March 2017 Principal s Den Dear Families and Patrons Last week s Read Across America Week was a success and it is a nice segue into the month of March as we move towards promoting early childhood education Kindergarten registration is this Thursday March 9 2017 see flyer below We are looking forward to meeting our up and coming Kinder students In addition we are pleased and super excited for our STEM Family Night This is the first time Lowell has ever been given the chance to host the STEMbusUSA org The Mobile STEM Lab and Assembly is sponsored by the Micron Foundation STEMbusUSA org gives a truly unique and hands on experience so students can dive into science technology engineering and math The STEM Mobile Discovery Lab is equipped with the latest technologies enabling 30 students at a time to learn and explore Students can expect to see drones robots smoke and explosions They will also get to experience high end hands on tools like virtual reality circuitry and much much more This day will be full of fun and learning We encourage families to invite friends and neighbors to this great learning event Please support us by wearing your Lowell Spirit Wear or colors Black and Gold see flyer Lastly our school would like to thank our 4th Graders who were randomly selected to take the NAEP assessment The state testers had this to say about them Your 4th grade students did a superb job they were very respectful and worked very hard to complete the assessment We enjoyed ourselves at Lowell Nice work 4th Grade Your Principal Dr Adria David

Kindergarten Registration March 9 2017 Registration Date Please attend registration with your child on Thursday March 9 2017 from 4 00 5 30 P M Your child will go through several learning stations and receive a packet of home activities that you can do with your child over the summer Paperwork Registration packets are available right now To enroll in kindergarten students must be 5 years of age on or before September 01 2017 A birth certificate proof of residence and a current immunization record are required Please return all paperwork on th March 9 at Kindergarten Registration Although it does not give your child priority it does make the registration process more efficient AM PM Kindergarten Lowell Elementary offers two half day Kindergarten sessions Classroom Hours AM morning 9 15 12 00 PM afternoon 1 00 3 45 We also offer All Day Kindergarten The cost for this program is 250 00 for ten months Please let us know if you have mitigating circumstances that necessitate a morning or afternoon kindergarten session We will do our best to accommodate needs but we cannot guarantee placement Enrollment Priorities If you have a child currently attending Lowell Elementary you will be given first priority for enrolling your kindergartener Please contact the office Overflow The district will provide placement and busing for any students that their home school cannot accommodate Lowell Elementary overflow schools are Whittier Taft and Washington In the event that we have more than 69 students register we will have a lottery to determine which students will attend Lowell Elementary and which students will be overflowed to another school The date of the lottery is yet to be determined Open Enrollment If you currently live in an area other than Lowell Elementary you will need to register at your home school At that time you may fill out an open enrollment form to request placement at Lowell Elementary The Open enrollment forms will not be considered until 4 1 2017 Kindergarten Open House We realize that you may have several questions regarding kindergarten Please know that a few days before school starts Lowell Elementary will have a Kindergarten Open House You will be invited along with your child to visit the classroom meet the teacher and become comfortable with school before the first day arrives This has been very successful in reducing anxiety for both the child and the parent In August you will get a letter telling you the dates and times of our Open House If you have any questions feel free to call us at 208 854 5480 Thank you

Recognizing Lowell s Safety Patrol Members Lowell s Safety Patrol students are selected because they have demonstrated to their teachers that they can be responsible courteous dependable and have shown leadership potential while also having good attendance Being a member of the Lowell Safety Patrol means they have agreed to take on the responsibility of arriving early before school starts and staying late after school ends Patrol members constantly demonstrate good citizenship and are courteous while on duty Meet our February Safety Patrol members Kailee J and EhKugay B what they had to say about serving as well as comments from Mrs Merrick A safety patrol member needs to be dependable and the students who are the Safety Patrol Students for the month of February definitely have this quality Mrs Merrick Kailee is someone who always shows up for her post on time She has been a dedicated patrol member for two years and Lowell is lucky to have her help keeping our school community safe Mrs Merrick I signed up for Safety Patrol at the beginning of fifth grade and I m glad I did I love doing my part for the school by helping insure safety on the road crosswalks Kailee EhKugay is a fifth grader who quickly became one of the most dependable members of Lowell s Safety Patrol She has a quick smile and is polite to everyone as a crossing guard Thank you for your dedication EhKugay Mrs Merrick I wanted to be on Safety Patrol to help others and try something new I m glad I did it EhKugay

Lowell Volunteers Mountain West Bank Mountain West Bank says thanks to Lowell Elementary Third Graders The third grade students at Lowell Elementary were the stars of a recent production of a TV and newspaper ad On February 9th the students were part of filming for the ad for Mountain West Bank The Bank was highlighting one of their employees a volunteer in the classroom for Junior Achievement The employee Conor McGrath was presenting the first session of a multi week program created by Junior Achievement Junior Achievement JA as you may know has been around for many years with the goal of helping students learn about business Conor McGrath is a volunteer who enjoys volunteering in the classroom for JA and Lowell Elementary is one of several grade schools that have participated in this JA opportunity Conor has been a longtime volunteer basketball coach for the Y and is married to a grade school teacher The first session he taught complete with hands on activities was focused on how cities are set up The Boise School District allowed Mountain West Bank to spend the one class period filming how Conor volunteers for his community with JA something the Bank supports for their employees In appreciation for the filming location Mountain West Bank donated to the Boise School District Foundation earmarked for Lowell Elementary s use A videographer and a photographer captured the scene and the students were asked by their teachers Ms Beaudry and Mr McCullough to go about their learning as if the cameras were not there How did they do They were stars By all accounts the third grade students were very engaged with the information and activities were great listeners and seemed to enjoy the special filming session From Andrea Harris Mountain West Bank Branch Manager and JA board member We are so grateful to the Boise School District and to Lowell Elementary for allowing us to tell the story of how classroom volunteers can make a positive impact on the lives of students Junior Achievement is an important program and is available to the students of our community But it takes a committed volunteer to deliver the valuable material to the students Conor knows how to make it fun and interesting for the kids As a community bank we support the volunteer efforts of our employees This ad helps us bring that to light and celebrate it The third grade students at Lowell were excellent participants Here is the link on youtube if you would like to view the TV commercial https www youtube com watch v MMKE8mwYDMg Enjoy some photos below of the work that took place in the classroom on February 9 th
