Behind our theme and thrill lighting philosophy: We believe knowledge lays the foundation for unlimited creativity. We relentlessly research. Why? Because knowing every type of lighting product across every type of industry allows us to creatively apply our knowledge in new and different ways. We challenge ourselves to do what has not been done before, and love to provide our clients with first of its kind solutions. At KCL Engineering, no project is too big to be solved because we have the knowledge to solve it. We believe applying engineering principles yields better results. Engineers aren’t limited by “what is.” Rather, we use our technical expertise to achieve “what needs to be.” For our clients, this means their lighting designs don’t need to be limited to what is already sitting in a warehouse. You give us a brilliant task and we’ll come up with a brilliant solution. We truly believe our technical expertise benefits every phase of a project; from idea creation, technical development, through system installation. If we are partial to anything, it’s to the belief that being impartial leads to the best solutions. There is power in, and we place great importance on, having an open mind. In fact we believe one of the top benefits of working with KCL Engineering is our impartiality. Clients can trust that design solutions are based off of their best interest and not the result of an allegiance to one line of products. Coming up with ingenious solutions is where our allegiance resides.

The Monster Roller Coaster Lighting As if debuting their first new ride in 20 years wasn’t exciting enough, our client selected a lighting system for The Monster that is first of its kind in the entire world. The combination of color-changing ground mounted LED lighting and dynamic color-changing track lighting with unlimited programming abilities provides an intrigue and emotional thrill found on no other roller coaster on the globe. Built by Gerstlauer, The Monster has 2,500 feet of track, a 133 foot vertical lift hill, five inversions, a 101 degree first drop and 10 airtime moments, and it crosses the park’s existing Sky Ride eight times. It boasts the first “negative-G stall loop” in the western hemisphere. KCL Engineering attributes this particular ride’s lighting solution on a combination of our team’s engineering background, ingenuity, and a competitiveness to design what has never been done before.

The Monster Roller Coaster Lighting design process With five inversions and a design intended to surprise riders with every twist and turn, documenting the direction riders would be traveling at every moment was our first order of business. Fixture selection and spacing to produce the intended effect and color output was imperative. Computer modeling and actual track testing prior to installation ensured the lighting design would yield the desired effects. With infinite possibilities, the lighting system is able to illuminate the tracks and structure into any color imaginable, with any movement imaginable through a specialized programming software and a simple DMX controller.
