K 12 in the Philippines by Mary Ann Nocum U nder the previous Aquino administration the most notable program that has taken effect in the country is the Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education six years of primary education four years of Junior High School and two years of Senior High School SHS program known as the K 12 Program The said program has been running for four years now with the mandated universal kindergarten first implemented in school year 20112012 and the enhanced curriculum for the Junior High School kicking off in school year 2012 2013 The new program seeks to cure what ails the Philippine basic and secondary education system But not everyone agrees that the additional years will result in better educated competitive and employable graduates From teachers students and most especially parents were flabbergasted as it was a drastic change on the country s educational system It required all schools to go upside down and right side up with most of the whole curriculum As the program began with a pang on everyone s ears with the previous 10year education cycle a lot of changes were made and most of which were changes that everyone was new to especially the faster development of the curriculum in high school Change is never easy especially when it is about a big undertaking such as the implementation of the new K 12 curriculum guide in the Philippines But it is high time however that we join the rest of the world and improve the quality of our basic education system and our graduates THE GAP IN SOCIETY by James Ivan M Aquino more quickly and efficiently and has become quite the necessity for some people who wish to perform tasks that would have taken a long time in the past and now takes a single click on the mouse to do so In the 21st century everything is connected either by wired or wireless But how about people Are we still connected even without our eyes on the screen Was Albert Einstein correct with fearing that technology will surpass human interaction Over time technology has changed the ways that allow people to communicate If we compare the years of the 90 s kids and the 21st century babies we can notice that there is a huge difference between the lifestyles of the two generations In the 90 s we got to see kids playing around in the park running in the street and having time of their lives carrying around a playful smile without having any problems in the world While in the 21st century kids spend their time playing with their gadgets with hi tech apps putting too much time on what is in front of their screens and not their surrounding environment Nowadays elementary kids have their gadgets already most commonly iPhones or Android phones Back when I was their age I used to play around with my classmates during our break time In the end it still depends on your own perspective on how you are going to appreciate the changes that the world has for these past few years Do not let technology change you instead of focusing or spending a lot of time using your gadgets why not you look around enjoy the small things while it lasts because you will never know when it might disappear Most importantly set aside everything and engage yourself with the rest of the members of the society Let us bring back the sound harmony among everyone by actually interacting with each other face to face and not in front of our device s screen

A fter 20 years the Philippines has finally made its mark in the history of the Olympics Hidilyn Diaz a province girl from Zamboanga City has made her way in the 2016 Rio Olympics bagging the silver medal in the women 53 kg weightlifting competition With her remarkable strength and gigantic determination Diaz was able to lift 200 kilos 88 in the snatch and 112 in the clean and jerk which lead her to grab the Silver Medal at the Rio Olympics held last She was able to lift 1 66 times her weight and clean and jerk over double her body weight This win has provided her the change to make things she had dreamed before a reality as under the Philippine Incentives Act the silver medal is worth P5 Million In a phone interview with ABS CBN News Dyan Castillejo Diaz Since the start of his administration President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has always been vocal and direct on issues he wishes to correct in the country However not everyone is taking things in the same way he would like them to be taken He has been asked repeatedly about the supposed extrajudicial killings since the start of his administration In effect many believe that his determination to fight the drug menace some of which had supposedly resulted to such extrajudicial killings has apparently become a war of sorts in the country The president is now facing questions from the Commission on Human Rights the United Nations revealed her plans with how she will use the money Bibili ako ng lupa sa side ng bahay namin Tapos po gagawin kong gym weightlifting gym Plano ko po iyon since December pa po Since wala pa po akong pera Iyon ang naging motivation ko para kunin ang medal I will purchase a lot at the side of our house Then make a gym out of it a weightlifting gym I have had that plan since December And since I didn t have money then That was my motivation to grad the medal The goal for Olympics 2020 has been already set by our proud Olympic silver medalist that she is determined to take home the gold for the Philippines Even though through her ups and downs her determination and her faith to herself and the Almighty God pushed her through the Rio Olympics 2016 Kudos Hidilyn Diaz and even from the Filipino people Legitimate issues have been expressed by those who are put in a position of distress by the police operations and the vigilante squads For instance Rappler reported about the story of the death of the 5 year old Danica Garcia who was accidentally shot in their living room by a riding in tandem while her grandfather Maximo Garcia was being targeted by the unknown shooters Unfortunate reports such as this has spawned a great impact on the people as they become seriously concerned about the collateral damages that consequently arise from such massive campaign of the government to eliminate drugs in our midst As stated by the Commission on Human Rights CHR Chair Jose Louise Martin Gacson during the budget briefing in the House of Representatives as covered by PhilStar the CHR Task Force has only been able to look into 20 of the supposed extrajudicial killings He even cited the report from the Philippine National Police PNP Chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa that almost over one thousand cases are still under investigation Our chief executive reacts on this strongly and has admitted that he will take responsibility for those affected in the police operations In line with this the government is also being questioned by the United Nations UN as to how and why such killings had to happen Nevertheless despite the foregoing factual circumstances that President Duterte is facing with the CHR and the UN he remains unyielding on his stand that criminals are still criminal and must be meted out the full force of the law particularly the drug lords drug pushers and drug protectors while the drug users who have surrendered are given the opportunity to be rehabilitated
