Dr Christiaan Barnard demonstrating the first heart transplant at a press conference 50 years ago The world s first human to human heart transplant was performed by South African cardiac surgeon Christiaan Barnard utilizing the techniques developed by Norman Shumway and Richard Lower Barnard performed the first transplant on Louis Washkansky on December 3 1967 at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town South Africa Worldwide about 3 500 heart transplants are performed annually majority performed in the US 2 000 2 300 annually About 800 000 people have NYHA Class IV heart failure symptoms indicating advanced heart failure 400 1 time to switch to artificial pumps and stem cell therapy which could help thousands more people
Blood Bank Has New Testing Platforms LUMC s Blood Bank has switched testing platforms in both manual and automation testing using Vision instruments methods The manual method was converted from tube agglutination to Gel Card Column Agglutination GCTA The automated method was converted from Solid Phase to GCTA This conversion insures that whether technical staff perform the testing manually or by using an instrument the technology used will be the same nullifying any variations possible between technologies The GCTA method also provides a more consistent interpretation of the results eliminating the subjectivity of the interpretations notorious in the tube method The switch was made possible by the hard work and flexibility of the blood bank staff as a whole by their willingness to switch shifts come in early stay late or come in on a day off to help with training and to continue to provide top notch care to our patients Congratulations to all our dedicated Blood Bank staff for their hard work in adopting these new test methods

Keisha Bell Smith Keisha Bell Smith s first day as a Medical Laboratory Scientist for Core lab was Monday December 19 2017 Keisha is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago with a Bachelor s degree in Clinical Laboratory Science She also graduated from National Louis University with a Master s degree in Healthcare Administration Keisha is an ASCP certified Med Tech Keisha has worked as a Clinical Educator and later as Manager of Phlebotomy and Point of Care for Ann Robert H Lurie Children s Hospital Keisha also worked as a Senior Med Tech in Chemistry at the University of Chicago Medicine and as a Med Tech in Blood Bank for Northwestern Memorial Hospital Keisha and husband Corey have a two year old daughter Cadence Keisha loves playing and watching football She also loves working out and trying new things Please welcome Keisha to Loyola
