2 WWW.SAOBSERVER.COM - SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 THE PRESSING NEEDS OF THE EASTSIDE the children that live in it. This is the perfect description of Mr. Rangel and his sons emulate the love their father shows and are so proud to be a part of this annual event. By: Stephanie Zarriello There are so many needs on the Eastside of San Antonio. The community needs sidewalks, better housing, job opportunities, and many other needs including making sure that our children have what is needed for school including shoes that fit. This is one thing that a very special man provides for year after year - shoes. For the last 18 years Mr. Adam Rangel and the Rangel family has been providing shoes to children in his community and has no plans on stopping. Mr. Rangel, the second youngest son out of seven, in growing up had a much smaller shoe size than his brothers. Not being the oldest or even the second oldest but a younger sibling, I am sure we all know all too well the way it used to work, it was the ‘hand me downs’ that kept us clothed. Those were just the times when the father of the family was probably the only provider and nights out to dinner were reserved for very, very special occasions and driving through a fast food restaurant was a planned event. Although we all were used to these times, Mr. Rangel on the other hand had a sort of comparable experience yet very different. He remembers going to bed hungry and waking up having to wear his brother’s hand me down shoes, but there was one problem- his brother’s shoes were just too big for his foot, 4 sizes too big. Mr. Rangel made them work and his experiences led he and his three sons to work together to bring hundreds of pairs of brand new “fitted” shoes to children of all ages. Every year this is an emotional event for Mr. Rangel, as he reminisces about having a lot of slip and slide room Mr. Rangel thank you for your presence, your community initiatives, support and last but not least your heart. Your heart is gold and always remember that you have hundreds of pairs of bright shiny shoes running, skipping, and playing all around the community on the children of its future, thank you. inside his childhood shoes. As I spent my first moments speaking to Mr. Rangel (I am going to be honest here) I did not expect anything but “Yes, this is the 10,000th year and grab a soda if you’d like they’re only .75 in the back.” No. No. No. I didn’t get that, I was speaking to a man who remembers, as if it were yesterday, whose emotions told of the little 7 year old boy wearing his brothers shoes that were 4 times too big and yet he had HUNDREDS of pairs of new shoes surrounding him, from Nikes to Adidas and from pink and purple to green and blue. And do not think for one second there was a child left without a new pair of shoes that did not fit, Mr. Rangel had that covered also. For any child that could not fit a pair of shoes at the event, they were given a gift card to Academy so they could go purchase the right size shoe that Mr. Rangel knew would be so very important. And as for those empty tummies- he filled them up too with free hotdogs, soda and chips for everyone! As the children’s number were called they lined up to go into the array of glistening colors and the smell you smell when surrounded by new shoes, yet there is a catch. NO parents allowed! You read that right, no parents. Mr. Rangel has so many intricate details planned into the way the event is run to touch every child’s soul who leaves that building. The children shop through all the bright new shoes and they pick the shoes THEY want, the ones that make their eyes as big as they can get. It does not stop there, after they pick the chosen shoe they are escorted by a Bexar County Judge to a row of seats to be fitted by the Judge to ensure the child’s shoe choice is really a perfect fit (thank you Judges your verdict in putting a smile on the many, many children last weekend). A soul t o u c h i n g , community blessed event that each one of those children will remember and tell the story to their grandchildren one day. As a community we face a lot of struggles and obstacles, yet we have angels in our midst. Here we have a person who loves his community and P.O. WWW.SAOBSERVER.COM - SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 3 If you read the cover story I am sure you are smiling that there are good things happening within this community. Their are really good people willing to help and love a stranger. Most don't know this of the Eastside of San Antonio but this community has deep rooted beliefs in community. We have so many community centers and outreach programs and giving back within ourselves that we should take some time this week to remember that if we haven't. That does not mean we are ignorant of everything going on in and around us community and nation. Although it is pretty important to impress upon ourselves and others that we are a united front and that whatever we face there is light like Mr. Rangel. If anyone has any questions or just any type of issue our phones and emails are open to you so we can be your voice.

WWW.SAOBSERVER.COM - SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 4 ‘DIFFERENT RACISM’ Is Donald Trump Right? Do Democrats Like Lloyd Doggett Use A Different Kind Of Racism? By Michael Tucker Inalienable: Incapable of being alienated, surrendered, or transferred. MerriamWebster Dictionary (2004). Proverbs 27:5 in the Bible says that "Open rebuke is better than secret love," which is another way of saying, "however you feel about me, just be the same in public as you are in private." This is especially relevant because of those White politicians who don't mind taking pictures with you when they need your support, but behind closed doors they hate you; and wholeheartedly resent you for daring to ask for their help if you're Black. This, I believe, is the type of politician that U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett might be: he likes you as long as his White friends like you; but if he sees White people wronging you, don't waste your time asking for his help. After all, helping African Americans comes with certain political risks, and Lloyd Doggett might feel that U.S. Constitutional protections are for Whites only. The bottom line however, is that the U.S. Declaration of Independence is explicit when it says that, as U.S. citizens, African Americans are endowed with "inalienable rights" to Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Furthermore, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says that African Americans cannot be deprived of freedom or property without "due process of law." Now, Mr. Doggett will tell you exactly the same thing until one of his Confederate friends says that because you are Black, that part about "inalienable rights" doesn't apply to you. And when you challenge that pretext, Congressman Doggett gets as quiet as a church mouse and refuses to talk about it. Such is the case now, for it has been pointed out to Mr. Doggett that in 1987 the Texas Judiciary put a discriminatory system in place to railroad poor Blacks and other minorities into the penal system. The evidence supporting that allegation is so glaring that Mr. Doggett won't publicly deny it, yet because it mainly affects Blacks, he won't help dismantle it either! You get that? A White U.S. Congressman with many minority constituents does not deny that Black people are being victimized by the system, yet refuses to do anything about it because the majority of the victims are Black. Doggett therefore treats the "inalienable rights" of Black citizens the exact same way that racists did when they segregated the society. In other words, "all you get is what we provide for the "colored people." If you are Black, don't ask me to fight for the same "inalienable rights" for you that I fight for on behalf of White people."' Lloyd Doggett's performances are reserved for segregated audiences. Now Donald Trump has said that Democrats like Doggett use Black people to get elected and then discard them right after the election. Mr. Trump would probably say that Lloyd Doggett doesn't mind living off of Black peoples tax dollars, just don't ask him to do his job of protecting the "inalienable rights" of Black Americans. For, it is now quite clear that the systemic racism put into effect by the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals was meant to re-deprive Black Americans of those gains realized through the efforts of the Civil Rights Movement. The Courts' ruling in Meshell vs State (739 S.W. 2nd 246) reinstituted a system of "Jim Crow" through the judicial process which deprived Blacks of the rights to vote, to obtain gainful employment, to secure decent housing, and to own a firearm; all of which were secured through the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Of course, all of those rights are taken away when one is convicted of a felony. Mr. Doggett probably feels that he doesn't have a dog in this fight because of the side of racism which says that "I don't want you to be equal with me or my people." And, although he won't verbalize it, Mr. Doggett, as well as many other White southern politicians would probably love to tell their Black constituents, "I don't care how close you get, just don't get too big," or "I don't care how big you get, just don't get too close." Maybe or maybe not. But, Mr. Doggett should be aware of this: we are not going to let this issue fall by the wayside; we will get justice! And, as the Proverb implies, if you are a racist Mr. Doggett, please come out of the closet; for we would rather have you curse us to our face than pretend that you love us on the "down low!"

WWW.SAOBSERVER.COM - SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 7 WHAT ABOUT ABUSE? Police Abuse Not Covered In Police Union Contract By Mario Marcel Salas The problem with police abuse is still not cleared up as a result of a short sighted response by City Council. Last week the city council passed the controversial SAPOA (San Antonio Police Officers Association) contract after months of fighting and name calling. The worst part of the contract involves the discipline of SAPD officers accused of violating their oath to protect and serve. The contract actually does little to protect citizens from abusive police officers in that the past record of a police officer cannot be used after a certain amount of time in disciplinary proceedings. Without going into those specifics it is obvious to any observer that if you cannot look at a person's past record then how can you demonstrate a pattern of misconduct if one exists. This part of the contract was a complete sham and the fact that it passed by a 9-2 vote is an indication that a lot of political money was laid out to various council members. San Antonio has a long history of police abuse going back at least to the murder of Bobby Jo Phillips in 1968, and the rogue brutal officers of that era. Many remember of being savagely beaten by SAPD Sgt. Bill Wheilbacher in the graveyard next to St. Gerard's High School on the city's East Side in the 1960s. Nothing was done in either case and little or nothing done over the current time frame in the case of Marquise Jones and recently to young black females being falsely arrested at a Whataburger on FM 78 by Sheriff's Deputies. There was the case of Webb Boyd in the 1980s and Hector Santoscoy as well. Seems like nothing has changed, as the last bastions of legalized racism seem to have hidden themselves in some areas of law enforcement and in the justice system itself. This is all the more reason for the community to monitor and take film footage of all police activity, and to file a complaint when one is abused. Complaints should be filed immediately and knowing your rights when stopped by overly aggressive police officers is important. You do not have to answer any question that a police officer asks. In fact, most legal experts agree that answering any question may be a ploy to start an argument by an out of control officer. Stay calm at all times. I would not role the window down all of the way, nor get out of the car. It is a good ideas to cut off the car's engine, and if at night to turn on the inside lights. All you have to do is show your license and insurance papers and any other conversation should not be entertained. As long as you don't have the smell of marijuana or some illegal substance in plain eyesight they have no right to search your car. Just say NO in a calm voice. Without a warrant they cannot legally search your car. Do not listen to any flimsy legal comments that they may bring up about Supreme Court rulings on searching your car . . . they are not lawyers and don't have full access to Supreme Court issues themselves. Don't believe them! There are no rulings that allow the police to violate the unreasonable search clause of the 4th Amendment, and if they threaten to get a dog to search your car and you know your rights simply ask , over and over again, 'Am I under arrest? Am I being detained? Tell them to go get a dog if they want for it is probably a ploy to upset you. Even if they say you are being detained for some reason, sometimes they make this up too, they still cannot legally search your car without probable cause and a search warrant. If you have warrants for your arrest then that is a different story, but you should still refuse to talk about anything under the 5th Amendment. Refusing to talk does not mean you are guilty of anything, it simply means that you are protecting your rights like every citizen should do. Do not believe the baloney you see on the TV show COPS. Almost every show is filled with police violations of Constitutional Amendments. Report all abuse, no matter how small immediately to the Internal Affairs Department of SAPD, and keep a record of the abusers name so that the public can be informed. Let the media know about it and the community will need to know the officer's name. Remember, most officers just want to serve and protect, they are the good ones, but we must be watchful of those that have disgraced themselves and SAPD. Know your rights!

Al Sharpton on MSNBC Sunday, talking both about his new East Harlem charter schooland politics that may not be usual. “It’s a whole different strategy, but I think we need to hold our vote because I don’t believe any of [the political candidates],” he said. Though Combs conceded that the president has done “an excellent job,” he said that the getback was not quite on par.

12 WWW.SAOBSERVER.COM - SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 FAKING IT LIKE TRUMP Coard: Trump’s fake Kappa, fake Christian, and fake Black man By: Michael Coard Pastor Mark Burns is the token mouthpiece who has sung and continues to sing the praises of Donald Trump on Al Jazeera- America, BBC, CBS, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, NPR, and everywhere else. And he’s a fraud. But before I expose him, allow me to expose Trump by noting that he’s a fraud, too, for several reasons. But the only reason I’ll deal with today is his real ancestral name from Germany. And it isn’t Trump; it’s actually “Drumpf.” I’ll discuss him and his name in a later column. Or not. Let’s get back to 36 year-old Pastor Burns. He has repeatedly claimed he’s a member of Kappa Alpha Psi, which is a fraternity founded in 1911 and which I became a proud member of while a student at Cheyney University. By the way, many people refer to the Kappas and the other eight fraternities and sororities within the Divine Nine as “Black Greeks.” But we ain’t no damn Greeks. We’re Africans. The fraternal and sororal concept was not created in Greece or anywhere else in Europe. It was created in North Africa, specifically Egypt (i.e., Kemet), two thousand years before the Greeks knew anything about it. And speaking of not knowing anything about it, Pastor Burns, who praised Trump during the benediction at the Republican National Convention while leading an “All Lives Matter” chant, has constantly been telling everyone all across the country and on his bio that he’s a Nupe. Nope, he’s not! Despite that, he actually said “I pledged Kappa at the now disband(ed) xi omega chapter at Furman University but ... never crossed.” However, he never pledged an undergraduate chapter. He never pledged an alumni chapter. He never even received an honorary membership because we don’t grant honorary memberships. And even if we did, he definitely wouldn’t get one. Although he is a real minister at a real church called The Harvest Praise & Worship Center in Easley, South Carolina, he is not a real Christian. Well, let me put it another way. He is not Christlike. The first rule of being a Christian is to always ask “What would Jesus do?” and then do just that instead of doing what Jesus would not do. Jesus would not support a racist. For example, in regard to Trump’s plans to deport and ban poor, hungry Brown immigrants, even the Pope said on February 18, “A person who thinks only about building walls... and not building bridges, is not a Christian. This is not the gospel.” If you look at Pastor Burns, he looks Black. But looks can be deceiving. He’s not really Black. Instead, he’s confused and traitorous. In the famous words of the unparalleled activist attorney Cecil B. Moore, “You might be my color, but you ain’t my kind.” Burns is not our kind because he supports a blatant racist who has often said outrageously bigoted things about and done outrageously discriminatory things to Blacks, Latinos, and Arabs. And don’t forget that Trump is the very same racist who, in 1989, put out a full- page ad calling for the death penalty to be imposed on the five innocent Black and Latino juveniles falsely implicated in the tragic Central Park jogger rape and attempted murder case.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said in-person visits will gradually be phased out by mid-November, when all visits will be done by video, except for rare circumstances. Visitors need to register online or at the facility before their visit. The Sheriff’s Office said the new center and technology will allow people to visit inmates more often. HISTORICAL DEMAND African American museum extends hours to meet ‘unprecedented’ visitor demand By: Peggy McGlone Due to high demand, Smithsonian officials will extend the hours of the National Museum of African American History and Culture, making available some 80,000 additional passes from the Sept. 24 opening through Oct. 2. The museum will use timed passes through December, officials said. The timed passes designate a 15-minute window for visitors to enter the museum. They are being used to control crowds and limit wait times at the museum’s entrance. Once they have entered, visitors may spend as much time as they’d like in the museum. The first free timed passes were snapped up when they became available Aug. 27. All passes to the opening weekend were gone within an hour; by the end of the weekend, the only passes available were some mid-week days in October. Museum founding director Lonnie Bunch said he was humbled by the response from the public. “As a result of this unprecedented interest, we are making more passes available so that as many people as possible can experience the museum in person during this historic moment and for years to come,” Bunch said in a statement.

By: BrunoPassos Player ratings for the next installment in the highly popular NBA 2K franchise Ratings for a number of the league's best were recently leaked, and that's a list that now most definitely includes the Spurs' Kawhi Leonard. OBAMA TAKES A SIDE President Obama defends Colin Kaepernick's 'constitutional right to make a statement' By: The Week President Barack Obama weighed in on NFL player Colin Kaepernick's controversial refusal to stand up during the national anthem, calling the decision the quarterback's "constitutional right." "My understanding is that he is exercising his constitutional right to make a statement, and there is a long history of sports figures doing so. There are a lot of ways you can do it," Obama said. Kaepernick, who is the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback, has refused to stand for the national anthem in protest over the way black people are treated in the United States. His motion has been met with heavy criticism, including by the Santa Clara Police Union, which has threatened to boycott49ers games. But "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," Kaepernick has said. Obama added that he believes in "active citizenry," saying that "sometimes that's messy and controversial and it gets people angry and frustrated." "But I would rather have young people who are engaged in the argument and trying to think through how they can be part of our democratic process, than people who are just sitting on the sidelines and not paying attention at all," Obama said. "My suspicion is that over time, he is going to refine how he's thinking about it. Maybe some of his critics will start seeing that he has a point about certain concerns about justice and equality. That is how we move forward. Sometimes it's messy, but that's the way democracy works." Jeva Lange

WWW.SAOBSERVER.COM - SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 15 ‘ESTATE’ PROFILING Cop Looks So Dumb After Pulling Over Black Real Estate Agent The agent literally had to show the police officer the house he was trying to sell in order for the cop to believe that he was in the neighborhood for a good reason. By: Yesha Callahan FUGITIVES WANTED $$ REWARD FOR INFORMATION $$ Daijhon Sears Assault Family, 2nd Offense 2102222330 or 2108788926 CASH REWARD Chalk up being a real estate agent and doing marketing comparisons in the neighborhood of a house you’re trying to sell to yet another thing black folks can’t do. An unidentified real estate agent’s police-stop video has gone viral after he was pulled over by a Randolph County, N.C., cop. According to the video, the agent was doing price comparisons in the same neighborhood where he’s selling a house because he’s wondering why his offers have been so low. But then he’s pulled over by a cop. You can see the agent explaining to the cop what he’s doing and hear the agent’s passenger on the phone explaining to his mother what’s going on. Obviously the cop did not believe the agent. So the agent played along with the cop. And literally drove to the house that he was trying to sell. And yes, the cop followed him. The agent, while driving to the house, spoke about the prices of homes in the neighborhood, which range up to $300,000.

16 WWW.SAOBSERVER.COM - SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 ‘CUTTING’ ADVICE Bernie Sanders Says Hillary Clinton Should Cut Ties With Clinton Foundation If Elected - “She should cease all operations, all contact, with the Clinton Foundation,” the senator said. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) says Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton ought to cut all ties with the Clinton Foundation if elected in November. “I would certainly suggest that as president of the United States she should cease all operations, all contact, with the Clinton Foundation,” Sanders said in an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that aired Sunday. Sanders, a Democratic primary opponent who has endorsed Clinton, joins a growing chorus of voices urging the former secretary of state to cut ties with the foundation. Last week, The New York Times editorial board said Clinton ought to distance herself from the nonprofit corporation established by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, that focuses on fighting childhood obesity, addressing the effects of global climate change and creating economic growth. The foundation has faced increased scrutiny in recent months following allegations of ethical impropriety surrounding Clinton’s tenure as secretary of state. In June, while still a candidate for president, Sanders criticized Clinton’s ties to the foundation. He told CNN that he was troubled by the fact that “a sitting secretary of state and a foundation run by her husband collects many, many dollars from foreign governments — governments which are dictatorships.” But in his interview on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, Sanders stopped short of saying that Clinton ought to shutter the foundation entirely ? as called upon by her Republican opponent, Donald Trump. “At the very least she should not be involved, at the very least,” the senator said. “They do a lot of good things with AIDS and so forth so I can’t definitively answer that.” Jason Miller, Trump’s senior communications adviser, said in a statement that the criticism from both Sanders and The New York Times editorial board “shows just how badly compromised a Hillary Clinton presidency would be.” “It’s time for Clinton to end her 274-day streak without a press conference and explain why she thinks it is appropriate for the Clinton Foundation and its offshoots to continue accepting foreign contributions while she runs for the White House,” he added.
