April 2018
Newsletter
During the month of April, credit unions across the country
celebrate Credit Union Youth Month. This year’s theme is “The
Science of Saving”. Understandably, saving money can sometimes
seem like a complicated formula. However, all of us at NorthStar
pride ourselves on serving as a resource for children and their
parents, to help nd the right mix for their nancial future. We
are proud to have cultivated memberships that span multiple
generations, and love to see parents and grandparents bring their
little ones in to join the NorthStar family. It’s never too early to start
saving!
NorthStar Credit Union provides many resources to help teach
young members about the importance of healthy personal nances.
One of the newest additions to our youth banking product suite
is Kick$tart Checking. Teens age 14 to 17 can learn the ropes
of “adulting” as it pertains to their money, while a joint parent or
guardian retains the ability to keep an eye on things and guide
them to make smart decisions. Much like all of our checking
accounts, Kick$tart has no minimum balance requirements and
includes issuance of a Visa ® debit card for convenient access.
NorthStar also pays $0.10 for each debit card purchase of $10 or
more to encourage saving. This account comes loaded with all of
the bells and whistles your teen needs to be a savvy saver, and
provides younger members a way to learn nancial responsibility
with built in safeguards.
For more information about youth banking options, contact
any member of our team or visit us online today! You can also
checkout our Learning Center online for helpful budgeting tools and
resources.

10 Ways To Get Your Home Ready For Spring!
* Limit 2 boxes of documents for shredding per guest; tube style televisions and/or
monitors cannot be accepted for recycling.
1. Clean Gutters
Grab a ladder, and check your gutters for debris.
Remove as much as you can with your hands (Don’t
forget to wear gloves!). Remove any leftover gunk
with a garden hose. Take off any nozzle and have a
helper turn on the water when you’re ready. Shove the
hose into the downspout to power out of gooseneck
bends. Make sure your downspouts channel water at
least ve feet from foundation walls.
2. Scrub Walls, Baseboards and Outlets
Scrub all the walls in the bathroom, kitchen,
bedrooms and living areas. Use a sponge or brush,
mild soap and water. This includes baseboards and
outlets. Make sure to completely dry outlet covers
before replacing.
3. Replace Filters
Replace all lters including water, range hood and air
vent lters. You should replace these lters every 3-6
months depending on the type of lter you have.
4. Clean Faucets and Showerheads
Unscrew the faucet aerators, sink sprayers and
showerheads. Soak them in equal parts vinegar and
water solution. Let them soak for an hour, then rinse
with warm water.
5. Clean Out the Dryer Vent
A clogged dryer vent can be a re hazard. To clean it,
disconnect the vent from the back of the machine and
use a dryer vent brush to remove lint. Outside your
house, remove the dryer vent cover and use the brush
to remove lint from the other end of the vent line.
Make sure the vent cover ap moves freely.
6. Wash Windows
Now is the time to let the sun in by cleaning the
windows inside and out.
7. Check Foundation Vents
A house with a crawl space has vents along the
foundation walls. The vents provide air circulation that
helps prevent excess moisture and mold growth. They
can also prevent critters from taking up residence
underneath your home. The screens collect leaves
and other debris from fall and winter. Spring is a great
time to clean them out and check for damage. Clean
the vents by hand or use a shop vacuum. Repair any
damaged screens.
8. Keep Allergens Away
Keep dust, mold and pollen at bay by decluttering
your home, checking pipes for leaks and keeping the
air clean.
9. Prep Your Garden
You can’t have a successful garden without good soil.
Follow these tips on how to prepare your soil to help
you grow a lush garden.
10. Test Smoke Alarms
Test smoke alarms and CO detectors, and change
out batteries as needed. It’s cheap, only takes a few
minutes and can save your family’s lives.

Teach Your Children How to Save
To help your children get into the savings habit, start by having them cut out pictures of something they’d like to
have someday and post the images where they’ll see them often. Then help them open a savings account at
NorthStar. You can open an account with as little as $5.00. Encourage your child to make regular small deposits
each week or month. If they keep this routine going, they’ll quickly see their savings grow.
This April, we’re celebrating Youth Month. We encourage you to bring your children into any of our branches to
open a youth account, enjoy fun activities, win prizes, and learn more about the Science of Saving.
