THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO YEARBOOK DESIGN 2 FONT SPACING There are a few different ways to add or remove space to your body of text In general the more space added to your text the easier it is to read However if you add too much space it will appear as if there are large gaps in your text layout KERNING Kerning is the space between two letters that are next to one another You would adjust the kerning if there are character pairs spaced too wide apart You adjust kerning to avoid gaps in your text TRACKING Tracking is similar to kerning But instead of adjusting the space between two letters at a time you can adjust the spacing between large lines or groups of text You can open the text by adding extra space or tighten by reducing the space LEADING Leading is the space between lines of text When printing presses required type to be set by hand pieces of actual lead were used to create space between the lines of text Share this eBook www TreeRing com 50

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO YEARBOOK DESIGN 3 FONT ALIGNMENT The way you align your text can make it easier to read There are a multiple ways to align your text and different reasons why you may choose one style of alignment over another LEFT ALIGN Left aligned is when your text is flushed with the left hand side of the margin Since text that is left aligned is easier to read your body copy will most likely be aligned left CENTER ALIGN Center aligned text is simply aligned with the center of your margin You might center align a caption to go with a photo RIGHT ALIGN Right aligned is when your text is flushed with the right hand side of the margin You might right align a quote or caption if it looks better in your layout JUSTIFY Justifying text is when the text is aligned to both margins If you justify your text you will usually have to adjust it to bridge the loose lines or the gaps of space Share this eBook www TreeRing com 51
