Keep Calm and Think Before You Post Digitally 

Blog: A website or web page that is ran by one person or a small group that is written in a conversation style or informational style.

 

Flaming: Insulting between internet users, often involving profanity. Also it can be insults back and forth with a group teaming up on a single victim.

 

P2P: Peer to peer computing or networking is a distributed application architecture that partitions tasks or work loads between peers. 

Phishing: the activity of defrauding an online account holder of financial information by posing as a legitimate company.

 

Podcast: a digital audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or portable media player, typically available as a series, new installments of which can be received by subscribers automatically.

 

Aggregator: a website that collects related items of content and displays them or links to them.  

Digital Life 101

 

Tips: 

  • Have 12 Characters, Minimum: You need to choose a password that's long enough
  • Includes Numbers, Symbols, Capital Letters, and Lower-Case Letters: Use a mix of different types of characters to make the password harder to crack.
  • Don’t just use one password. 
  • Don’t use dictionary words
  • Don’t post it in plain sight

  • Never give out your password to anyone.
  • Create passwords that are easy to remember but hard for others to guess. 
  • Make the password at least 8 characters long. 
  • Include numbers, capital letters and symbols.

Bootlegging - taking, transporting, or selling illegally copied or recorded material Camcording - sneaking a camcorder or cell phone into a movie theater or live performance with plans to record

Copyright - if a dude has this, dont even think about trying to reproduce their original work

Digital watermarking - anti- heft device to identify pirated movie and music bootlegging

DRM - Digital Rights Management (software that helps prevent or even track pirating activity. ESA - Entertainment Software Association; these peeps are doing their part in the fight against gaming piracy

Fair use - using media for your school projects the legit way so you are following the guidelines of ethical use of digital media

Infringement - disobeying the law

Innovation - a fresh invention/idea. This is what we all should be doing rather than swiping old ideas from other people.

Intellectual property - innovation that is published

IP address - a barcode that shows the identification address for a computer. Every computer has one if its checked up with the ISP.

ISP - Internet Service Provider (the dudes who hook you up with Internet)

mp3 - digital music file used in most portable music players

mp4 - Media file type found mostly in iTunes but can be found elsewhere

MPAA - Motion Picture Association (fly peeps who rate movies and educate others on film intellectual property)

Resellers - dudes who sell illegal, printed, material to people. They commonly sell things on Craigslist, eBay, flea markets, garage sales, or black markets

RIAA - Recording Industry Association of America (dudes who make sure music artists don't get ripped off)

Safeguarding - its like your own digital Chuck Norris guarding your material Stealth taper - a dude who records music at concerts with plans to sell

Virus - a nasty computer hacking or crashing software program that is often attached to downloaded pirated files

  • Beware of too much information
  • Don't trust verify 
  • Control comments 
  • Avoid sharing people personal information
  • Have a parent watching

Rules: 

 

  • Don't violate your company's social networking policies
  • Don't post illegal activities

  • Don't bully

  • Never Rely on Privacy Settings 100%

 

Social Media 

 

What is it? 

 

Usuing any type of electronic deviece to bully a person by sending messages of something threatening or intemedating

Cyberbullying

What to do? 

  • Know that it's not your fault
  • Don't respond
  • Save the evidence
  • Tell the person to stop
  • Reach out for help – especially if the behavior is really getting to you.
  • Protect your accounts
  • If you know someone who is is being bullied, take action.

 

 

How to protect yourself:

  • Protect your accounts
  • Do not give out your personal information over the phone or anywhere unless your completely sure. 
  • Always think about what you post.
  • Keep your password a secret from other kids.
  • Think about who sees what you post online.
  • Keep your parents involved.
  • Talk to an adult you trust about any messages you get or things you see online that make you feel some type of way.
