SPECIALIZING IN SAFE ALTERNATIVE PAIN MANAGEMENT TREATMENTS Dr. Robert Townsend Denali Healthcare Located within the CRCW... After 18 years in Battle Creek, establishing a well-known brand of craft beer loved by people all over Michigan and surrounding states, Arcadia Ales is pushing the business farther into the main stream with a brand new brewery and restaurant opening this month in Kalamazoo. Tim Surprise started Arcadia Ales in 1996 at the Battle Creek location with a dream and a 1.4 million dollar investment. The brewery and restaurant has seen its ups and downs over the years just like the economy and the ever changing environment that we call Michigan. But Tim has stuck it out through thick and thin and 18 years later can see his hard work pay off with a 7 million dollar facility that will increase his brewery production by 20,000 barrels and has the potential to grow to 80,000 in the future. With popular brews like Anglers Ale, Sky High Rye, Cocoa Loco and of course Whitsun Arcadia there is plenty of demand for this increase in brewing capacity. Brew master Dave Sipple is like a kid in a candy store, anticipating this new facility for almost a year as he was drawn to the project all the way from Victory Brewing outside Philly and is excited to be part of the new Arcadia brewery. Tim has spared no expense at the new location filling it with state of the art brewing equipment including a 50 barrel W.M. Sprinkman system out of Wisconsin, Lambrechts 60 keg filler, Krones fully automated bottle line, a more efficient silo system and automated malt handler. The brew is what Tim has been perfecting for the last few decades but this venture is going to bring something new to the table, literally! In the Kalamazoo location the food is inspired by a 1,700 pound Oyler wood burning BBQ smoker that sits just outside the kitchen where they are going to produce the most delicious smoked meat you can imagine. Everything will be served from an upscale deli style counter that gives you the choice to mix and match as much meat as your heart desires. May 2014 By Robin Cunningham Chef Nathan Gilmour creates seasonally inspired dishes that will take advantage of locally grown produce. Both hearty comfort food and light spring salads to cut through the fats of the meat. Nathan, who is from Seattle but has traveled all over to study the culinary arts. While living in Rome, he became a member of the Rome Sustainable Food Project or RSFP as well as perfecting his craft in France and Germany. Everyone will receive personal service at the deli counter where you pay by weight not by the serving, then you can sit and enjoy your hand picked meal with a beer of your choice brought to the table by your server. The fare will also offer hand crafted, locally made bread from Mackenzies and Sarkozys bakeries for your enjoyment, all you have to do is ask and nothing completes a meal like locally made high end deserts by Kelsey. The Tulikivi stone fire pit will be used for both heating in the winter and to produce a fine pizza which will also be sold by weight like they do in Rome. The inside is open and full of natural light, glass paned garage doors provide a view of the river from anywhere is the building, which allow for an open air bar in the summer. Some of the wood used to build the custom bar and tables, comes from re-claimed materials from the old Corporation Hall in Kalamazoo and the rest is Northern Michigan Fir all beautifully hand made. With an inspiring view of the Kalamazoo River, Tim is planning a band shell outside that will host a variety of live music. There is a scenic trail that goes down to the water where there will be a dock for canoe and kayak parking. And also a bike rack that is sure to be full in the summer time. Because the restaurant and bar will be so open to the outdoors, weather permitting, Arcadia has provided a smoking area on top of the hill so smokers can partake without losing the comfort and feel of the establishment. Although the new Arcadia has taken its time getting here, it was well worth the wait! Like fine beer you can’t rush perfection and this is an epic new addition to the Kalamazoo scene. Working together with the Battle Creek location which Tim assures is not going away. “The people of Battle Creek deserve the original location,” says Tim, “They have been there supporting us since the beginning and I have every intention of staying there”. Arcadia Ales has been doing soft openings for the last month and have planned the grand opening for May 8th. Be sure to mark your calendar and come out to see the latest and greatest Kalamazoo has to offer, and of course drink some great Arcadia brew! 16
