SAINT CLEMENTS CASTLE (A HISTORIC PROSPECTUS) The architectural design of Saint Clements began with the 16th century castles of Europe. Centuries later, a New York architect named Sidney Algernon Bell incorporated several interesting features in the manor house, which include the long balcony modeled after the Inn of William the Conqueror at Divers, France, and the Art Gallery which was modeled after the Great Hall of the Chateau of Langeais. The two Norman towers add a distinctive feature to the French Tudor entrance. The 17th century saw the rapid growth of the Connecticut River towns. In the Middletown area, the Taylor family settled to become farmers, ministers and barristers. Many years later, Howard Taylor, while working as a Solicitor, secured a large sum of money and, together with his wife Gertrude, proceeded and built the now historic Saint Clements Castle in 1898. Granite blocks for the walls were brought to the site by oxen. The wood is chestnut and oak, which were plentiful and nearly indestructible. The actual construction of the Castle was handled by workmen from the Middletown/Portland area. Many were Italian and Irish immigrants who walked to work each day. Evidence of their careful craftsmanship is still visible in the woodwork and masonry. Notice, especially, the towers and exterior garden wall. THE SAINT CLEMENTS FOUNDATION In 1993, the historic Saint Clements Castle was gifted to the Saint Clements Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization formulated for the preservation of the Castle, its gardens and art treasures. The Trustees began a detailed restoration of the gables, walkways, balconies and the courtyards. The Trustees love for art, antiques and historical appreciation is now evident in the Art Gallery and throughout the Estate. Saint Clements Estate and Marina with over one mile of riverfront, is now preserved for future generations. From its inception, the Foundation has supported programs for the Homeless, Cancer Research, Hospice and Programs for the Local Children. 15 www.saintclementscastle.com

Should you choose to name your tables, you would need to supply your own frames. 6. Do you provide any ceremony decorations? We do not provide any ceremony decorations. It is the sole responsibility of the florist you have hired. All ceremony decorations must be taken down at the conclusion of the wedding reception. 7. Is a rehearsal possible? At the final meeting the week of the wedding the Banquet Manager will detail out a full processional with you, and on your wedding day will line up your bridal party and cue all those involved. 8. Do you offer a food tasting? Since, we are not a restaurant we do not offer tastings. Every February we host our Bridal Show where you can sample hors d’oeuvres and pasta, as well as enjoy cake samples. We also have our Romantic Dinners throughout the year that some of our couples like to attend. It gives them a firsthand opportunity to experience an event at Saint Clements. Please keep in mind that there are charges for the Romantic Dinners. 9. Can we bring in liquor and food from an outside source? No Food or liquor may be brought in from an outside source. 10. What else will Saint Clements Castle Staff set up for our event? We will put out the items that you have brought in; place cards, toasting glasses, guest book, photographs, printed menu cards, napkins, favors, amenities baskets, disposable cameras, cake knife, sever and card box. It is the responsibility of the florist to put out the centerpiece. 11. What is the administrative service charge? It is for the cost of handling the event such as legal fees, contracts etc. and it is taxable. 12. Are candles permitted? No candles are permitted. 16 13.
