WINFREY'S L I F E
Oprah Winfrey is the daughter of a Mississippi Sharecropper and overcame poverty, parental neglect, sexual abuse, and racism to become one of the richest and most powerful women in the entertainment industry.
According to Winfrey, her father changed her life around by, "insisting that she be more than she was and by believing she could be more," and his love of learning "showed her the way." Winfrey soon became an honor student and started back public speaking engaging in standout orators. With her speaking skills, Oprah went to Tennesse State University where she majored in speech and drama
Winfrey started to act out at the age of 9 when she became vulnerable and started being molested by several different men including a teenage cousin and her mothers' boyfriend. Because her mother couldn't handle Oprah's misbehavior she sent Oprah to live with her father in Nashville.
While a sophomore, in 1973, the 19-year old Winfrey was offered a job as a co-news anchor at Nashville's CBS affiliate WTVF-TV and became Nashville's first female co-anchor and black co-anchor as well. Because Oprah was inspired by her success with this, she continued to Baltimore with WJZ-TV as co-anchor of the evening news and left college as a senior. She got fired from this job, not being able to keep the connection from personal stories.
In 1977, "People Are Talking" aired Oprah as the co-host and Winfrey had found her niche.Because of her uncommon ability to connect intellectually and emotionally with a wide variety of topics made the show a success.
She furthered her success in 1986 with the hit Harpo Productions Inc. and the went on to purchase a studio in Chicago where she took ownership and production of "The Oprah Winfrey Show". Thus made Oprah Winfrey the third woman in history to own and produce her own entertainment production company.
Oprah Winfrey's network created a place that people could come to to hear about new celebrities and what is going on with old celebrities while still learning about things that are happening in the world today. She created an atmosphere of laughs and jokes while still keeping an informational atmosphere.
