4 Windy City Sports Speedskater heading to major competition Crosstown rivals clashed as the LCI Rams took on the Winston Churchill Bulldogs Feb 25 Two speed skaters from the Lethbridge Speed Skating Association took part in Winterfest this past weekend the final leg of the three part Short Track Western Elite Circuit WEC The four day event included men s and women s races at the 500m 1000m and 1500m distances in two categories U17 and Open In the men s Winterfest competition our skaters placed as follows amongst 59 participants Mason Muller 29th Aaron Cooney 38th Both Cooney and Muller are members of the Alberta Junior Development team in short track The WEC has the primary goal of providing quality racing opportunities for the developing Junior and Neo Senior athletes The circuit s previous two events were held in two venues WEC 1 Oktoberfest which took place at the Calgary Oval in October and WEC 2 which was held at the Richmond Oval in December Cooney has also qualified to attend a major Canadian short track speed skating event in Trois Rivi res QC later this month The Canadian Junior Open Selections meet brings about 115 of Canada s best young skaters to Quebec At this event junior speed skaters will aim to improve their national ranking Cooney is one of 60 male skaters attending the event March 16th 19th at the Alphonse Desjardins Sports Complex in Trois Rivi res Aaron qualified with times skated during Oktoberfest the first leg of the Short Track Western Elite Circuit WEC in Calgary Horns throwers dominate University of Lethbridge track athlete Peter Millman was named Canada West Men s Field Athlete of the Year and also took home the community service award A fifth year veteran Millman took home the awards after the track and field championships in Regina after taking home gold in the weight throw event He was followed by teammates Sean Steacy who took home silver and Ben Ingvaldson with bronze for the Pronghorn sweep Millan added to the total with a gold in shot put with Ingvaldson winning silver Lara Roth claimed a bronze in shot put and silver in the weight throw to add to the U of L domination of the event Jumper Aaron Hernandez won his fourth consecutive conference title with a gold in triple jump He was also seventh in long jump Braydon Posyluzny rounded out the Pronghorn medals with a silver medal in the heptathlon The Horns finished the event in fifth place in the men s standing while the women s side finished in eighth Progressive Fighting Academy Mixed Martial Arts 1007 3 Ave N Muay Thai Kick Boxing 403 327 3744
