to places where they would get a better deal. They made it more attractive for the mainstream consumer. ED: That’s interesting. What do you personally think of the neighborhood’s expansion? YC: At times it makes it more difficult to know everybody in the community. In years past—this is 25 to 30 years ago— if one person made a kiddush, just like in any other small community, it did not matter where you were socioeconomically or where you were on the frumkeit spectrum. Everybody came by to wish mazel tov because that’s just what small town people do. Now, with the influx of community members, people more or less stick to their own shuls. As long as these shuls make themselves a small community and include other shuls to make it a small town feeling, then we’re good. ED: Do you feel like you personally helped contribute to the neighborhood at all? YC: I don’t necessarily know how much. I think that every person does add. I feel that teaching within the community and seeing your kids locally is an accomplishment. It’s not like a fireman, policeman, or anything like that, but I definitely feel that each person contributes in their own way. ED: Do you have any hobbies that you like to do on the side? www.fivetownslink.com NUTRITION &YOU The ABC's of Nutrition As we are preparing our children to go back to school, we try to instill in them to eat healthy foods. If you’re like most moms, you’ve probably said to your kids numerous times-“Don’t forget to take your vitamin!” or “Eat your vegetables- they’re packed with vitamins!” But what is so important about the vitamins that we eat after all? Vitamins are necessary for normal bodily function, growth, and maintenance of body tissue. Since our bodies can’t make a majority of these vitamins on its own, we must get vitamins from outside sources such as the food we eat or by taking a supplement. The best way to consume the required vitamins is by eating a variety of healthy foods. However, for those who follow a more restrictive diet, a multivitamin supplement may be necessary. www.fivetownslink.com www.fivetownslink.com SINCE YOU ASKED Dear Rosie, I'm a 16 year old girl who has 4 younger siblings. My parents are good people, but they can be extremely harsh and cruel sometimes. They scream at us for petty things almost every day and say very hurtful things. I told my best friend about it and she said that it is emotional abuse. I don't think she's right. I have always been told that every parent yells at their kids. Maybe not every day, but everyone gets mad sometimes. I really didn't even think there was such a thing as emotional abuse. I don't know what to do. I have been treated like this almost my entire life. I didn't think that it was abuse. Am I being emotionally abused? Confused Dear Confused, The answer to your question is yes, it seems like your friend is correct. Because your parents have been doing this on a regular basis, as often as almost every day, it quali ies as verbal/emotional abuse. Their lack of control isn't normal. I know it's not an easy thing to hear but acknowledging emotional abuse for what it is, will help you create a healthier future for yourself. 24 • FIVE TOWNS LINK • 516.331.1885 Your parents' anger and frustration have nothing to do with you and your siblings. It's their own issues that are causing them to constantly lash out at you. The problem with this kind of abuse though, as opposed to physical abuse, is that although it is damaging, it is often not taken seriously. It should be taken seriously though, because it can be just as painful and damaging as physical abuse. If there are family members or close friends who can intervene and help your parents to see how damaging their lack of control is and convince them to get help, you should conide in them. It might also be a good idea for you and your siblings to spend as much time as possible with friends in healthier families. This will keep you away from the negativity of your parents and enable you to see what normal family interactions are like. In addition, if the school you attend has a social worker on staff, it would be bene icial for you and your siblings to see him/her so that you can learn ways to cope in this tough situation. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Rosie Rosie is a Therapist as well as a wife and mother. Please submit your questions for Rosie to rosie@ ivetownslink.com FIVE TOWNS LINK • 516.331.1885 • 25
