Richard Austin Biography Born in London in 1765, Austin grew to be a moderately successful English punch cutter. He first studied wood engraving under Thomas Bewick. He began work at John Bell’s British Letter Foundry in 1788 and stayed there until the company closed in 1798. He then worked for Alexander Wilson and later William Miller. Eventually Austin founded his own type foundry: The Imperial Letter Foundry. He designed several fonts such as Tooled Roman, Bell, Fry’s Ornamented, Austin’s Pica No. 1, Porson, Scotch Roman, and Antique. 5

Bell MT Type History In 1788, John Bell commissioned Richard Austin to design a typeface inspired by Didot and Baskerville. The burst of popularity this typeface received was short lived in England and was only occasionally seen in America under the name of copperplate. In 1932, the Monotype Type Drawing Office restored the family. Since then, Bell has been most famously used by designer Jan Tschichold. This font’s classification is arguable, as it has been labeled both as a Late Transitional and an Early Modern typeface. Bell has been placed in the Scotch Roman class though, which is a family of popular fonts used mostly in America. Bell is an excellently rendered combination of the parent fonts as it retains Didot’s contrasting strokes and Baskerville’s rounded serifs. Bell could be labeled as a professionally quirky typeface, as it feels both ambitious and eccentric. Because of these characteristics, this font functions as an interesting text font and works well for larger uses like titles and headlines. 7
