The Emotional Side of Running a Business …riding out the highs and lows Do you ever feel as though your business is like a roller coaster? Do you feel like when it's good, it's great; and when it's bad, well, it's white-knuckle time? Running a business can be a daunting task. Just as in life, business naturally has an ebb and flow pattern. How you react to this pattern determines how low your next ebb will be and how high your next flow. How do you feel when your business is at a low? Do you start to question yourself? Does panic set in? Do you feel frustrated or discouraged? It is understandable why you might feel that way, but the more you react to your fear, the more power you give it. You are potentially setting your business up for even lower ebbs in the future. In order to stop feeding your fear, it is important to have a strategy in place for just those times. A healthy strategy can help you get through those challenging low points. new business, at some point you can lose momentum and have to rebuild it all back up again. Implementing strategies at this stage, emotionally and practically, is as vital as when business is slow. What can you do during the peak times? Keep networking, keep marketing, and keep growing. If you aren't able to keep up with the demands of your business, then delegate or hire someone. Fire yourself from the tasks that keep you from focusing on what you do best. What can you do during the low times? Is there a new product or service that you have been thinking about adding to your business? Are there new marketing approaches that you have been looking to explore? This would be a great time - because you have time - to research, create and implement something new into your business. When you hit slow times, see it as the universe opening up the space for you to move your business to the next level. It's time to GROW! This truly can be an opportunity where accelerated growth is on the horizon. It may not appear so as your appointment book glares back at you with all its empty space. Brainstorm or implement that idea you have been kicking around but haven't gotten to because you just didn't have the time. This is the time to get SERIOUS about putting these things into action. No more dawdling, it's time to get busy, get out of your comfort zone, and bring your ideas to fruition. Upon the launch of your new creation, you may be surprised to see all the business that starts rolling in. For many years, I knew in my heart of hearts I was to be teaching. In 2012, even though I taught a handful of workshops, I wasn't all in. My business slowed considerably at the beginning of 2013. I knew it was time to step further out of my comfort zone and get serious about teaching, so I created a series of ongoing weekly workshops. As I launched my new program, my business flourished. By the end of 2013, I had my best year to date. As I continue to teach, I continue to reach even higher highs. Embrace the low times, and use those times to get creative. When you aren't growing, in business or in life, the universe has a way of giving you a nudge. You just have to recognize that you are being nudged! How do you feel when your business is at a peak? Do you feel as though nothing can stop you, or are you waiting for the other shoe to drop? Do you have a self-worth issue that pops up to question whether you deserve all your success? Or, do you become complacent? Too often you can ride on the wave and not plan for the eventual ebb ahead. If you slow down your marketing efforts to bring in Page 8 If your worth issues surface, you can begin to sabotage your success by pushing it away, not consciously, but on a subconscious level. If your negative self-talk increases, recognize it for what it is, your own fears creeping in to taunt you. Just as you have a negative inner voice, you also have a positive one, use it. Take to journaling, or talk to a friend or coach as a way to shift your perspective to an empowering one. And that other shoe that you are so worried about, remember this, what you focus on expands, the more you focus on that shoe, the more you bring it into reality. Are You FIT for building a thriving business Written by: Rodney Rich From my experience it is easy to see the correlation between fitness and building a rock star business. Fitness has always been central to my life long before I stepped into the business arena in my youth. I was always fascinated by the ability of the human body to adapt and grow stronger. Isn't that what you really want in your business? You want to be able to adapt to changes, grow stronger and overcome obstacles at a faster pace. For me growing in business has always mirrored my achievements in fitness. The same mindset I used to become the AAU USA Bench Press Champion 2 years back to back and rank in the top 3 in the world, are the same principles that I use to build businesses and stay ahead of the pack. It is all about reaching new levels. 1. Dedication is key. If you're not dedicated to your training your results will be hit and miss. You won't see consistent improvements which often times lead to a mindset that defeats you. The thoughts of "it's just not working so why try" will start creeping in. Before you know it you stop all together. 2. Constant Pressure. People are always looking for the place where they can ease up. Let's think about this, if you don't continually increase your fitness levels your body will actually acclimate to the new "no pressure zone" and you actually start easing away from your peak level. It may not feel like it but constant pressure is the only thing that builds strength. You have to keep reaching for new personal bests. I set goals to add ten or fifteen pounds to my lifts every month. When I didn't do this I stalled out and actually saw decreases in my personal best. Don't look for the place of no pressure, become comfortable being uncomfortable. 3. Getting the right information for the job at hand. So many of my competitors would be using training regimens that had been around in the mainstream for decades. Did they improve? Yes they did but not at the pace I was. What was the difference? I was getting expert advice and constantly doing Infinity Business Magazine | INBLV.COM things that were outside the box. I found the best trainer, got the information and went against the grain. Did I get ridiculed for my unorthodox approach? Yes I did but I also proved it out with my results and success. Business is no different. Get the best information and ignore the naysayers. I always tell people that free information is free for a reason. 4. Always keep your goal in front of you. I didn't train consistently so that my body would hurt or that my joints would ache. I trained because I kept my goal in front of me. I could see myself achieving the next goal. I could see myself with another trophy. I could see myself getting the applause. In business there may not be trophies or applause but there is financial success and freedom. There is the self-satisfaction of doing something that others said was impossible. What are your goals? Are you keeping your eye on the prize? 5. Get help when you need it. It never failed that I would see people in the gym doing exercises incorrectly. Doing things incorrectly in the gym hinders your results and can actually cause severe injuries. When I would see them doing things incorrectly I would politely show them the correct form. I was always amazed at how someone who was new to working out thought they knew more than someone like me. They would say that the way they were performing the exercise was better for them. I never understood why they would ignore advice from a seasoned professional. When I started seeing the same behavior in business it dawned on me. The business people just like the people at the gym were too proud to acknowledge they needed help. Their mind had them convinced that needing help is a sign of weakness. This type of thinking is far from the truth. If you look at very successful business people, they all get the right help so they can succeed. Getting help isn't a sign of weakness; not seeking help is the real sign of weakness. Keeping yourself in shape will always be a huge benefit in growing your business. I have a confession I have a confession to make-I take living in the Sunshine State for granted. I don't even think about the number of days that sun brightens my daily outlook. My reality check came after chatting with friends in the Midwest who were so pumped up that the sun was shining. A sunny day is more than a flash in the pan when it comes to good mental and nutritional health. Lack of sun has been shown to affect mood and can make you sad. This is not simply sad in the traditional sense but SAD as in Seasonal Affective Disorder. Seasonal Affective Disorder is the type of depression that occurs during the same season each year, most often during the winter months in areas where there is less sunlight. Depression may be caused by many things. Research has shown that light can affect depression and may be linked to the body's biological clock. Experts also think that lack of light can interfere with serotonin, the brain chemical that affects mood. Michelle J. Stewart MPH, RDLD/N, CDE is an experienced food and nutrition communication expert specializing in wellness with a holistic approach to living your best life. Symptoms of SAD include trouble concentrating, feeling irritable and anxious, loss of interest in activities, carbohydrate cravings, weight gain, sleeping more and feeling tired. People affected by SAD are often treated with light therapy by exposure to bright light early in the day which seems to help set the body's biological clock. Sunlight will also affect Vitamin D levels. Your body can make Vitamin D, alias the sunshine vitamin, with exposure to sunlight. However some people don't make enough vitamin D from the sun. People who have a darker skin tone, are overweight, older, and those who cover up when they are in the sun can be challenged with vitamin D intake. This vitamin plays an essential role in health by helping the body absorb calcium and phosphorous, which forms and maintains strong bones. It works with calcium to improve bone health and decrease the chance of fractures. Vitamin D may also protect against osteoporosis, high blood pressure, cancer, and other diseases. In addition to exposure to sunlight, you can get the vitamin from foods you eat and supplements. Typically you may not get enough vitamin D from the foods you eat. Good sources include dairy products, breakfast cereals (both of which are fortified with vitamin D), and fatty fish such as salmon, swordfish, mackerel, oysters, catfish, trout, tuna and eel. Vegetable sources of vitamin D include mushrooms that have been grown in the sun. Some branded mushrooms are grown in the sun and contain significantly higher levels of vitamin D. You can also place store bought mushrooms in the sun or under ultraviolet (UV) light once you bring them home to boost their Vitamin D content. Research has shown that you can increase the vitamin content of several varieties i.e., white button, shitake, portabella and more with light exposure. I can't bottle the sunshine and send it around the country, but in spotlighting the importance of vitamin D, I hope I've given you some insight on tactics to increase vitamin D intake ensuring a positive outlook and good nutrition throughout the year. FIRST Written by: Dave Borden The old adage "you don't get a second chance at a first impression" is absolutely true! It begs the question - what kind of impression do YOU make? WHAT GOES INTO A FIRST IMPRESSION? This can be a very deep subject with various factors including your appearance, body language and the initial conversation. But for this discussion, we will stick with appearance and body language during the first few seconds, or First Stage Impressions, as they relate to people in business situations in a live setting. The goal of a first impression is to let someone know who you are - the REAL YOU! make a first impression. But in reality, it could happen in less than a couple of seconds, barely a glimpse! We all have an instinctive social safety mechanism that comes into play. Some might called it a gut feeling, or just plain "vibes." As we grow and gather new experiences, we begin to develop the sense of evaluating facial expression, body language, and traits that cause us to quickly form an initial judgment based on emotional response. Negative responses come quicker than positive ones and occur within a split second. What you say later in the encounter may not even matter after this initial judgment. You are sized up even before a first word is spoken. The big question is, what are they thinking? How do we actually define "The First Impression"? According to Wikipedia, "…a first impression is the event when one person first encounters another person and forms a mental image of that person. …First impressions are based on a wide range of characteristics: age, race, culture, language, gender, physical appearance, accent, posture, voice, number of people present, and time allowed to process. The first impressions individuals give to others could greatly influence how they are treated and viewed in many contexts of everyday life.” Let's first look at appearance: Do you possess attractiveness? Webster's definition of attractive is: HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? It used to be said that you had between 10 and 30 seconds to The first question you should ask yourself is - "Am I comfortable with my appearance"? will appear confident, even healthy. It is important to judge what will be appropriate for the event or venue. You would not want to wear a tuxedo to a hoedown, or jeans to a formal event. Your appearance can include your clothes, hair, makeup, body size, body shape, facial symmetry, and many more attributes. Some of these we can control, others we can't. And you never know when or where you might be when given the opportunity to make a first impression. You will have a big advantage when you are planning to attend an event. BODY LANGUAGE - NOT JUST YOURS Body language is extremely important. Are you open or closed, rigid or relaxed, positive or negative, inviting or excluding? Are you smiling? Do you give eye contact? Arms crossed, legs crossed, toes pointing in or out? Standing straight or slouching? Are you nervous or fidgety? What is your current demeanor? What are you thinking Infinity Business Magazine | INBLV.COM about right now? How do you feel about yourself? This will be projected through body language. Wow - there is a whole lot more that goes into body language. And it all means something to someone! We are mostly unaware of some of these traits, and whether they go noticed by everyone else. On the other hand, have you noticed the body language of the person you are trying to make a first impression with? It's a good idea to extend your study on body language since it will help you to know how YOU will be perceived. Do you approach others, or wait to be approached? If you have friends at an event, have them break the ice with introductions with people they know. WANT TO IMPROVE? We should all strive to constantly improve our own first impressions. But where to start? First, take stock of where you are right now. Take a sheet of paper and a pen. On the left side, list things that are going right for you. On the right side, list things that you feel need improvement. Not sure? Ask a friend or colleague to be honest and help you with this evaluation. Then go to work! Like anything else, practice makes perfect. Watch others at events and take mental notes. You might even go as far as filming yourself or taking a picture. You will always look different than looking in a mirror. Mirrors lie - I promise! WRAPPING UP First Impressions can be a very complicated topic, but probably one that could definitely benefit you with a little research. They can help you get what you want - so, what do you want? A lot of time as motivated business owners or career professionals, you get so busy in life, that you think you may be living your full potential, however it maybe more like being so busy, then being the best leader inside of you. Ÿ The reason I ask you to take a minute to ask yourself those questions is because most busy people are completely out of balance and yet their story is, well this is my life. I am here to say, no it is your life because that is what you choose right now. You can change it any time, once you realize that there could be so much more and you are capable of having it. When I was a County Commissioner I was working 80 to 85 hours a week between all the responsibilities of my business and being on many boards. I completely lost who I was. My reality at the time was people on counting on me, I enjoy what I am doing, I love a challenge, and I was making a difference. So, I thought that was living my full potential, however I was completely gassing out, out of balance and not living my full potential. Having time for me, my husband, my boys, fun, family, and relationships were the last thing on my mind, because I was so busy taking care of everything else. At the time I thought I was completely happy, because I did what lit me up. Now, grant it I made time throughout the month for one-fun day, one-date, one-family event. However, I was putting the county first, my business second, my community involvement third, my boys fourth, my husband fifth, my friends sixth, and there was no time for me or spirituality. I felt like I was doing the right thing at the time and was accomplishing a lot, but I was completely out of balance. My ego was keeping me comfortable and my fears where keeping me safe. What I mean by that is it was easier to throw myself into work, then to get uncomfortable and do something I had fear around. Have you ever experienced this? No, I don't want to do that because I have plans, or I have to work? When, really I wanted to experience it, yet I was afraid and I did not want to admit it to anyone. I was so scared of what if I failed, what if I didn't do it right, what if I looked stupid, what if I got hurt, that I did not live most of my life. Fueling your GOOD HEALTH Written by: Dr. Rhonda Henry So, let me start off this article with asking you a question? What did you have for breakfast this morning? I know most of you are sort of laughing, because few take the time to fuel their bodies before leaving for what could turn out to be another hectic day. A typical business/professional person's eating pattern goes something like this: Breakfast: Coffee - maybe a sweet roll, or some toast with jam Your hoping when you get to the office someone has made coffee, but just in case, maybe it's a good idea to stop at the local coffee shop. And your thinking, whose turn is it to bring some goodies? More coffee. Snack: Usually something sweet and/or more coffee. Lunch: If it's a business lunch perhaps a cocktail or two - a processed meal - and coffee. At around 3-4 o'clock you wish you could go to sleep your energy is low and often your disposition is not what it should be. Snack: Chocolate bar - soda (just to keep you going.) Dinner: If it's a business dinner - perhaps a couple of cocktails, another processed meal. Are you checking out the desserts? (which by the way spelled backwards is "stressed".) If it's at home - have you prepared your meals for the week so that you don't have to cook nightly? Probably not! Or you're too tired to cook so you stop off at your favorite fast food restaurant and finally can get home, get comfortable and eat more processed food. Evening Snack: How about some chocolate ice cream, or..... It's been a real challenge trying to get my patients to eat breakfast, in some cases you would think I'm asking Infinity Business Magazine | INBLV.COM them to take poison. You can't believe the excuses I've been given. But once they understand why they've been feeling so bad, not as productive as they used to be, or not losing weight and often putting more on - most of the time they'll make the effort, I think in desperation however, by the next time I see them, changes are occurring. The body heals itself - I just direct traffic and the patient is the producer! Breakfast is, and always has been the most important meal of the day, let me tell you why! The first thing to realize is that if you're eating mainly processed (junk) food most days and snacking on the wrong things before bed - your sleep is affected and your digestive system has to work really hard to try to break down what it was Plan for Tomorrow's Good Health TODAY! TM never designed to break down.. If you consume sugars before bed you will probably be up within 3-hours (that's because you're blood-sugar is low. When you finally arise - you may have been in bed for 68 hours. All this time your body has been on a fast. And now it's imperative to put fuel back in. A protein breakfast is a really good step, perhaps a healthy protein drink. Protein is the building block of your cells. You don't need to be stimulated with sugars, you need to feed your cells and hopefully you're on a good balanced supplement program. Start thinking about your diet as your "Health Insurance" program - many today are dealing with pain, illness, and various diseases that supports your doctors, labs, drug and insurance companies - and they only pay what they think you're worth. Mike has always had a desire to help others live a healthy lifestyle. However, at some point in pursuing a career he landed a job working as a municipal tax assessor. While it was financially rewarding, it was not his passion for what he wanted to do the rest of his life. In 2005, Mike and his then fiancé Brandy, left their successful jobs for what they thought was the ultimate opportunity to follow their dreams. Still looking to supplement his income Mike decided to become an MMA fighter all in a pursuit to follow his dream of helping others to lose weight, get in shape and live a healthy lifestyle. Mike was leaving a six-figure job for the opportunity to accept a position as a fitness coach with #1 team in the emerging sport of mixed martial arts, Team Quest in Oregon. This position meant more hours and making significantly less money, but the opportunity to follow his dream, they believed, would more than make up for the loss in income. He has a weekly podcast, and recently opened a facility that caters to the average person who has a desire to obtain a healthy lifestyle. But of course this dream had its downfall. Having already sold everything they own and packed up their belongings and on the road to Oregon, the dreaded call comes in… Mike's world is rocked by the news that the training position he thought he was going to was no longer available. Instead, he was offered a janitorial position at the gym making $8.00 an hour. While most people would panic and perhaps even call their previous employer and plead for their job back, Mike did not. Mike forged on to Oregon to begin his new career. Mike is known in the MMA industry as the Guru who can help any fighter take it to the next level. But his other passion is to show others how they can do it, too. Q: What made you decide to go from being an MMA fighter to being a trainer instead? Ÿ 2-time Trainer Of the Year winner (2013 & 2014) Ÿ Inducted into the New Jersey Martial Arts Hall Of Fame in 2014. Actually, I was already a professional trainer who began fighting as a means to better understand the physical and mental demands my athletes were going through. Also, it was a way to supplement my income. Fortunately, I was able to carve out a little career for myself as a professional athlete, but my passion has always been as a coach and trainer. Ÿ Named one of Men's Fitness Magazine's Top 30 Most Influencial People alongside Elon Musk, Jimmy Fallon and Colin Kaepernick. Q: You have experienced much success with The Dolce Diet books, your podcast, and now the UFC Fit program. How difficult was it to transition from fighting and training to running a media empire while still training MMA fighters? The transition was quite easy. I had always been an entrepreneur, opening my first training business in 1993 at 17 years old. I have earned an income as a professional trainer ever since. True, I have worn many other hats in that time, notably as a Municipal Tax Assessor in the State of New Jersey, a Real Estate Appraiser, bouncer, first-mate on a tuna boat, newspaper boy, silk screen printer, and much more, to always make ends meet and stay cashflow positive. But, my passion has always been as a trainer and health advocate. Next, we will continue to expand our book series with a muscle building book, which is a turn away from our other books that focus on weight loss. But truly, I'm most excited about our pregnancy book, which focuses on the 3 months pre-conception, 9 months of pregnancy, and the 3 months after baby is born and As I began working with elite athletes, driven by my results and reputation, my Résumé began to grow. This issue of Infinity Business Magazine is featuring articles on health and business. So, I started my research on google to write my article on health and the workplace. I found the usual generic tips about proper use of sanitizer, when to change your air filters, don't go to work sick, blah, blah, blah… I know that stuff is important and I hope you're doing all the standard things to stay healthy but the more thought I put into my article, the more I realized what is really hurting our health at work is STRESS… Am I Right? V At my workplace, like every other place, it has stress, chaos, and personal issues. It is harder than ever nowadays to relax in a world facility to take care of him. As I listen intently, she tells me that he has Parkinsons, one failing kidney left and cancer. She has been taking care of him for years but his health has gotten steadily worse. She goes on to explain that she tried to get a nurse but it's too expensive and the VA will only pay a little bit. I am stunned while listening to the rest of her story. She further explains that if she uses someone else that is cheaper, just to help him while she is at work, then the VA won't help because they don't have the proper credential. When she tries to take him to an adult day care, they are so far from her home that she can't make it to work on time. She isn't even complaining she is simply explaining to me that she has exhausted every possibility that she can think of all the while she is still smiling and still working. Then, to add insult to injury, it sometimes includes an indignant attitude about our lack of desire to pick up at all hours. Everyone wants more for less and I have experienced that "weight" that brings you down when things are not going well. I, like many of you, can feel the stress as real as a 117 degree day. But on this particular day as I walk into the office of one of my clients, I ask the receptionist, whom has been so kind to me over the years, "how are you"? She replies that she isn't doing well but is still smiling heartily and completing her dispatch tasks. She then continues to tell me that her husband of 23 years has asked her to call a hospice care STRESS to answer the phone with a glorious intonation of great customer service. The stress of my life quickly leaves me as I recognize I really don't have any problems. Here she is working everyday, taking care of herself, her household, her husband and her job. My mind suddenly changes to thoughts of who washes her car? Mows her yard? Who takes care of her as she lives her life for another? And yet here she is working away serving others, no complaints just smiles… every single time I go there. As I leave I started thinking, instead of recommending to my employer that he finds way to lower our stress, maybe I need to take a real close look at myself and appreciate my life for the better. HOW That's a great question, but let me take a few steps back. I didn't always think that massage could really help your business. It actually wasn't until July 13th 2014 that I experienced it myself. Being a small business owner, I know all about the challenges of owning your own business such as long hours, employee retention, finding good people, retaining customers, keeping your staff motivated and productive, making sales, keeping yourself motivated, high stress levels, never being able to shut it off, and the responsibility you have to your team and helping them provide for their families. It's a lot for one person to take on and I remember sitting down with my wife after a stressful day and telling her "the person who owns their own business has got to be special kind of crazy. Normal people just would not be able to handle this". Who would? You would! Because you care about what you do and believe that you are making a difference and can do it better than anyone else regardless of the odds of success. My wife got pregnant and in January 2014 I decided to quit my day job and do my own thing full time. We agreed we wanted her to stay home when the baby was born which means I had six months to grow this business before that happened. I hired two massage therapists in February 2014, and was always stressing out about whether they were busy enough. I felt like I had to stay going 200 miles an hour and get them as much business as possible, on top of maintaining my own massage clients. I woke up early to do work on the computer, went to work to do massages and stayed up late tying up any loose ends from day. Let's just say it was a long first half of the year. I was focused on growing the business only. As a result I stopped taking care of myself, because "I didn't have time" and everyone that was close to me suffered. can massage help your business? Step 1: Decide on your first step There is not enough time in the day to work on everything that you want all at once; you will need to prioritize. What changes can you make immediately? And what action steps can you take now towards the visions that will take longer to achieve? The next step is to determine what's first. For the things you want to pursue now, decide on what you will do and when, e.g., I will clear the clutter from the spare bedroom this weekend, join a gym by Friday and buy a travel guide to Italy by the end of the month. My Goals... Step 2: Put it in writing Write down your vision and the goals that will support you to accomplish that vision. Carry them with you for constant review and inspiration. Post your goals everywhere so you are always reminded of them. Put them on your bathroom mirror, the steering wheel of your car, your daily scheduler, the refrigerator, your bedside table, etc. Be creative and have fun with this. Phrase goals in the present: Phrase all goals in the present tense, as if you have already achieved them. "I have an office that is free of clutter in June" as opposed to "I will have an office free of clutter by June". Avoid negative words and images: Say "I am fit, healthy and energized," instead of saying "I will not be fat and tired anymore!" Instead of "I am not in debt," say "I have an abundance of money to pay all my expenses." Be specific: Visualize and speak your goals in clear terms. Step 3: Take Action Often the first action step is the hardest one. This is when fear, doubt and worry can take over. But no matter what, just get started. Do not wait for the "perfect" time as there is no perfect time. Make your first steps small so that you can get into the habit of action and get some successes under your belt. Once you have begun this exciting journey toward your goals, don't let anything impede your progress or have you quit. Remain committed to the process. Action is habitual, so continuing to press forward will help you maintain your momentum. Plan for some places along the path to check in and see how you are doing. Be aware of your progress and note whether you need to increase your efforts or make adjustments along the way to stay on schedule. Expect obstacles. These temporary setbacks can be overcome with dedicated commitment. But without preparation, unexpected roadblocks can bog you down or lead you to quit. Actually, there is a great learning experience in the obstacles if we look for it. During this process check in with important sources like family, friends or a coach to help you stay the course. Her like-ability was the only reason she was never picked dead last for a game of kickball. Today, she's a symbol of fitness and the director of the Las Vegas Health and Fitness Chamber of Commerce. She's an entrepreneur who's found success through her independent nature and passion for helping others. my fitness plan reflected those preferences. Financial projections: What are the costs involved? What will the profit be? I am not just referring to gym membership costs. Time invested, social and personal impacts that happen when you change who you are can cost relationships and self-value assessments. Her name is Nicole Sharp. She is me, and this is my story. At age 19, I realized I could take a talent or passion and apply a good, consistent work ethic to a solid business plan. If done well, unlimited earning potential would result, along with more quality of life than clocking in on someone else's dream for 40 hours a week . Nearing 40, with three kids and three successful businesses under my ever-expanding belt, I found myself at my highest weight and my highest success in business simultaneously. I was professionally fulfilled, but personally I carried the weight of generations on me. I had believed that my family's predisposition to obesity was my legacy. I believed I could fight the battle but never win the war. For decades, I lived in a state of gratitude for my many assets and abilities, but optimum health was not one of them. It's no secret that the most successful people in business are consistent in all avenues of life. So the busy, fat chef of a successful corporate catering company developed a business plan for getting healthy. Innovation assessment: My innovative idea was not to lose weight again; it was to stop having to lose weight. I needed to find a sustainable lifestyle that worked with my strengths, and a healthier body would result. Market research: What were the lifestyle differences in the truly successfully fit? DNA wasn't the main factor. WOMP (what's on my plate) and HMDIMT (how much did I move today) mattered. Management team: Even when you are a sole proprietor, those with whom you work and associate can make a huge difference in your success. Do you need a trainer or a nutritionist?
