How to Create Encrypted Archives

Please Note: PeaZip uses AES-256 encryption by default. If the password or passphrase is lost the encrypted archive file will be inaccessible.

  • Click on the padlock icon to enter a password and optionally a keyfile; the icon is featured both in PeaZip’s file browser’s status bar and in archive creation interface.
  • To hide names of files and directories contained in the archive check “Encrypt also filenames”, please note that it will be applied only if the archive will be created in a format supporting this function, like 7Z and ARC.

NOTE: In the archive creation interface, alongside the padlock icon, there is a color line (red for weak password, green for strong password) at the bottom of the form to visually inform if encryption is set and if the current archive format supports encryption.

  • Please click on OK and then OK again to create the password encrypted file. It is highly recommended to attach the password encrypted file and send as an attachment using email. Then send a separate email with the password to recipient.
