Panda's and Natural Selection

Panda's and Natural Selection

Panda's split from the bear family 3 million years ago thru natural selection and mutations.Changing from a meat eater to a plant eater.

  • Mutations to the paw - added thumb to grasp woody bamboo.
  • Mutation to the digestive tract to make it easier to digest woody bamboo.

These changes took millions of years.

*Little known fact panda's eat 12 hours out of 24.

Panda's do not compete for food with other animals but humans have forced them into higher ground.China has made sure they are protected now as there are under 2000 in the wild.

Human destruction of natural habitat has pushed the pandas high in  the mountains of china. They have no natural preditors in the wild.

Since the 1970's china has made sure to protect panda's habitat.Population is on the rise.

Zoo's have tried to breed in captivity but it has not been very succsessful due to, *females are only in heat 2-7 days a year,

*males do not instinctivly known how to mate.

*1864 in the wild

* 16.8 % increase in panda population in the wild in 10 years.

* 11.8 % increase in panda's geographic range since 2003 due to china increasing habitat for them.

Left alone with enough habitat (bamboo forest) the panda should be able to survive and population should increase on its own.

Emergence of panda bears - 3 million years ago thru natural selection and mutations pandas broke from the bear population. Changing from a meat eater to a plant eater.
