Background
TampaPreparatorySchoolwasfoundedin1974bya
groupofTampacitizens,leadersdedicatedtothe
ideaofanindependent,nonsectariansecondary
schoolrigorousinitscollegepreparatorycurriculum
andcommittedtotheartsandathletics.Fromthe
earliestdaysoftheSchool’sexistence,academic
excellenceanddiversityinthestudentbodywerea
hallmark.TheSchool’sleadersmadefinancial
assistancearealityforqualified,motivatedstudentsin
need.“Ahigherpurposethanself”wasadoptedas
theSchool’smotto.
HousedontheUniversityofTampa(UT)
campusuntil2002,atitsinceptiontheSchool
waslocatedintherenovatedFloridaStateFair
exhibitionbuildingsadjacenttotheUniversity’s
stadium.In1986,theschoolmovedtoa
differentlocationoncampusjustafew
hundredfeetnorthofitsoriginalbuildings.On
theHillsboroughRiveratthenorthperimeter
oftheUTcampus,thenewbuildingincludeda
gymnasiumandexpandedacademicfacilities.
Toembracealargersegmentofthe
community,in1991theschooladdedseventh
andeighthgradestoitsprogram.In1995the
Schoolpurchased11.5acresonCassStreet,
andoutfittedthelandforsportsfieldsanda
twostoryfieldhouse.In1997sixthgradewas
added.Demandfromthecommunityfueled
growthinthesizeofthestudentbodyandthe
campusfilledtocapacity.
Today,the150,000squarefootschool
complex,includinga32,000squarefoot
sportscomplex,affordsTampa
PreparatorySchoolstudentsan
unparalleledlearningandtraining
environmentandunsurpassedamenities.
TheSchool’sproximitytothemany
culturalassetsoftheCityofTampa
affordsaccessforbothstudentsand
teachers,includingtheStrazCenterfor
PerformingArts,PatelConservatory,
TampaBayHistoryCenter,Tampa
MuseumofArt,GlazerChildren’sMuseum
andthehistoricTampaTheater.Tampa
Prep’scommunitypartnershipsflourishas
studentsvolunteercountlesshoursto
communityserviceorganizationsin
TampaBay.
