e h T re e Fo -On e n O September 15, 2016 Issue 12 Volume 1 Southern Alberta’s Golf News Mike Graham studies his line during the Southern Alberta Amateur, Sept 5 at Henderson Lake Golf Club. Courses preparing for season’s end As the 2016 golf season heads into the fall, some new challenges arise for area courses. Unpredictable weather and staff shortages head the list for local superintendents to deal with as they balance squeezing the last days of the season with preparing for the inevitable snowfall. Most courses employ several students during the summer months. With school back in session, it leads to a shortage of people to keep the courses in tip top shape. Picture Butte Golf Club Superintendent Clint Collier has seen his staff reduced from 20 full time employees at the height of the season to just seven. “We try to do as much as we can with what we have,” says Collier. “You definitely have to reprioritize what you are doing.” Darin Nemecek, Superintendent at Magrath Golf Club, agrees. He’s seen his full time staff dwindle to four from 10. Most courses focus on keeping greens in top shape, while whittling down the to-do list. “We try to focus on mowing the greens and high traffic areas,” says Nemecek. “You try to do things like the rough as needed.” One positive about this time of year is that grass does not grow as quickly, and the number of players clubs see starts to slow down as well. “The days are shorter so there’s not a whole lot of growth going on,” said Collier. “Our rounds start to go down so we’re able to make do with the staff we have.” Of course, a trade off includes lower temperatures, leading to frost, which local courses experienced last week. The loss of time on those days can also throw a wrench into a day. “Frost can really start setting things back before you can get out and get things done,” says Nemecek. “You end up trying to get an eight-hour work day into five and a half or six hours,” agreed Collier. Even as courses prepare for winter, they still try to keep their products in top condition. With part-time staff available, weekends become very valuable for clubs. “On weekends we’re able to cut greens, change holes and get caught up,” said Nemecek. “People understand it’s September, so they’re happy as long as they have a good putting surface.” Even still, the season could get a setback at anytime. All Southern Albertans know that the weather can turn on a dime at any moment. “Our business is at the mercy of Mother Nature,” said Collier. “The best made plans can always change.”
