Atherton: Menlo Charity Horse Show runs Aug. 9-14

The lively spirit and energetic flare of Brazil will come
to Atherton this month at the Menlo Charity Horse
Show, which runs from Aug. 9 through 14 at the
Menlo Circus Club in Atherton.
Organizers say this year's theme is inspired by the
2016 summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The show,
which observes its 46th anniversary this year, will
feature 500 top-ranked horses from the U.S.
equestrian show circ
uit. Funds raised go to the Vista
Center for Blind & Visually Impaired.
Showtime is 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the
Circus Club, located at 190 Park Lane in Atherton.
Forty kiosks will sell clothing, art, jewelry, food and
stable items throughout the event.
On Monday, Aug. 8, Neiman Marcus at the Stanford
Shopping Center will host a kickoff party from 6 to 8
p.m. for committee members, exhibitors, tra
iners,
and friends of the show.
Tuesday and Wednesday will feature family fun with
pony classes and a "Pony Palooza."
One of the major events is Thursday evening's
$20,000 International Hunter Derby presented by Dr.
Daryl K Hoffman of Atherton.
On Friday evening, there is a gala dinner after the
$10,000 Ryman Speed Jumping Class presented by
Stephen Silver. The painting "Cloud Jumper" by Rick
Timmons will b
e auctioned at the gala. There will be
guest appearances from top U.S. Olympians. Tickets
for the gala are $250 each.
On Saturday is the $40,000 Grand Prix event,
sponsored by Bentley San Francisco and Bentley Los
Gatos.
Complimentary shuttle service will be available from a nearby parking area to the venue. Children under
12 and adults over 65 are admitted free. Tickets will be sold at the entry gate at
$10 per day or $35 for a
six-day pass.

ATHERTON — Preparations are being ramped up for the annual Menlo Charity Horse Show, which is set for
Aug. 9-14 at the Menlo Circus Club in Atherton.
The event, one of 21 United States Equestrian Foundation Heritage competitions, draws hundreds of horses
and riders and raises funds for the Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. There will be
luncheons, dinners, a gala dinner dance, a vendor
row and opportunities to donate.
The Circus Club began in 1920 when youngsters gathered to perform on ponies and show pet cats, goats an
d
dogs that had been trained to do stunts. That first event, held at an estate in Atherton, raised money for
Stanford Convalescent Home (now Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital).
In 1922, land was purchased for the development of Menlo Circus Club, which has since seen many horse
shows, polo matches, swimming events, tennis tournaments and galas.
This week, Rick Timmons of Dallas was named official arti
st of the 2016 show. One of his works, “Cloud
Jumper,” will be featured on the event’s merchandise and website. The original, valued at $6,400, will be
auctioned at the gala dinner.

Atherton, Calif. - One of the highlights of the Menlo Charity Horse Show is the USHJA International Hunter Derby Presented by Dr.
Daryl K. Hoffman,
this anxiously anticipated class on Thursday afternoon is steeped in tradition never ever disappoints.
“The Menlo Horse Show, in general, is a very special show, it’s unique event
held in the middle of a beautiful residential neighborhood. Menlo is a
gorgeous show, with great jumps and the crowd is always involved,” said
Nick Haness, the winner of back-to-back Derbies in 2014 and 2015. “There is
a cer
tain element of excitement to the show, and it’s always been a fun Derby
to participate in and to watch.”
As the excitement builds on the MCHS showgrounds and the VIP tent begins
to fill, the Grass Hunter Field is prepared for the late afternoon event.
“When the other classes are over and the volunteers are decorating the
jumps for the Derby. It looks like the Rose Parade is coming through the horse sh
ow.” laughed Nick. “The volunteers are out on the field;
placing flowers, and decorating with all sorts of materials, greenery, flowers and plants. It’s definitely a production. You can see the care
that goes into it, another element that makes the Derby extra special and fun to compete in and to watch.”
There are many differences between the MCHS Derby and other events on the circuit, as one of a ha
ndful of venues in California that
run Derbies on grass, the MCHS in Northern California is pretty special. When 4.30pm arrives all eyes were on the 20 horses competing
in the first of the two rounds.
“It’s a really inviting and pretty course, this venue is awesome and as you only show here once a year that makes it much more unique.
Often times many other Derbies get put to the end of the day or move
d to another ring and people aren’t always able to watch, this
event people want to see. There is obviously people here that are not horse people, they are here to watch pretty horses go round, you
get a lot of those people oohing and aahing from the sides, that’s always really fun.” said Nick.
Nick was especially looking forward to this year’s class, because for once he actually got to hang up his s
how clothes, grab a glass of
wine and sit and watch, no pressure. Nick not only was able to support his fellow competitors and friends, but he was also able to help
his student, Karina Sanchez on Way Out West. Karina is a big part of Nick’s business and her family owns multiple horses in
partnership with him. Riding in the class had been a goal and a dream for Karina, and she did an exceptional job,
just missing the cut off
in the first round, not bad at all for the first time in such a prestigious Derby.
The first round of the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby presented twenty wonderful Hunters. The top scores as they moved
into the Handy Round with a cut off score of 150 were as follows:
1. Tara Metzner and Cy Young 186
2. John French and Center Court 181
3. Hugh Mutch and Bunistar 179.5

As the twelve riders prepared to come back for the Handy round a very special event took place, a celebration of Widget and his
retirement from competitive life. Widget’s owner Lindsay Maxwell also announced a new trophy in Widget’s honor. The Widget Perpetual

When Lindsay Maxwell first moved to California, Archie Cox told her, “I know a horse who is a movie star…and you’ll be so grateful for
him.” The movie star was Widget. Like many things precious and rare, Widget never truly “belonged” to any one rider. He embodies the
spirit of California – ambitious, co
urageous, and bold. Widget retires from showing healthy, happy, and forever a champion in residence
at Brookway Stables.
Through the years, Widget enjoyed great success at the Menlo Charity Horse Show. A winner of countless championships, hunter prixs,
hunter classics, and medals, Widget also recently won top ribbons at the Devon Horse Show. In imitable Widget fashion, at his final
show in the amateur
owner hunter division, Widget won both the championship and classic.
Lindsay graciously provided a champagne toast for all in attendance in honor of Widget.
In preparation for Widget’s retirement Lindsay looked to Archie and her friends at Brookway Stables to suggest a suitable venue.
“I spoke with Archie about where we would do it and Archie said Menlo is such a special show with wonderful tradition and Widget has
won here so many times that I felt this would be a really special place to do it.” Lindsay explained.
“True to its reputation, the Show is proving to be a fast favorite of mine. Its history of excellence and charity is second to none – it is
such a wonderful asset to th
e community and I am humbled to share in its tradition.”
The Show also has an additional significance for Lindsay due its support of the Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. Lindsay
has close friends and family members who have been challenged by sight-related issues. Her charitable fund has a programmatic focus
on access for special needs and at-risk children, and the Vista Center’s wor
k in the Bay Area is an outstanding model for communities
nationwide that provide counseling, support, and life skills for the visually impaired.
Lindsay explained,” The volunteers who donate thousands upon thousands of hours to support the MCHS for the benefit of the Vista
Center personify the generous spirit that makes the equestrian community so wonderful. More than being a spectacularly beautiful
event, the spirit of the Show is made most manifest in the generosity of its volunteers.”
As Widget left the ring for the last time a beautiful garland around his neck, the final round of the Hunter Derby began.
As the shadows began to fall in the field the 12 leading horses completed the course in reverse order, a beautiful scene with the
exceptional fences and a course providing opportunity for all
to show the handiness of there horses.
At the end of the competition the same four hunters remained at the top of the field. The overall results:

John French who has been attending MCHS for almost 30 years was delighted with Center Court, and praised the work of the
volunteers who prepared the fences, many known to John; people he has trained with or used to train with, in his home town.
Talking about Center Court John explained, “I liked the fact that in the first round he was good, he was not quite awake at the beginning
of the course, but then all of a sudden of realized, we were jumping bigger jumps. He hasn’t been showing for a while so we have not
done muc
h with him. We showed him at HITS Thermal where he was circuit champion in the winter. He has had some time off now, so
we were debating wither to bring him here.” I just showed him in one class earlier in the week, he’s not afraid of anything. He seemed
like he was fine to me and I wanted to save him for this class today and not tire him out. The more impressive it is the better it is for him
that’s
why you save him. I like coming in second or third after the Classic round because there isn’t as much pressure on you going into
the Handy round when you have to move up. Center Court was super smooth in the Handy I think they rewarded him because he can
turn really tight to the jumps and does it effortlessly, he does it easily your not trying to create the jump or legging him to get him over he
ca
n do it in his sleep that’s how scopey he is. It’s so nice to be on the Grass Hunter Field, with a big crowd which great preparation for
Derby Finals. We were waiting to see how well he did here today and whether to send him back to Kentucky next week, you never
know, we just might go for it."
Center Court’s owner Kristen Hiller was also delighted with her seven-year-old horse in only his second Menl
o Derby outing “Last year
we just missed by a lead change, but this year he was awesome,” said Kristen “I live two blocks away, so Menlo is the horse show that I
grew up going to and was always hoping that I would have a champion like Billy (Billy the Kid aka Center Court) he’s made Menlo very
special very quickly.”

Those familiar with the Spanish language
will recognize the name Madera as a direct

have been found in a ranch house or old Spanish
mission. The food is sourced sustainably from
local farming communities and prepared with
such nesse, it’s no wonder Madera is one of the
best Palo Alto restaurants.
Stepping into Madera is stepping out of the
humdrum routine of everyday life. Leave the
hustle and bustle of San Francisco and Silicon
Valley behind as you sit in the chic dining room,

décor to become a natural, rened extension of
the gorgeous Santa Cruz Mountains outside.

Executive Chef Peter Rudolph is no stranger
to the area: He grew up in an East Bay town
near San Francisco. He got his start at learning
about local produce and cuisine by cooking
in his grandmother’s kitchen with the fresh
ingredients in her garden. After a shining career
climbing from the California Culinary Academy
to cooking for various Ritz-Carlton hotels, Chef
Rudolph is now able to more fully express his
Bay Area roots.
Madera’s cuisine pays homage to the rich
culinary heritage of the western United States,

avors enhanced by preparation on the wood-
re grill or rotisserie oven. Seafood is sustainably
harvested, meat is naturally raised and produce

Horse Show is not only one of the select USEF
Heritage Competitions but one that continues
to raise considerable funds for deserving
charities. Menlo is currently partnered with
Vista Center for the Blind and Visually
Impaired, and has already raised over $6 million
for the center.
Menlo attracts hundreds of top competitors,
and if that weren’t enough to rake in the
spectators, Menlo’s sunny California location

20 years, Suzanne Rischman knows the area

Suzanne began riding at 7 years old. “I’ve

After working up an appetite, the Menlo Park

Prestigious enough to be known simply as
“Menlo” in the horse world, the Menlo Charity
Horse Show is not only one of the select USEF
Heritage Competitions but one that continues
to raise considerable funds for deserving
charities. Menlo is currently partnered with
Vista Center for the Blind and Visually
Impaired, and has already raised over $6 million
for the center.
Menlo attracts hundreds of top competitors,
and if that weren’t enough to rake in the
spectators, Menlo’s sunny California location
makes it the perfect horse show getaway. Raised
in Santa Cruz and a San Francisco resident for
20 years, Suzanne Rischman knows the area
well.
Suzanne began riding at 7 years old. “I’ve
been showing on and o since then,” she said.
“I currently have a jumper that I show when
my work schedule allows — which is not much

being one of six co-chairs for Menlo, with which
she has been involved for over 20 years.
With horse show management, Suzanne
helps to run the show and all surrounding
events, including sponsor events and the Friday
night Gala Dinner Dance and Auction. As if
her familiarity with the area weren’t enough, her
inner knowledge of Menlo and horse experience
make her a prime travel guide accented for the
equestrian heart.

CHARITY HORSE SHOW

Members of the Menlo Charity Horse Show
Committee announced today that they have
unanimously selected Rick Timmons of Dallas,
Texas to be the2016 Official Artist of this
nationally recognized and honored equestrian
competition.
Mr. Timmons' work, entitled "Cloud Jumper" is
valued at $6,400 and will be auctioned off Friday
night, Au
gust 12th at the Gala Dinner (sponsored by
Stephen Silver Fine Jewelry) immediately following
the$10,000 Ryman Take Your Own Line Speed
Jumping Class at 6 PM that evening. Reproductions
of this artwork will be featured on the event's
stationery, posters, invitations, tee shirts, mugs and website.
Rick Timmons was born in Florida, but was raised in Dallas where he attended Junior High and High
School.
Prior to attending art school he spent 4years in the construction business traveling
throughout Europe, the Middle East, Canada, Mexico and all over the United States absorbing the
culture of the various regions.
In 1981, after completing his studies at the Art Institute of Dallas, Rick joined the Dallas Fire
Department where he would spend the next 13 years as a fire fighter/paramedic and member of
the
department's football, rodeo and powerlifting teams. Countless hours of his off-duty time were spent
in his studio honing his craft, and it wasn't long before his artwork was being displayed regionally in
numerous galleries which specialize in Southwestern Art. He was selected to produce commemorative
paintings for both the Texas and New York Firefighters' Associations.
In 1984 he made the dif
ficult decision to retire from the fire department in order to pursue painting,
his "ultimate passion" on a full time basis. He opened his first public studio in 1996. Since then, his oil
portraits and paintings have sold in the United States and Europe, and have beencollected by people
from every walk of life, including celebrities, media personalities, business executives, civic leaders and
profes
sional athletes.
Rick’s equine and sports art has been featured in publications such as Art News, Southwest Art
Magazine, and Equine Images, he continues to operate Loco Gringo Studios in Dallas. He will be in
attendance at the horse show's Gala Dinner on August 12th, and says, "I am really looking forward to
attending this unique, equestrian event, about which I've heard so much”.
The Menlo Charity
Horse Show is honored to be recognized by the USEF as one of only twenty one
Heritage Competitions, a designation reserved for competitions that have been established for a long
period of time and have made substantial contribution toward the development andpromotion of the
sport, both within the broader community, and by achieving, maintaining and promoting the
equestrian ideals of the sportsmanshi
p and competition.
The 2016 event will take place August 9th through August 14th at the Menlo Circus Club, 190 Park
Lane in Atherton. Over 500 horses and riders are expected to compete in three beautiful arenas, two
of which are on the grass of the polo field.

enthusiastic participation inhelping us cele

his week marked the kick-off of the 46th annual Menlo Charity Horse
S
how in Atherton, CA. And Hope Glynn and her daugher, Avery, made
s
ure that MCHS was on their show “bucket list” for the season. Due to the
d
ifficulties in scheduling the show season for themselves, but also for clients,
G
lynn hasn’t been to MCHS in a few years. The logistics of getting to the
U
SHJA International Hunter Derby Trials and Pre-Green Incentive
C
hampionship in Kentucky have resulted in missing out on this historic event
a
nd the only opportunity in Northern California to show on the grass. This
y
ear Hope and Avery made a special effort to make it to Menlo, albeit for a
s
hort two days. And the Mother/Daughter Duo had a lot of fun while also
b
ringing home the ribbons!

color of Brazil are blended to bring the “Road to Rio” alive in show rings August 9th-14th from 8:30 a.m. to
6:00 p.m. daily at 190 Park Lane in Atherton, California.
The prestigious Menlo Charity Horse Show has come a long way since its conception. Originating in 1970 as a
one-day unranked show featuring approximately forty riders; it would be difficult to imagine those humble roots
today. One area that has remained steadfast is the organization and dedication, mainly by volunteers, to produce
an unforgettab
le experience year-on-year. In fact, some of the handful of women who launched this show are still
active participants today as it continues to grow in popularity while still remaining true to its Peninsula roots.
Founder Betsy Glikbarg reflects, “…even in those initial days, when we doubted if we would be able to break
even financially, we were able to (thanks to the generosity of the community) raise
funds for the non-profit
agencies that benefited from our early efforts.”
The Menlo Charity Horse Show has evolved into a United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) “AA” rated
event with a steering committee of over one hundred volunteers and participants. For six days, Menlo becomes
the competition grounds for five hundred of the most accomplished and notable names on the U.S. equestrian
show circuit, w
hile simultaneously raising over 6 million dollars for Vista Center for the Blind & Visually
Impaired.
“Our horse show is one of the finest…” adds Glikbarg, “It is unique in that its origin and legacy is one of
philanthropy, encompassing both the elements of showmanship and giving back to the community.”
Menlo features all-day action Tuesday through Sunday with exceptional hunter and jumper competition
in three
separate arenas on the historic facility. The gorgeous clubhouse is open to the public and features an outdoor
patio and front-row seating to the jumper ring on the polo field. Vendor row neighboring the clubhouse includes
forty vendors selling clothing, jewelry, art, home and garden, and stable goods not found anywhere else. Food
and beverages from local Menlo Park favorites are available on
site as well.
On Tuesday and Wednesday young future equestrian stars go head-to-head in pony classes and close the
excitement with “Pony Palooza” offering special treats and entertainment for the whole family. On Tuesday
evening tradition continues with the exhibitors spaghetti dinner with live music. And Wednesday night brings the
Larry Mayfield Horse and Hound class.
The weekend’s must-see events inc
lude Saturday evening’s $40,000 Grand Prix sponsored by Bentley San
Francisco and Bentley Los Gatos and Thursday evening’s $20,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby presented
by Dr. Daryl K Hoffman of Atherton.
On Friday riding breeches are traded for the evening following the $10,000 Ryman Speed Jumping Class the
Gala dinner underwritten by Stephen Silver. The “Road to Rio” will be brought to life wit
h ornate décor and
lavish garments. Mr. Silver’s support, donations and gifts, as a longtime friend and Grand Prix Level sponsor, are
highly valued and appreciated, making the Gala a highlight of Menlo’s social calendar.
The Gala evening will include a live auction where the coveted item is a painting by 2016 official artist Rick
Timmons. “Cloud Jumper” is valued at $6,400 and is just one of the unique
works in his collection that has been
featured in numerous national publications.
Tickets for the Gala dinner are $250.00 each and available online at www.menlocharityhorseshow.org. Raffle
tickets are also available the week of the show.
The Menlo Charity Horse Show was recognized as a Top Ten Horse Show of 2015 by the National Show Hunter
Hall of Fame and provides exceptional family entertainment as i
t closes out summer on the Peninsula with the
excitement, beauty, and grace of the equestrian world in a stunning environment. There is ample parking with
complimentary shuttle service to and from the venue. Tax-deductible tickets, available at the Elena Avenue entry
