The Twelve Apostles

-Australia-

By Elena Caldarone, Elisa Nobile, Giorgia De Matteis and Matilde Maoli

The Twelve Apostles, stucks and stumps of sedimentary rock in the Pacific Ocean, are situated in the southern part of Australia, in particular in Port Campbell National Park in Victoria.Originally they were called "Sow and Piglets", but in 1922 it was decided to change the name in "The Twelve Apostles".

At the beginning these rocks were twelve, but now, in spite of the name, there are only 8 rocks, in particular one felt in the sea recently in 2005 in front of the tourists that were taking photos.

Port Campbell National Park was created in 1964 to protect the limestone formation. The fauna in the park is mainly ornithological: you can find southern emu, pelicans, peregrine falcons, swans, penguins and lots of other birds. You can also see in the park some land animals like swamp antechinuses and echidnas.

-Where and what-

These erosion didn't stop many years ago, but it continued and now waves and other atmospheric agents erode the rock about 2 cm per year.

The Twelve Apostles' formation began about 20 million years ago.

At the beginning, notch were formed by the erosion of waves and wind in the coast's rock. This process continued and notches became caves and arches.

Finally, when the vaults of arches fell in the water, they became  stacks (and some of them stumps), that is the actual form of the Twelve Apostles.
