Melissa Jordan, Cambourne, Cambridge
About me and Readers that Care
Hi my name is Melissa Jordan I am an indepedent seller of children’s books. I would like to
introduce to you my unique collection of books for 0 to 14 years. I passionately believe every
child or young person should have the opportunity to love books and reading. Thankfully there
are so many great children’s books, that there really is a books for every child.
As a mum of two, and a Barefoot Books Ambassador for a number of years I discovered just how
much fun exploring picture books can be. As my daughter grew older we found the move from
school readers to chapter books a tricky one. She is a good reader who loves books but we
struggled to find something that interested her. Had I known then what I do now about fiction
for 6 to 9 years and 8 to 12 years that transition would have been a lot easier. We did however
get there in the end, due to a combination of my persistence (and her’s) to not stop till we found
something of interest, and a lucky coincidence of a CBBC drama of ‘Hetty Feather’ based on the
book by Jacqueline Wilson. In that one book we learnt much about what it is that makes books
interesting to her. Which goes to show how finding the right book can make such a difference.
I have always loved children’s books. It is this together with what I have learnt as a Barefoot
Books Ambassador and as a parent which has driven my enthusiasm to set up my own business
to bring you a curated collection of children’s books. So that you and your child can laugh,
discover, learn and have fun reading great stories and non-fiction books, and your independent
readers can find books they want to read.
About my book selection
At Readers that Care I aim to provide helpful advice and a curated collection of children’s
books for 0 to 14 year olds. If you need any advise or recommendation on what would suit
your children please do not hesitate to ask. My collection includes:
I. Stories which are:
set in ‘real’ landscapes, where you feel like you are really there: on the coast, in the
countryside or in the forest.
are set in ‘specific’ historical periods, for the child that likes ‘real’ stories and/or are
fascinated by history.
connect children to other countries and people and which help them develop empathy and
II. Diverse types and styles of books, which include:
beautifully illustrated picture books
wordless picture books
unique non-fiction books
chapter books for different ages and abilities, includes a selection of high interest
shorter chapter books.
A word about Chapter books
Moving onto chapter books can be an exciting or daunting time, depending on the child, and the
books available to them. Some children once they have made the transition to chapter books will
read any book they can lay their hands on. For others they are more particular and may need
some extra help in navigating their way to finding stories they like. Whatever your child’s starting
point I have gathered together a unique selection of chapter books, so you can find something
your 6 to 14 year olds wants to read. In addition to the chapter books featured in this catalogue I
aim to have at any one time 20+ additional one off titles to choose from. Because I firmly believe
the best way to get children reading is to give them CHOICE. If you need any suggestion on
what would suit the child or children in your life please do not hesitate to ask.

Wordless picture books
There is something extra special about a Wordless picture book. They are great for reading
together and sharing with children of different ages, you can take it in turns to tell part of the
story, and you can tell a different story each time. The pictures give so much to talk about. The
images can help the reader understand feeling and emotion in a story, so are great for building
empathy and understanding.
