Hello, welcome to our Atlas of Ignis this is our alternate world continent. We will be showing our viewers the journey we had to take within our continent and how each of our settlements grew to cities. This was possible because of new resources, better technology and population growth. Please Enjoy!

Physical Topography Elevation Maps

On this map transportation and infrastructure is shown. The solid black lines were roads and they surround the main cities. The house graphics show living areas and where the most of them are in the city. The curly and swirly lines represent the boundaries between the cities. The less populated areas have less roads compared to the more populated areas.

Transportation and Infrastructure map

Language Diffusion

Land Use Map

The boundary disputes were over evenness of land, since no one ruled each other. The boundaries were then placed on rivers and natural obstacles. There is also land that is not settled, but there is a treaty keeping non-natives settling there.

Boundary Dispute

This map shows the amount of people in one area, the population density. The highest density of people are in the Central Business District (CBD). This shows the most people are in the city for jobs and a good place to live.

                                                          Settlement and Cultural Development

Located at 14° S and 65° W the settlement “Urbem in igne” meaning the city of fire is close to the mountains, has a large flowing through it, and has a hot climate. The river provides for a good source of water, food, and transportation. The river also provides fertile soil to grow crops. The people would eat mainly fish, deer, passion fruit, bananas, many exotic fruits, and even some insects. Clothing will be based off animals killed, such as skins, and not very much clothing is need in this wet and hot climate. The main dangers would be predators in the area, and shelter can be made out of branches and rocks. For recreation, citizens could go to the beach, climb trees, and explore the many species of exotic animals. Main things that would scare people in this settlement would be predators, such as the large amount of snakes and cheetahs. This place will have a very distinct culture with people wearing skins, protecting themselves from predators, and starting a new way of life. The mountains, river, fertile soil, and ocean nearby will be a great help to the way of life.

                                                Linguistic Development

Our root language for Ignis is originated from the mountains. Our root word for sun is “voi.” The root word for eat is “yeet”. The root for happy is dangi. The root word for animal is hirtha. The root word for mom is tapa. The root word for father or dad is tapo. The root word for danger is yeltig. In my region “g’s” made the “h” sound and “h” makes the “g” sound. In my region there is no word for cold, because the temperatures are temperate to hot all year long. My region and rigleys region used to be one with a same language, but the country split and a language divergence occured. The root family for all of the languages on the continent are the same. Sound shift occurs, and some letters make different sounds.

                                                               Religion Development

My religion is Blankism, it is Monotheistic, just like Christianity. My religion originated from one god named Blanka who promised to protect and feed his people, much like Judaism. The ultimate goal is to become pure enough to stand in the face of god, and look him in the eyes. In order to reach this goal you must make a pilgrimage once in your lifetime to the temple where Blanka was born. This is similar to Islam where they have to make a pilgrimage to Mecca once in their life. My religion believes in freedom of the spirit, and body, and therefore doesn't have any taboos. Blankism has a holy garden called the Ginja in the town where Blanka was born, people come here to worship often. The famous temple where the King gave birth to his son Blanka is sacred to the Blankist people. The holy book is called the Bola, and it was written by Blanka’s followers, much like Christianity. The hierarchy in Blankism is based off of how pure you are in the eyes of Blanka, which can be determined by a priest. The Blankist people do not have to wear any type of specific clothing except for at funerals, where they have to wear a toofa or “scarf of death” to keep them from infecting the dead person’s soul with their own impurities.

                                                          Demographic Transition- Stage 1

The life expectancy of Urbem in Ignis is 47 for men, and 50 for women. The reason is because of the newness of the settlement, and the settlement is struggling to find other settlements to trade with. There was a disease that significantly lowered the average life expectancy. There is no established hospital so many young women and children pass during or soon after birth. This lowers the life expectancy in a huge way. While mining for titanium the mine system fails on occasion causing the life expectancy to decrease even further.

The settlement-wide age of being an adult begins at age 22. This is just random but is accepting among most people in the society.

Titanium was found first in a mine in the middle of the city. Oil was found by a farmer who found a place to dig on his land, and became very successful. Uranium was found on the outskirts of the city by a government official. These three mines are the only places in the settlement where these things are found. Oil is used to fuel house items and appliances, titanium can be made into titanium dioxide and is used for brightness in paints, inks, and plastics. Uranium is used for colored glass and in some cases, armor for the army. The government does not distribute these elements equally. They give most uranium to the army, most titanium to big companies, and oil to citizens who pay the most. The government bought out the landowners of the mines where these things are found.

                                                             Industrialization

Urbem in Igne contains titanium, uranium, and oil. The region produces armor for the military with titanium, fuel with the oil, and nuclear weapons with uranium. Only the military armor is produced mechanically. The near villages provide natural gas and tin, in exchange for oil and very little titanium. The industrial belt is located on the north of my settlement, and the South of the neighboring settlements. This effects the stage of demographic transition by moving forward with a more stable birth and death rate. Because of the equal amount of trade and resources. This is in stage 3. Columbia, Mexico, Morocco, India, United Arab Emirates all show examples of a stage 3 demographic transition. Morocco is the most like me as in the earlier part of stage 3, just evening out the birth and death rates.

Morocco is like Urbem in Igne because of the stabilizing and new population. There are many more younger and middle aged people than the normal society. The characterization of industrial workers in this nation, is hard, self relying people trying to provide for their families. These people are much like the ones of current day Morocco. People are becoming more wealthy, and the lifestyle has changed in a way that now the richest are the “cooler ones.”

                                            Demographic Transition- Stage 4

The population pyramid for my world currently shows a TFR declining stage 4 population, also known as an “upside-down triangle.” The Government has newly started baby bonuses to get the population thriving again.

The total fertility rate is currently decreasing.  Birth rates are low because people are becoming more independent due to the focus on their jobs, and thus there is no interest to be in a relationship.  Also, the generation before did not have a large amount of babies as it is. Another reason there are less babies is because women are in the factories and offices and cannot take care of a child all day. Most people die of age or other natural causes since the population is mostly older and there are no major diseases or famine. Both women and men can get the same job, and there is no longer separation of jobs for certain sexes. Sometimes the women have to work around a tough work schedule to be able to check on small children.

The information in the pie charts above explains why more people are living closer together since their work is mostly “services for others”.   Therefore you can see on the population map that people are living in smaller cities instead of one large city (less industrialized).  The people in sector 1 is transitioning to an advanced civilization.  The people in sector 2 are advanced as well, but still a little bit behind the largest city.

With new urbanizations, there is now more housing for independent living workers, and more housing for commuters and middle class residents. The city has spread out and the population is more dispersed.  The CBD is still growing quite a bit, and thus many more suburbs have popped up since it is able to sustain more population.

.The main cities are de-industrializing, while the newer cities are still in agriculture and a small amount of industrialization. Technopoles are nodes of high-technology research and activity usually located near major transportation arteries (definition from the book). Technopoles in Urbem in Igne are located near the train stations and airports within main cities in order to synergize with other companies and sell their products. Urbem in Igne is involved in supranational organizations such as the United Nations (to allow sector 1 and 2 to work together and also with other civilizations), the Food and Agriculture Organization (to protect new agricultural areas in the new small cities), the European Coal and Steel Community (to protect natural resources due to industrialization in the past), and a newly formed Service Industry Union (to protect the rights of the workers in the service industry).

The settlement on the map is Urbem in Igne. This map show the build of the city, and where things are placed. The Central Business District (CBD) is in the middle, and is the center of attention.

Von Thunen Model

This is the concentric zone model in which Urbem in Igne follow. The ranching and commuter zone on the outside and the main city on the inner part of the city. The middle class and working class live just outside the CBD.

Settlement and Cultural Development

My settlement is named “aestus” which means heat in latin. I decided on this name because my settlement is located close to the Ring of Fire. Also my settlements absolute location is 120 degrees west and 45 degrees north.

The physical characteristics of my settlement contains volcanoes, a bay and is also located near a river. I chose this area because I have a fresh water source which provides a source of food and the volcanoes and higher elevation north of my settlement provide protection from harmful winds. The nature that my settlement is in provides many food options. The river to the north provides a wide variety of fish that can be used for energy. Also deer and moose provide meat and clothing as well. Our people will not need too much clothing because the climate at my settlement ranges from 70’s to low 80’s. However during the winter the temperature drops to high 30’s and low 40’s which requires clothing for warmth. The people who live on my settlement can make shelter using a wide variety of trees located in and near our settlement. They will need shelter for protection against weather like rain or strong winds. But more importantly against wolves or black bears. Around my settlement there are many trees for climbing and rivers for swimming which can provide a fun time for families. The only thing that would scare people at our settlement would be the harmful animals and the occasional bad weather.

To conclude, my settlement provides well rounded areas that provide the necessary needs for people to survive including shelter, food and water. Our settlement  will have protection from harmful weather  using the higher elevation and volcanoes. Also my settlement has a river for a water source and food source as well.

Week Three Reflection

On Ignes our root language originated in the mountains.  On our continent we have many root words but here are some of them. The root word for sun on our continent is voi. Next, our root word for eat is yeet. Then, the root word for happy is dangi. Now the root word for mom is tapa and the root word for father is tapo. Then, the root word for danger is yeltig. Lastly, the root word for animal is hirtha. In my region the I is silent for each word. Also, each A is elongated in each word. My region is isolated so it has a different language family compared to the other regions on our continent. On our settlement each of our separate regions use the same language, but we all have different ways of pronunciation and talking. All of our languages came from the starting language on our continent, but each region's language is changing little by little. Some of the words on my settlement have uniqueness because they show my location of my settlement. This includes voltic which means volcanoes. My settlement is close to the ring of fire. Next, nerfa which means north because my settlement is located on the northern edge of our continent. Next, ribera which means river because my settlement is located close to a river. Then, baeua which means bay because my settlement is located by a bay. Lastly, notga which means bear because bears are the most common animal found near my settlement and that is what our people rely on. There are changes in the way our people speak because they elongate there A’s and also the I is silent in our language. My settlement mimics the real world because in Latin people pronounce v’s as a w sound and at our settlement I’s are silent.

Alternate World Week Religion and Philosophy

The religion I have chosen is named Quercusism. First, this religion is animistic just like the Shinto religion. This religion originated in Australia when a man by the name of Sinh Tzu came across what they called the “holy oak”.  This oak tree is always located on a holy stream. This oak tree is constantly worshiped by Tzu and he has spread the idea of the “holy oak” to many others. The ultimate goal of our religion is to spread kindness, giving and compassion. The rules of our religion are fasting once a month. Also a weekly donation toward the poor. Lastly prayer three times a day. In our religion there are no taboos we try to spread the religion as much as possible. On the religious oak tree there are always a wooden circle carved into the tree to show the never ending cycle of love, giving and compassion. There is a holy book called the Oakah and was written by Sinh Tzu’s followers. This religion is free there is no hierarchy system besides the ruling of Sinh Tzu. The clothing requirements for our religion is lenient and allows for most clothing besides every thursday you are required to wear a white shirt with a circle stitched in the middle.

Alternate World Week 5 Reflection

On the continent Ignis, a village named Aestus is present. In the village Aestus, the average life expectancy is about 65 years. The reason the life expectancy is not very high is because the village has not been around for a long time so the people are still figuring out the best way to maintain life. Once a child is born they are constantly taught and trained to become an adult at the age of 15. Once at the age of 15, many new opportunities open up including jobs.

The government in Aestus is a dictatorship. This was decided because decisions would be made easier If one person could be the deciding factor. The adult responsibilities as a citizen include paying a tax every thursday to help support the village. Another responsibility includes going to work for at least 5 days out of the week unless there is a circumstance the prevents that. Some of the first resources discovered on Aestus are tin, uranium, and iron ore. At first tin was discovered when people began mining and began to find this resource. As tin was being quickly discovered people wanted to find more resources. Mining continued and iron ore was found. People began using this iron ore to create steel that would eventually help build buildings in Aestus. Lastly uranium was discovered after tin and iron ore were found when a group of miners stumbled across the curious looking rock. The resourced are all located in the ground on the southern part of Aestus. As more mining continued the began to be found in the eastern and northern parts of Aestus as well. The resource tin is used as a coating for other metals, the resource iron ore is used to make steel to allow for tools to be made along with supports for buildings and weapons. Iron ore and uranium however are able to be major parts in the making of a nuclear weapon which is important as well.

In the dictatorship on Aestus the people do not have a say in the decisions made on the dictator does. This allows for no arguing about what decisions should be made for the village. The outpost for Aestus in located on the southern part of the village because the neighboring villages are closest to that location. The village is set up like a cluster village so communication can be close. The government in very involved in the development of an outpost because the dictator decided the it would be located. Same thing with the discovery of resources because the dictator decides where to mine and try to find these resources.

Week 7 Reflection

In the city Aestus on the continent Ignis there is a stage four pyramid that shows low birth rate and high life expectancy. Aestus is in stage four of demographic transition because better living conditions and better technology has allowed for a higher life expectancy and abundance of elderly people.Pyramid Creation (Friday April 21, 2017 8:16 AM, CDT)

Within the city Aestus the TFR is to decrease the birthrate in the city. The  main cause of death on Aestus is of old age or “natural causes.” Men and women are allowed in the workplace, mainly men have jobs in factories, construction and more labor intensive jobs. While women on the other hand take care of children and help with the teaching in schools. It is possible for women to have children and progress in their careers because the city provides childcare options.

According to the pie charts most people within the city work in a service industry. While little work in agriculture and about a ¼ of the population work in Industrial services. The impact in the city affect the population density by having more people live in the core of the city making it more dense and then less people living in the rural areas outside of the city making it less dense. Pie Charts (Tuesday April 25, 2017 9:36 AM, CDT)Pie Charts (Tuesday April 18, 2017 7:35 AM, CDT)

              (Pie Charts)

New urbanization affects the city positively because it allows for more people to work together and grow as a community. The look of the city is larger and more modern. Areas that are de-industrializing are the outer areas and more rural areas because more of the focus is on the inner city. The city is working from the inner city outward. A technopole is a center of high manufacturing. On Aestus the technopoles are located within the city close to the center for a better distribution of goods. Aestus is involved in the United Nations supranational funds as an alliance to work together and trade. Pie Charts (Tuesday April 25, 2017 9:35 AM, CDT)

In the population map the densely dotted region shows where the more populated areas are on the continent. The less, more scattered dotted areas show how the edges are less dense than the center of the city.

Week 6 Reflection

As Aestus is industrializing many resources are created. There are multiple products Aestus can create with the resources provided within the region. First, Our village will be able to make steel with the iron resource because steel is made up of about 98% iron. This will be helpful in the production of houses, buildings, and daily necessities. Next, with tin many utensils are able to be made which can be very important for daily activities like cooking, eating, collecting resources like water as well. Lastly, Uranium can be a very important factor at Aestus. Nuclear weapons can be made from uranium. Which can be a factor in protection and defense against other countries. The iron into steel production and uranium production is mechanized. On Aestus agglomeration will be used with other villages on the continent Ignis. Trade will be used in the iron industry. The industrial belt is located within the settlement and on the southern part as well because that is closest to the neighboring settlements. This has made Aestus in stage three of the demographic transition model. Because as our settlement becomes more industrialized the life expectancy will increase because as more products are made to help life become easier the quality of life will become better. There are multiple real world places located in the same stage of demographic transition. There are India, Mexico, Jamaica, Kenya and South Africa are five countries In stage three of demographic transition. Jamaica is mostly related to my settlement. Jamaica is similar to Aestus because the birthrate is very high and young adult is high as well but as age becomes older there are little people with a older age in that country as well.

                 Settlement and Cultural Development

The name of my settlement is Ignis Mare, which means sea of fire in latin. This name represents my settlement well because the ring of fire is located along the bank of the settlement. The absolute location of my settlement is 60* N and 30* W on the coast of our continent. My settlement is located on the coast of our continent, in between two rivers, and on top of a hill. The land is fairly hilly, but flat enough for settlement. There is a beach on the coast which is good for fishing and trade. The situation in between rivers is vital as a food source, power source, transportation, and a means of trade. This settlement is similar to Mesopotamia, which is located between the Tigris, and Euphrates.

The food that nature provides for the people of my settlement is primarily fish and grains, due to the proximity of the rivers and beach. People can use animal pelts from the animals that come to drink from the rivers for clothing. The climate is fairly temperate, so the people will wear a medium amount of clothing. People can use the reeds from the river, and palm leaves from the trees to make a shelter. The people will need shelter for protection from animals, and weather. People can swim in the ocean, or play on the beach for recreation. The people of my settlement should be worried about the volcanoes near the settlement. The place of my settlement unique and great for settlement because of its location on a hill, which makes it easy to defend, and its location in between two rivers. Overall, my settlement is a great place to start a colony.

             Reflection Week 3

The root language for Ignes would have originated in the mountains. The mountains are the hearth of my language. My language would spread throughout the continent through language divergence. This would cause a change in dialect, with time and distance.

Some of my languages unique words can be traced back to the root family of the word using backward reconstruction. Here are some of the root words of my language: sun is voi, eat is yeet, happy is dangi, dad is tapo, animal is hirtha, danger is yeltig. In my language, the “y” sound is pronounced like a “v”sound, and the consonants sound slightly softer. My region is Isolated, so it has its separate language family from the other settlements on my continent.

My settlements language has many unique features due to its geography and dialect. Some unique words that my settlement has are: yulya for volcano, pigna for island, cuya for beach, and yelkis for sand. My language has a major sound shift. The sound shift is the rate, it is significantly faster than the the root language.

The development of my language mimics the development of many other languages. It has root words, a language hearth, unique dialect, and many other things. It also has root families, like Nostratic for proto-indo-European. The development of my language is also unique because of the geography. This makes my settlements language have words that some other regions wouldn't have words for. My language is unique and has commonalities with other languages as well.

                     ALTERNATE WORLD WEEK 4

                                                       By; Tyler Wolff p5

Alternate World Week 5 / Tyler Wolff p.5

The settlement Ignis Mare is a settlement that is located near the ocean, in an area that is surrounded by volcanoes. This, along with many other factors, has an effect on the settlements life expectancy, which is 34 years old. The settlement is very religious and has a policy a tradition that a boy becomes a man at 16 years of age, and then is allowed to separate from his parents and start a life of his own. For women, the age of adulthood is 13 years old, which may seem young, but was considered normal in Ignis Mare. The settlers have a ceremony in which all of the new adults have to stay up for four nights in a row, and party the whole time.

The settlement Ignis Mare is a Monarchy. The monarchy in Ignis Mare is not very complex yet, but still, has one ruler who has Limited power. The citizens in the monarchy are not required to make any decisions in the government. The citizens are only required to do manual labor, produce food, and trade goods, etc…

My settlement has many valuable resources, they include Gold, oil, and Aluminum. The resources on my continent were discovered when the king ordered people to drill for oil, and they eventually found it. The people found gold, along with aluminum, when they were drilling a mine down on the Western side of my continent. The Oil is mostly located on the southern side of my continent, but there is some in other areas too. The Gold in Ignis Mare is mainly traded to other settlements, as a source of income. The Oil is also a big source of income, and the aluminum is used to manufacture goods. The government in Ignis Mare ultimately decides everything that happens to all the resources in the settlement.

WEEK 6 REFLECTION

Reflection

The region is now industrializing, and I now have a mechanized industry to produce or refine something. My region could use the oil to make gas for cars, or I could trade with other settlements around me for the gold that I have, and get many valuable things such as Uranium. I could then use this to create nuclear weapons. The production of gas to be used in automobiles is mechanized in my region. The industrial belt in my region would be located along the coast of my settlement. This has impacted my region’s demographic transition because industrialization has caused my death rate to decline, and my birth rate to decline as well, this is known as stage three of the demographic transition model. Some other countries in the real world who are in stage three of the Demographic transition are Colombia, India, Jamaica, Kenya, and Mexico. The Place that that is most similar to mine is Mexico. This is because they are also in stage three, and the region also has a low population of men in their around their 20’s. Above is a population pyramid of Mexico. This shows that they have a pretty high rate of people in the age group of ages 0-4. You can also see that the male population in their adult ages are less than the female population. This is due to the Violence and drugs in the area. This pyramid is very similar to the one that my region would have, except it only has a smaller population. My population also has a smaller population of people in the ages of 80-85.

The industrial workers are all people who are not very wealthy. They’re often people who are desperate and will do anything to earn some money. The people who would work in the factories would be the people who are living in the slums but are not involved in any agriculture because they are necessary for the economy. The social life changed, but not dramatically. The citizens became less friendly because they had to work long hours during the night in the factories.

People also were less focused and more tired during the day. This is also similar with Ignis Mare, but the citizens are given breaks so they can get some rest.

The population pyramid is in the shape of a column. It shows that the percentage of the population is fairly even throughout all of the ages, with only some minor fluctuations. The lowest of the percentage of the population is in the age of around 70 years. The birth rates in Ignis Mare are fairly low. The TFR is to sustain, because i have a low death rate, and birth rate because I am in stage four, and my country is well developed. People in the country mostly die from things such as cancer and diseases such as malaria due to me being located close to the equator. Women in Ignis Mare are very present in the workplace, and share jobs with men just like the US. Whenever women have children they are on a paid leave for 7 months, and then are given the choice if they want to come back. They usually don’t come back because they become so attached to their children.

The pie charts above impact my population density greatly. The largest percentage of the workforce is in industry. This results in most of my population being located towards the middle of the country. There is also a large amount of people in services. Therefore a lot of people live near the bay, where there is tourism and other people that need services.File_000.jpeg

Due to the new urbanization Ignis mare is starting to look more developed. It is starting to have skyscrapers built, along with new, trendy stores. Some of the areas near the coast which are popular with tourists are starting to deindustrialize because the buildings look ugly, and they need to make more space for other buildings. The upper region of Ignis Mare near the beach is a technopole. A technopole is a center of high tech manufacturing, similar to southern california. We are involved in a supranational organization that is similar to the Red Cross, and helps countries all over the world when they experience a tragedy.
