san francisco high rise Studio Integrated Design Fall 2016 Critic David Crutchfield Duration 15 Weeks As the capstone to the B S degree at NDSU this project asked us to consider everything from structural systems and hvac design to zoning requirements and culminating with 160 page document of process and design development pg 01
pg 02
pg 03
Vertical structural study of spans and shifting structural bays At 60 stories and in an earthquake zone this project asked to consider the implications of earthquake mitigation and column depth for optimal use of floor space while maintaining structural integrity The truss system used is based on a shifting floor plate that allows for the same size and length truss on every floor while still maintaining the dynamic sloped form of the building design pg 04
pg 05
Height variance and zoning studies Originally zoned for a 13 story multi use residential building a proposal was required in order to request a variance This proposal included sun and shadow studies as well as master planning integration concerning the new Transbay Development Plan for the city pg 06
pg 07
Site responsive breathing building facade In an attempt to increase the sustainability as well as usable square footage an integrated facade was designed This saw tooth glazing system was designed to take in outside air filter and cool it before allowing it to enter the building and circulate naturally before exiting the permeable atrium through natural convection currents created by the combination of mirrored glazing and the overall orientation of the facade system pg 08
pg 09
A multitude of integrated spaces This design exploration sought to integrate a multiplicity of programs into a cohesive design language while still maintaining a singular form among the San Francisco skyline With the lower levels acting as public and lobby space for the floors above there is increased transparency and openness with the street scape and more privatized office spaces above pg 10
a study in light Studio Top Ten Spring 2017 Critic Ron Ramsay Duration 15 Weeks An elective design seminar where we were asked to choose our current top ten designers artists or architects and create a replicable study model showcasing the prowess of our chosen figures The broadness of choosing one figure being problematic I chose to study and represent characteristics expressed through light The currently completed representations are of the Piano Pavilion at the Kimbell Art Museum The Rolex Learning Center by SANNA and Plato s Allegory of the Cave pg 11
pg 12
pg 13
pg 14
chicago hyperloop Studio ACSA Steel Competition Spring 2016 Critic Regin Schwaen Duration 7 Weeks A proposal for the future integration of the hyperloop transit system this project sought to create a connection regionally as well as contextually within Chicago With suspending the project over the river it also begins to create a iconic gateway to the city of Chicago pg 15
pg 16
pg 17
Prefabricated steel structure Located over the Chicago River the hyperloop transportation hub was designed to be constructed without interrupting it s context Through a series of unitized systems roof plane sections suspended platforms and double layer facade the entirety of this complex form can be fabricated off site anywhere in the world and be brought to the site via the Chicago River and then be pieced together section by section pg 18
pg 19
