History and Importance
The National Alliance on Mental Illness was founded in 1979, NAMI has affiliates in every state and in more than 1,100 local communities across the country. NAMI is the nation's largest mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of American's affected by mental illness.
NAMI provides advocacy, education, support and public awareness so that all individuals and families affected by mental illness can build better lives. To meet that goal, NAMI is building a movement. We seek to broaden public awareness and inclusion in every part of our alliance. We seek to increase our visibility and impact; strengthen our voice as a unified organization of lived experiences and maximize our outreach to and engagement with all communities.(www.nami.org/About-NAMI/Policy-Platform/1-Identity-and-Mission)
The National Alliance on Mental Illness is focused on educating, supporting, and spreading awareness so that people who are affected can build better lives. NAMI is supported by donations and sponsors so that they can set up local campaigns to spread awareness of mental illness. Their most recent campaign is the #Stigmafree Campaign. This campaign was used to spread awareness to end the social stigma of people who are living with mental illness. Many employers will not allow people with mental illness be employed by them because they think mental illness means that people are irresponsible, dangerous, or unable to make their own decisions. The #Stigmafree campaign is trying to get rid of those social stigmas.
