There where many obstacles on the way to the great planes.

The Goldrush started on January 24,1848.  James Marshall first discovered gold at John sutter's mill in northern california.  Many people traveled West to find gold.

The steel plow was invented by John Deere in 1837.  It was used to break up tough soil.  It was very useful to the people in the mid-west.

Coolies where Chinese imigrants who came to America to look for work.  They were hired to build the Transcontinental Railroad.  Coolies where treated very badly.

The Transcontinental Railroad was completed on 1869.  It was made so that people could go West much easier.  It streched from the east coast to the west coast of the u.s.

The Great Plains had unpradictable weather.  It was mainly inhabited by Native Americans until the homestead act of 1862 wich sent many homesteaders west.  the Great Planes were made up of 10 states in the u.s.

The Mexican American war started in 1846 an ended in 1848.  The u.s. fought Mexico over Texas and California.  1,733 Americans died in the war.

Bison were Native Americans most important resource.  The bison provided food and clothes to the Native Americans.  when the Transcontinental Railroad was built most bison were killed off by pioneers.
