Spring ’Cane Kickoff is designed
to give students and families
an exciting introduction
to the University of
Miami. The program
will help you become
acclimated to campus
and introduce you to
faculty, administrators,
and other students at
the University of Miami
that are invested in your
success. Our goal is to assist
you by offering information and
support to make the transition to college as seamless as possible
for both students and families. Please take a moment to review
this guide and note that family members attend separate sessions
from students during our orientation program as the sessions are
designed to meet each group’s particular needs and interests.
We look forward to working with you during this exciting time.

Orientation Kickoff & Orientation Group Meeting
Shalala Student Center, Grand Ballroom
Join us for a spirited kickoff to Spring Orientation 2017. Come learn
what it means to be a Miami Hurricane while interacting with staff,
students, and Sebastian the Ibis. A full buffet-style dinner will be
provided.
Orientation Group Meetings for students will immediately follow
the Spring Orientation Kickoff.

Watsco Center
Join your Orientation Leader and Orientation group to cheer on the
Miami Hurricanes Men’s Basketball team as they play the University
of Notre Dame.

Dr. Michelle Maldonado, Assistant Provost of Undergraduate
Education and Professor of Religious Studies, will welcome all
new students to their academic journey at the University of Miami.
Dr. Maldonado will address how you can construct your learning
around your individual strengths, interests, and goals through the
Cognates Program of General Education.

Enjoy a local Miami continental breakfast with other incoming
transfer students, and meet your Transfer Assistants for the
semester. Transfer Assistants serve as peer mentors that help you
transition to the “U”.

Orientation groups will rotate between the following two sessions

Emergency Preparedness and Campus Safety
Shalala Student Center, Activities Room
Learn important strategies about campus safety, hurricane
preparation, and response to on-campus emergencies.
Theater in Action: Bystander Intervention
Shalala Student Center, Grand Ballroom, Center
This isn’t your average theatre performance-you could make a
difference and be the star! In this highly interactive session, actors
will invite students from the audience to the stage to learn how
to intervene in sensitive situations while learning about campus
resources, preventing gender violence, and looking out for your
fellow ‘Canes.

Lunch Break
Take a break and have lunch with your Orientation Leader and
new classmates. See you OL for your meal voucher to the dining
hall.

Information Sessions 3 & 4
Orientation groups will rotate between the following two sessions
during Information Session 3 (1:30pm-2:25pm) and Information
Session 4 (2:35pm-3:30pm). Your Orientation Leader will provide you
with your schedule.
Becoming U
Shalala Student Center, Grand Ballroom, East
Join Counseling Center clinicians for an interactive workshop to
focus on your transition to the UM community. Activities will be
centered around preparing for normal adjustment experiences,
building connections with others, exploring your stress coping
strategies, and learning how to show self-compassion.
Diversifying Your College Experience
Shalala Student Center, Grand Ballroom, West
The undergraduate student body at UM is one of the most diverse
in the country. What can you learn from the people you are about to
meet? This interactive session will introduce you to the diversity that
surrounds you both on campus and in the community.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is the University of Miami’s first
service day of the Spring Semester! Join us on as we work to uphold

Counseling Center, and the University Ombudsperson will discuss
your students’ college experience and what you might expect
during this year.

Representatives from the Toppel Career Center, Study Abroad, the
Camner Center for Academic Resources, and the Ofce of Civic
and Community Engagement will discuss student learning and
academic support.

Representatives from selected academic schools/colleges will
provide an overview of the advising and registration processes
that students will experience during the orientation program and
beyond.

Break
All parents and families are encouraged to take a break and walk
around campus to become more familiar with the University. Please
check in with the Orientation staff if you have any last-minute
questions.
