2 Windy City Sports Jerome relishes world title shot Brayden Peters of the Bantam Val Matteoti Golden Hawks makes a save against the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers March 22 at Nicholas Sheran Arena The Hawks dropped a tight 2 1 decision in a winner take all game for the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League title After winning the Fightforce Lightweight Muay Thai title in Great Falls in February Lethbridge s Cody Jerome now has his sights set on a world title Jerome will go Hollywood when he heads to Burbank California to take on Spencer Mix for the WCK Muay Thai World Amateur Title at Cali 20 Beast Mode April 29 Jerome will look to continue his winning ways after stopping Tyson Green during King of Cage in Cold Lake March 3 His recent success has him looking forward to his title shot When we fought in Cold Lake we weren t sure it was going to happen so I was pumped to have the opportunity Jerome said Coming off the two wins I have a lot of confidence going into the fight Jerome doesn t have a lot of info on his opponent but has spent a lot of time watching fight videos of Mix to help create a game plan I don t know a lot about him but he seems like a solid guy said Jerome I don t think there will be anything I can t handle Jerome understandably doesn t give away any secrets but feels that speed will be a key to his success against Mix I think handspeed and pressure will be big he said Having a gameplan going in is huge It can be the difference between winning or losing Jerome has leaned on the experience of his Progressive Fighting Academy trainer Brad Wall for his fights none more important than this one The support and help he gives me is huge said Jerome I wouldn t want to have anyone else in my corner Going into the biggest fight of his young career Jerome has had the full gamut of emotions including nervousness excitement and anticipation It s been a combination of everything but the closer the fight gets the excitement takes over he said It s definitely the biggest fight I ve ever had I really plan on feeding off the energy of the crowd Jerome hasn t decided when he plans on heading to the pro ranks but admits this fight will be a great opportunity to impress fight organizations in Canada and the U S It s definitely the next step for me he said There will be a lot of different promotions who see this fight so it s a good chance to go out and show what I can do

Windy City Sports 3 Yellow Horn enjoying European adventure It s a long way from Brocket to Austria but Colton Yellow Horn feels right at home in Europe The Brocket native and former Lethbridge Hurricane standout took his game across the pond for the 2013 2014 season and has found it a good fit for his game I really enjoy playing in Europe said Yellow Horn It is a bit different than playing in North America with the language change and the culture but at the same time it s exciting because you are experiencing new things You are also getting to travel the world and visit different places It is a bigger ice surface and more of a wide open style game I feel it is more of a skilled game and there is a lot less hitting than North America as well Yellow Horn began the season with Plzen HC in the Czech league After only 11 games he rejoined Znojmo Orli HC in Austria who he had played with the previous season It resulted in a 42 point campaign for the left winger Sometimes things don t work out with a team he said Things just weren t working out in Plzen and I was fortunate enough that Orli Znojmo took me back The move to Europe came after a solid year with the ECHL s Ontario Reign and the AHL s Manchester Monarchs with the Los Angeles Kings organization Despite the chance to continue playing in North America Yellow Horn decided to make the move I was at the age of where I figured my chances aren t the best to make the NHL and I have always wanted to play in Europe he said I had some opportunities to play in North America after the successful season I had but I just thought that at the time that Europe was the best place for me Yellow Horn has been the hometown hero as well as playing thousands of miles away from home He says both present positive and negatives Anytime you get to play in your home town is amazing with family and friends coming to every game he said I think being separated from family is harder on my family than it is on me as I am used to being away all the time This season was the first season in 5 years that my mom was able to watch me play Does the former Hurricane still Steamers take bronze Results for the Provincial B Wheelchair Basketball Championships March 25 26 at 1st Choice Savings Center Day One Lethbridge 36 Saskatchewan 46 Lethbridge 30 Calgary 20 Saskatchewan 43 Calgary 37 Edmonton 49 Grande Prairie 25 Edmonton 32 Manitoba 26 Grande Prairie 43 Manitoba 27 Day Two Semi Final 1 Lethbridge 45 Edmonton 52 Lethbridge Leading scorer John Banman with 16 pts Semi Final 2 Saskatchewan 45 Grande Prairie 41 Calgary earned fifth place over Manitoba 43 29 Lethbridge earned third place over Grande Prairie 41 36 Lethbridge Leading scorer Henry Schmidth with 16 pts Edmonton earned first place over Saskatchewan 48 36 Badminton players from the region chase birdies during the Lethbridge Invitational at Chinook High School April 1 follow the hometown team Yellow Horn says he s pleased to see the success the WHL squad has had in recent seasons I follow them more and more now and I am happy with the progress they have made in the past couple of seasons he said I really enjoyed my time with the team when I played There wasn t too much pressure to play at all as we all played because we loved it and just tried to have fun out there Does Yellow Horn plan on a return to play closer to home He says he s enjoying his time in Europe and will continue to skate in the Austrian league I will be returning to Orli Znojmo next season and I don t see myself playing in North America again in the near future COBS BREAD LETHBRIDGE 21 Southgate Blvd S Lethbridge Alberta 403 393 9286

4 Windy City Sports Atoms lay claim to league title 2017 CAHL ATOM TIER ONE CHAMPIONSHIP PLAYOFF SERIES Game One Saturday March 18 the opening game of the CAHL Tier One Atom Championship series a best of three showdown had the No 1 ranked Lethbridge United Rentals Hurricanes Red slotted against the No 6 Strathmore Storm at Adams Ice Center Strathmore Storm was fresh off an upset series against the Brooks Jr Bandits and the Hurricanes Red had just eliminated the Bert Mac s Hurricane White in an overtime thriller During the regular league schedule Strathmore took both games versus the Hurricane Red indicating an obstinate opponent was about to execute a repeat of an earlier success against their southern opponent But the Hurricane Red learned from their earlier failure and came prepared It took the Red 9 minutes to get on the scoreboard with their opening goal by Carter Cunningham to grab the lead 1 0 This confidence boost triggered a series of 3 more tallies before the end of the first period to lift the Canes Red to a 4 0 lead and a route looked possible Tallies by Cameron Hillaby and two more by Carter Cunningham with his hat trick intact gave the Red some breathing room But the Storm finally showed up and started the counter attack They chipped away at the deficit with 3 unanswered markers to be down 4 3 after two periods In the final period the Storm got the tying goal at 9 19 and the comeback looked almost complete But the Hurricanes scored at 13 54 of the third on a tally by Riley Hillaby to again take a slim 5 4 lead The Storm continued to press but could not come up with the equalizing marker in spite of heavy pressure on the host s net The tally turned out to be the game winner and gave the Red a 1 0 lead in the series Brenner Fyffe got the win in the Canes net and Cole Clymer had 3 assists Game 2 was in Strathmore Sunday March 19 at the Strathmore Blue Arena WEATHER WARNING from the Strathmore Weather Watch A high level Hurricane originating from the Lethbridge area also known as the Hurricane Red is tracking in a northerly direction and is expected to hit the City of Strathmore at Spartans bring home medals Spartan Swim Club Results Meredith Franks and Gracee Valgardson competed in the southern AB Provincials in Calgary Feb 18 20 Joshua Adams qualified for and swam at the Swim AB provincial championship meet in Edmonton April 1 in Medicine Hat Joshua Adams 2 golds Jameson Twigg 1 bronze Our next meet is April 8 9 in High River Session 3 trial week begins April 17 20 from 4 30 5 30 at Fritz Sick Everyone welcome Session runs until June 29 The United Rentals Hurricanes Red celebrate their league championship March 19 about 4 p m Sunday afternoon The weather experts are urging the preparation for any and all consequences unless proper precautions are taken Residents are requested to stay indoors The Hurricane was expected to last for several hours When the weather front finally arrived on time the Hurricane Red was at full velocity and opened the first period with 4 unanswered goals in front of a stunned standing room home crowd who could only appreciate the valiant effort of their host team But on this day the Hurricane Red would run its course and eliminate any come back by the hosts Scoring for the Red was Cole Clymer Carter Cunningham and a pair of highlight reel goals by Kasey Russell Jr thereby taking a firm 4 0 first period lead In the middle frame the Red added 2 more markers to take a strangle hold 6 0 lead before the Storm finally hit the scoreboard The Red snipers were Dayton Tailfeathers and Cameron Hillaby giving the Red a 6 1 lead after two The Hurricane Red lasted well into the final frame as the massive attack on the Storm was not yet complete The Red added 3 more goals to stretch the score to a 9 1lead Goals came from a pair by Carter Cunningham and a single by Zane Rajcic The hosts got a final tally to make the final score 9 2 for the Red and the celebration was about to begin The only debris left after the Hurricane blew itself out was the smattering of gloves helmets and sticks on the ice surface as the Hurricane Red began their celebration of the victory one which culminated in an undefeated streak of 20 consecutive games thus crowning them as Atom Tier One Champions of the Central Alberta Hockey League for 2017 Progressive Fighting Academy Mixed Martial Arts 1007 3 Ave N Muay Thai Kick Boxing 403 327 3744 The Prairie Baseball Academy takes on the Vauxhall Jets in early season baseball action March 25 at Lloyd Nolan Park
