COMMITTEE President – Keith Ondarchie I have felt for quite some time now that there was a need to create a community that embraces all things “Dane”. That is for both owners and their Danes to experience the fun and comradery of life. This is the fundamental element of establishing “Great Dane Lovers”. I am really excited with our Club, our Committee, our members and our future. Vice President – Alisha Watson Hi I’m Alisha. I am also often called the crazy Dane lady. I am owned by 5 Great Danes (at present). I am all about the dog whether it be show, play, obedience, education or anything in between. My life is my dogs Treasurer – Coral Ondarchie Hi! My name is Coral and I am married to Keith. I have had Great Danes for about 25 years. I just cannot see my life without one. At the moment I have two Dane’s, Morgan and Targa. I love to be out and about with them at my side doing all sorts of things such as walking, socializing, showing, rally, obedience. I am looking forward to catching up with you at one of our GDL events. Events Coordinator – Jaz Briscoe I'm Jaz! I am owned by my Dane 'Slick'. In our spare time we enjoy going to dog shows, bike rides and to the beach. We hope to meet many more fellow Dane lovers through this wonderful club. Communications – Alana Chipizubov Hi, I have grown up around Great Danes and have always loved their fun loving, gentle and cheeky nature. My 1-year-old also loves the Danes so my family and I look forward to seeing you out and about at the GDL events!

KEITH’S KOMMENTS From the President Wow! Our club formally started on 2/8/2016 and we have an ever growing membership and events calendar. Our club was established to provide an avenue for pet owners to get together with our Danes and enjoy life. Coral ad I have owned Danes for many years and over time we have met many like-minded friends . Over the years we have been too many “doggie events” and met people who were searching for activities to do with their Danes. We met a lovely lady called Valerie who went everywhere with her Dane – if my Dane is not invited -I’m not going. So where can I go that includes my Dane. We also met a lady called Susan who spoke about the Great Lovers Assoc of Western Australia and the great work they were doing for Dane pets and owners. Well that started it. The GDLWA model was exactly what Victoria needed. How do we provide activities? How do we set up a professional club? Sounds easy-set up an incorporated company – just forms and fees. Insurance – we spoke with many companies and learnt a lot about potential exposure to litigation and we covered all the questions, filled in the forms and paid the unbelievable fee. Then the hard bits. The WEB site and Facebook not my thing – lots of discussion and research all done – we don’t want just a boring WEB site and Facebook – it needs to be vibrant and constantly updated – all done thanks Alana. Events - lots suggested and organized - Corals job – thanks. Next. How do we make sure the club is vibrant for years to come? This is up to the members to embrace and contribute. How do they know what to do? There will be at least 3 Members meetings each year to discuss all aspects of the club – please come along. The GDLWA has been a great support to us and after about 8 months we set up our Club with an ambitious plan, full incorporation, insurance, structure, bank accounts and operational infrastructure. So off we went. We got Alisha, Trevor and Jaz on board. We held our first AGM with the committee and 2 members Vonnie and Paul (as required by consumer Affairs) and launched the WEB site and Face book. We have decided that in addition to our members events we will have “meet and greet” play dates in the East and West for non-members to see how our club operates and enjoy Danes and enjoy life as we do. We are now 2 months old! I am really thrilled with the comments and support so far. We have developed a strong growing membership. We have had some really good events and we have a growing list of future events. With the summer weather to look forward too we should have great time at our Christmas Kepala function and please encourage as many Dane Lovers as you can come along. Please send any suggestions, comments or feedback to us at info@greatdanelovers.com.au so we can cater for all of our members. Thanks for your support of our club and I look forward to seeing you at the next event. Keith – President. to

WETLANDS WALK 8TH October 2016 Blessing of The Animals & the Wetlands Walk with Lunch – Saturday 8th October Great Dane Lovers will be joining people all around the world celebrating the feast day of the Patron Saint of Animals, Saint Francis of Assisi. It's customary that in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures, animals are gathered for a special ceremony called the Blessing of the Animals. Our Great Dane Lovers member, Reverend Eden Nicholls will be blessing all animals in attendance. We will be meeting in the main street of Yea (look out for the Danes) at 10am where there are a range of coffee shops for you to grab a coffee and/or some morning tea. Then, join us for the Wetlands Walk (map attached for your reference) to Valerie’s home (Great Dane Lovers member) for the Blessing of the Animals and a BBQ lunch. Lunch is simply a gold coin donation and if you would like to contribute with a salad or desert please let us know. Please RSVP to info@greatdanelovers.com.au for catering purposes. We would like to thank Valerie Redpath for organising this event for the club and offering her home for lunch, we very much appreciate the support! DANE’S BEDTIME PRAYER Now I lay me down to sleep, The king-size bed is soft and deep, I sleep right in the centre groove, My human beings can hardly move, I’ve trapped their legs, They’re tucked in tight, And here is where I pass the night. No one disturbs me or dares to intrude, Til morning comes and “I want food”, I sneak up slowly to begin, And nibble on my human’s chin, For mornings here, it’s time to play, I always seem to get my way. So thank you Lord, for giving me, This human person that I see, The one who hugs and holds me tight, And shares their bed with me at night.

LUX LAUNCH EVENT LUX FOUNDRY After searching for a central location to launch our Club we decided to work with the LUX FOUNDRY in Brunswick to find a suitable time and date. We had to give them an idea of how many Danes would attend to allow them to set aside an area for us. I guessed 15. Coral and I planned the day and to focus on speaking to the potential members about our plans. Coral had to show a friends Dane in the morning at Bulla and we would then go to the Lux. Great plan. BUT Coral and Leroy won and had to stay for the best puppy in show. I went with our two Danes and set up the banner and got ready. Many Danes (25+) and people arrived and sent the staff into frenzy. One of the Staff members had never seen a Great Dane and was a bit nervous. How do we serve around these many massive dogs? All was fixed in a few moments and we had a very enjoyable day and the staff were great. During the afternoon I was approached by Kerry who asked what is this all about and when I told her about our club she went to her car and drove off only to return a few minutes later with her Dane Eadie and her partner Paul – they lived in the next street! Everyone had a great time and we had many new members from the day.

WYNDHAM PET EXPO What a wonderful day we had at the Wyndham Pet & Animal Expo. The council staff who worked so hard to put this day together really do deserve a very big pat on the back for a job very well done. The organization on the day was fantastic, nothing left to chance, and even managed to arrange for perfect “Dane” weather. Our Dane’s were very popular with the public. Everyone wanted to get up close to our “gentle giants” for a cuddle, pat or a photo. The Danes were a credit to the breed. They were so patient and tolerant of everyone, even the over enthusiastic ones. My Morgan just loved all the attention, couldn’t get enough. Whereas Targa was a little overwhelmed at times so retreated to her crate, but then couldn’t handle not being part of it all so demanded to come out again. This went on, “in and out” of her crate for most of the day. There were lots of great questions asked in relation to health, diet and what it is like living with Danes and hopefully we were able to answer all of them satisfactorily. A very big THANK YOU to everyone who came, some travelling long distances and those travelling not so far to help Great Dane Lovers showcase our wonderful breed. I, for one, am looking forward to doing it all again next year. Coral Ondarchie

SPRING SAFETY After a chilly winter, now is a great time to get out in the garden. Your pet may wish to keep you company but don't forget these hidden dangers! Snail and Slug Bait: sprinkled on the garden or even stored in the box, these are very attractive to pets. Ingestion of small quantities can be rapidly fatal. Be aware that products that claim they are pet safe have a bitter taste which only acts as a deterrent. Some pets will still eat these highly toxic baits so consider whether these baits are absolutely necessary in your garden Fertiliser: Pets love the smell and taste of some fertilisers and if eaten, these can prove rapidly toxic or even fatal Compost: The garden compost heap is very tasty to your pet but the contents contain bacteria, moulds and toxins, all of which can make your pet very sick Insecticides and weed killers: These are toxic to pets and should be safely stored and locked up Avoid poisonous plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, daffodil bulbs and daphne. Lilies, if ingested, can cause kidney failure in cats so if in doubt pull them out! Oh, and don't forget that rodent baits are very dangerous and unfortunately attractive to pets. Ingestion causes internal bleeding - sometimes two to three weeks later If your pet ingests any of the above, it is best to contact your Vet IMMEDIATELY for advice.
