Many diverse businesses and
individuals contribute to the
success of the Bradenton Blues
Festival Weekend. This book
celebrates the 5th year of the
Bradenton Blues and pays tribute
to the five Realize Bradenton
sta, 12 board members, 175 volunteers, 25 vendors,
60 event sponsors, the City of Bradenton, as well of
thousands of blues music lovers and supporters of
Realize Bradenton.
As an exceptional destination event in downtown
Bradenton, the annual festival started as the kick-o
for the opening of the award-winning Riverwalk in
2012 and since has attracted over 50 talented blues
bands and over 20,000 people from 41 U.S. states and
20 foreign countries, with approximately 30 percent
attending from Manatee County.
The Bradenton Blues Festival is produced by
Realize Bradenton, a nonprofit organization that
brings people together to create a vibrant and
prosperous downtown area for residents, visitors,
and businesses. Proceeds from the Bradenton Blues
Festival support Realize Bradenton’s youth, art, and
music programs that are free to the community,
including our Blues in the Schools program.
The festival grew out of Realize Bradenton’s
mission to bring people together through arts and
music. No matter your favorite style of music, you
will find elements of the blues in most contemporary
American music. The Bradenton Blues Festival
welcomes many types of artists and blues genres
to demonstrate the range of depth of this unique
American art form.
The Bradenton Blues Festival Weekend starts
on the first Friday in December with a free Blues
Appetizer Concert, sponsored by Mojoe Productions,
Inc., and the Déjà Blues in the Blues Lounge is
a fundraiser for the Women’s Resource Center.
Saturdays main festival oers an outstanding
line-up of talented blues musicians on the big stage
at the Riverwalk. In addition to a diverse line-up,
the award-winning festival features delicious food
vendors, local craft beer, merchandise vendors,
and more. The festivities continue with blues after-
parties Saturday evening. The weekend wraps up
with a tasty Blues Brunch on Sunday.

“A lot of teenagers don’t listen to the blues because we got all
the hip-hop and rock, and it’s not as high energy as that, Mc-
Coy said, “but (the blues) lets people know even if they’re going
through a rough time, they can get through it.
BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS INSPIRES AND
EDUCATES. Proceeds from the Bradenton Blues
Festival help fund Realize Bradenton’s art and
music programs for youth, all year long. Realize
Bradenton works with many partners to inspire the
next generation of musicians and live-music fans
in schools, libraries, at Pickin’ Picnic, as well as the
downtown Farmers’ Market. The week before the
festival, a Blues in the Library series is sponsored
by the Manatee County Public Library System and
Suncoast Blues Society. On the Friday morning of the
festival, Realize Bradenton hosts Blues in the Schools
for 400 Manatee High School music students,
with support from the R. M. Beall, Sr. Charitable
Foundation. During Blues in the Schools program,
professional musicians perform for students and
discuss America’s blues history, traditions, and
the cultural history behind the personal stories
of musicians. Students’ appreciation for one of
America’s original music forms is sparked. The
power of Blues in the Schools is demonstrated by
student comments in a Dec. 2, 2016 Bradenton
Herald article by Ryan McKinnon, “Fiddler brings
the Blues to Manatee High.” Gabrielle McCoy, 17,
said she liked listening to the blues because of the
message behind many of the songs.
