Lowell School founded in 1913 – Principal Nick Smith December 2015 / January 2016 Principal’s Den Dear Lowell Community, Happy Holidays! It is hard to believe that the month of December is already here! With only three weeks between the Thanksgiving and Winter Holiday Vacations, we have put together one newsletter for the months of December and January. Over the past week, Boise has seen temperatures that have been in the 20’s for a high. This colder weather serves as a great reminder that students should no longer be wearing shorts and should come to school with coats, hats and gloves in preparation for the colder temperatures. As a staff, we will use our best judgment to decide whether to allow our students outdoors for activities and recess when the temperatures dictate such a decision. Historically the District has used 20°F as a baseline for making this determination but we will take into account the age of students and the wind chill factor in reaching our decision. Please remember to not drop students off at school in the morning prior to 8:45 AM so that they do not have to spend as much time outside in the cold weather prior to school starting. In staying on the topic of weather, by this time last year, we had already had a school closure due to winter weather. With several months of winter ahead of us, it is possible that we could have a school closure at any time. To keep updated on school closures and other district emergency situations, you may consider signing up for the Boise School District Emergency Text Messaging Service if you have not already done so. You can sign up for the service by texting SUBSCRIBE to the number 68453. You will know you were successful if you receive the following reply message: You're registered 4 School Messenger notifications. Reply STOP to cancel, HELP for help. M sg&data rates may apply. Freq varies. schoolmessenger.com/tm You will want to repeat the opt-in process for any wireless numbers that you wish to include. As we close in on the New Year and the end of the First Semester, I want to thank you for your continued support in making your child’s school experience a positive one. It takes a team to educate a child and we could not do it without the support of our Lowell parents and families. I wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday season. Your Principal, Nick Smith

PAGE 3 D E C E MB E R 2 0 1 5 / J A NU A R Y 2 0 1 6 Update From the Lowell Leadership Team The Lowell Leadership Team has been meeting each month with the mission of finalizing our School Improvement Plan. School Improvement Plans are required for all schools within the Boise School District and are designed to guide our professional development to improve our instructional practices and increase student growth and achievement. The Leadership Team recently finalized our SMART Goals for the 20142015 School Year which are listed below: SMART Goal #1: By the end of the 2015-2016 School Year, all K through 6 grade students at Lowell Elementary will be proficient or increase their fluency rate by 10% as measured by the Idaho Reading Indicator or Reading CBM between fall and spring assessments. SMART Goal #2: By the end of the 2015-2016 School Year, all 2nd through 6th grade students at Lowell Elementary will make typical growth as defined by the STAR Reading and Math assessments based on Student Growth Percentiles. SMART Goal #3: By the end of the 2015-2016 School Year, the number of students who scored between the 60 and 100 range in the area of Interpreting Context as identified by the Primary Math Assessment will increase by 10% at each grade level K through 2. PE Update From Ms. Holt As we move into the Winter season, please make sure that your children are wearing appropriate shoes on the days that they have PE. While boots are great for the winter weather, they are not typically appropriate for PE. Unfortunately, we have experienced many ankle and foot injuries in PE due to incorrect footwear. If your son or daughter is wearing boots to school, please send them with an extra pair of tennis shoes for PE. If they do not have the proper shoes, they will not be able to participate in PE for safety purposes which may impact their grade. The PE schedule is listed below: Mon/Tues- Hammon. Mon/Thurs- Ambrose. Mon/Fri- Sheehan, Bravo, Carson, Beaudry, Mortensen, Colwell, Kyzer. Tues/Thurs- Gillette, Louis, McCullough. Tues/Fri: Calvert. Wednesdays- Auston. Thursdays- Lewis. Please also notify Ms. Holt if your child has an injury that will impact their participation in PE. You can send a note with your child or contact Ms. Holt by email (ashley.holt@boiseschools.org) or voicemail (208-8545513).
