President’s Message
2016 was a remarkable year at NorthStar Credit Union. Over
a weekend in October, our management team and board met
to discuss and plan our future course. Every business decision
made is driven by the question; How does this benet our
members? With that in mind, we revised our mission statement
into six words; “We help you achieve nancial success.” After
that, we committed the following promise to our members.
We promise to:
• Simplify your life
• Work in your best interest
• Provide solutions that help you achieve nancial success
• Deliver a prompt, consistent and positive experience
These are important promises, and we understand the challenge
of living up to them. It keeps us focused each and every day.
Let us know if we’re delivering on this promise for you because
feedback from our members is important. Thank you for helping
make this past year a success and we look ahead to an even
stronger partnership with you in years to come.

Keeping Your Devices Secure
Use Security Software
Install anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a rewall. Set your
preference to update these protections often. Protect against intrusions
and infections that can compromise your computer les or passwords by
installing security patches for your operating system and other software
programs.
Avoid Phishing Emails
Don’t open les, click on links, or download programs sent by strangers.
Opening a le from someone you don’t know could expose your system
to a computer virus or spyware that captures your passwords or other
information you type.
Be Wise About Wi-Fi
Before you send personal information over your laptop or smartphone on
a public wireless network in a coffee shop, library, airport, hotel, or other
public place, see if your information will be protected. If you use an
encrypted website, it protects only the information you send to and from
that site. If you use a secure wireless network, all the information you
send on that network is protected.
Lock Up Your Laptop
Keep nancial information on your laptop only when necessary. Don’t use
an automatic login feature that saves your user name and password, and
always log off when you’re nished. That way, if your laptop is stolen, it
will be harder for a thief to get at your personal information.
Read Privacy Policies
Yes, they can be long and complex, but they tell you how the site
maintains accuracy, access, security, and control of the personal
information it collects; how it uses the information, and whether it
provides information to third parties. If you don’t see or understand a
site’s privacy policy, consider doing business elsewhere.
Please be aware NorthStar Credit Union will never call and ask for
your member number or personal information.

How the Average American Overspends
(and what you can do to avoid being one of them)
How do you spend money each month? If you overspend, you are not alone. In fact, most Americans
spend more than they earn, with the average person spending $1.33 for every $1 earned. And, often, it is
on unnecessary things.
Daily Coffee Habit adds up to:
$1,092/yr
Daily Soda Habit Equals:
$671/yr
Each week, pick one day to treat yourself to a coffee at your
favorite shop. Make it at home the rest of the week. If soda is your
thing, avoid the convenience store and purchase in bulk at a
warehouse store.
Americans Eat Lunch Out:
66% purchase daily
Average Worker Spends Eating Out:
$1,924/yr
Spend less on lunch by bringing a sandwich from home. On
Sunday, prepare dinners for the week that you can easily warm up
after work instead of buying food on your way home.
Average Woman Spends on Shoes:
$370/yr
Average Person Spends on Cloths:
$1700/yr
Don’t shop for fun. Before you buy something, determine if you
really need it. If you need to buy clothes, look for sales. Or try mixing
different accessories with your current clothes for a new look.
Average Cost of Gym Membership:
$58/month
Average % Never use Membership:
67%
Consider community centers that offer all the perks of regular gyms,
like free weights and fitness classes. Go for a walk or jog at your
local park. Or do yoga or pilates at home using an exercise DVD.
Average National Cable Bill:
$90/month
Expectations in 2020:
$2020/month
Call your provider to see if they have any promotions and ask about
more economical plans. Also, look into streaming services, which
may offer many of the same shows at a lower monthly cost.
Average American Vacation Spending:
$1,200/person or $4,000/family
Need a break? Try a staycation. Catch up on your TV shows and
the books you’ve been wanting to read. Or play board games with
your family. Your kids will appreciate it regardless of where you are!
