Dec 17th International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

Gary Leon Ridgway, now at the age of 67 (born February 18, 1949) was sentenced by the King County Superior Court Judge Rodney Jones to 48 life sentences  with no possibilities of parole and one life sentences, to be served consecutively. He was also sentenced to an additional 10 years for tampering with the evidence for each of the 48 victims. adding to 480 years to his 48 years life sentences.*

"Wondering to yourself what the heck does these Ridgway had done till he was served with stiffer sentences which had been condemning to him by the Superior Court Judge and what are so interesting or create any connection to the Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers which were the main story point for the brief introduction to the discussion here."

Well, during the 1980s and 1990s, Ridgway had committed a hideous and vicious crime where Ridgway is believed to have murdered at least about 71 women and girls (according to Ridgway, in an interview conducted by the local Sheriff Reichert in 2001) near Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. Where Ridgway himself had even lost count to the alleged number of murder that he had committed where the majority of murder occurred between 1982 and 1984. Initially, Ridgway had been convicted of 48 separate murder charges, as a part of his plea bargain, an additional conviction was added, bringing the total number of conviction to 49, making him the most prolific American serial killer of history. Most of the victim were alleged sex workers, other women in a vulnerable position and runaway underage girls. He will normally strangle the women by using his hand or sometimes using ligatures. Where he will dump their body in the forested and overgrown area in King County, often returning to the dead bodies to have sexual intercourse with them.

The brief history of the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers

For the past 13 years, on the date of 17 December where the entire Regional and International Sex Worker Communities and the Sex Worker Organisation will seek to come together to remember on those who they may have lost this year, and to renew their commitment to the on-going struggle for empowerment, visibility, and rights for all sex workers. Where they will also renew their commitment in Solidarity, for the majority victims, Violence Against Sex Workers is just not violence against sex workers - it's also violence against transwomen, against women of colour, against drug users, against immigrants.

Where Project X the only local based sex workers led - a none profit organisation in Singapore is also joining in Solidarity with the other global sex worker communities and sex worker organisation in the attempt to end on the marginalisation and victimisation of all sex workers without also fighting on the transphobia, racism, stigma, and criminalization of drug use, and xenophobia. Just like in most part of the global world of the sex industry, even in the Europe and worst of all in the Central Asian countries which also including Singapore, incorporating with the laws that criminalising and penalising sex work had drive sex workers to lead their sex work underground and had deprived them off on their ability to control over their working conditions, and undermining their ability to consistently engage in safer sexual behaviour.

These repressive legal framework trigger discrimination, abuse and other forms of violence against sex workers by the police, clients, third parties or the media, had further contributed on their marginalisation. Repressive laws governing sex work are the most striking manifestation of the structural violence against them. Not only that they are deeply rooted in stereotypical images of sex workers - presenting them as immoral or anti-social, and therefore deserving punishment, or, conversely, as powerless in  need to be rescued - but they also contributed to the sex workers' social marginalisation both as a worker and a member of the society.
