Healthiest Drinks VS Unhealthiest Drinks at Starbucks

By Caleb Janzen

Carbohydrates:

On average, a person's diet should be 55% carbohydrates. If you have too little of carbohydrates, your energy will drain and drag you down. On the other hand, eating too much causes a lot of weight gain. Eating the right amount of carbohydrates will keep your energy at a good amount and leave your body feeling good. An interesting fact about carbohydrates is that each gram contains 4 calories.

We require food to accomplish three things, providing fuel for our body to accomplish daily activities, providing the needed materials for building body tissue and organs, providing the substances needed for body functioning. Nutrients are what keep our bodies to do all of these things efficiently. Carbohydrates, Fats, Proteins, Vitamins, Minerals and Water are the six classes of Nutrients.

First, What are Nutrients?

Fats:

You need your diet to include 30% of fats each day. Consuming too many fats can cause much weight gain which gives more stress to your heart. Eating too little of fats can causes more weight loss and increases stress, anxiety and lower self esteem. Eating the right amount is good, but depending on the person is what and even out their diet with that fat. Something interesting about fat is that 15-30% of most people's bodies is fat.

Protein:

A healthy diet should contain around 15% of protein. With too little protein in one's diet leads to tissue loss, especially a loss of protein-rich muscle tissue. On the counter side, having too much protein could lead to removing more nitrogen waste products from the blood and stress your kidneys. Having just enough protein in your diet helps with building muscles, immunity, healthy hair, skin and nails, etc. An interesting fact is that our immune system is most made up of protein.

Iced Green Tea Unsweetened

A serving size for the Caffe Misto drink is 12 oz (tall). It is a better choice as a drink because it's low in calories and contains proteins. It may be somewhat unhealthy because it contains some of the bad fats. The 115 mg of caffeine effects how someone's brain works throughout the day and may mix poorly with some medications. I definitely fits in some nutrient categories like carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The Caffe Misto is $3.45 for a tall.

One serving of the Iced Green Tea is 16 oz (grande). It's a better choice compared to some drinks because 0 calories come from fat, which means there's no "bad fats" in the drink. No ingredients are bad but there is hardly any nutrients in it. There's no proteins, vitamins or calcium, which makes it not a nutrient drink. The Iced Green Tea costs $2.25 for the grande.

Caffe Misto

The Cool Lime Refresher drink from Starbucks may be another good choice. One serving of the drink is 16 oz (grande). Other drinks may look unhealthy compared to this drink because it's only 60 calories. The ingredients may seem bad because there is no proteins. The sodium in this drink isn't amazing either. Sodium can lead to high blood pressure and kidney problems. The only way this drink really fits into the nutrient categories is with carbohydrates. A grande drink of Cool Lime Refresher is $3.45.

The Cinnamon Roll Frappuccino Blended Coffee is one the unhealthy drinks at Starbucks. One serving is 16 oz (grande) and contains 510 calories! It's a bad choice compared to some because it's so high in sodium, containing 280 mg. The sodium and cholesterol is the bad ingredients in the drink because they can cause arteries to close and higher the blood pressure. Although there is bad ingredients, the drink falls into the nutrients category because it have some protein in it. One serving of the Cinnamon Roll Frappuccino Blended Coffee costs $4.25.

The Red Velvet Cake Creme Frappuccino Blended Creme drink from Starbucks may be a pretty bad choice as well. Again, one serving for this drink is 16 oz, also known as a grande, and is made up of 480 calories. This drink barely fits into the nutrients categories with 5 grams of protein. The drink itself cost $4.15, but is a worse choice because of the low caffeine. If you're buying coffee, it should be to be more alert and awake. This drink only contains 15 mg of caffeine, which isn't much at all, so you'd just be drinking an unhealthy drink for no reason.

The Caffe Vanilla Frappuccino Blended Coffee drink at Starbucks is yet another unhealthy choice due to the 390 calories it contains. The Cafe Americano from Starbucks is a much better choice because you'd only consume 15 calories from drinking it. One serving is a grande (16 oz). A bad ingredient is sodium, which highers the risk of heart failure. I fits into the nutrients categories with protein and carbohydrates, low in both. If you have $4.15, go pick up this healthy drink!

Caramel Frappuccino (Light)

This delicious Caramel Light Frappuccino drink from Starbucks is $4.45 for the grande, which is one serving. It fits into the nutrients categories with 30 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of protein. This drink may be better than some because there's only 140 calories, which seems like nothing compared to the 400 calories in some other drinks. It may be considered bad for you because of the lack of protein, but the Caramel Frappuccino Light has 0 of the bad fats!

Cafe Americano

The Shaken Sweet Tea from Starbucks is another good choice if you're trying to stay healthy. It's a better choice due to it only serving 100 calories in a 16 oz drink. With no bad fats in this drink, our bodies will feel fresh and healthy. The sodium may be somewhat bad though. The Shaken Sweet Tea doesn't fit very well into the nutrients categories, only with its 26 grams of carbohydrates. 16 oz of this yummy drink is $2.25.

Caramel Cocoa Cluster Frappuccino Blended Coffee

Think again if you are considering buying the Java Chip Frappuccino Blended Coffee from Starbucks. One of the only good qualities of this drink is the 6 grams of protein. The drink is very bad with it's cholesterol. Cholesterol can block arteries and lead to strokes. One serving is 16 oz and costs $4.95.

"Unhealthy" Starbucks Drinks

The Caramel Cocoa Cluster Frappuccino Blended Coffee from Starbucks may be a terrible choice because it contains 300 mg of sodium! Too much sodium can lead to stomach cancer, and 300 mg is definitely too much. The 450 calories isn't very attractive on the drink either. I does though fit into the nutrients categories with 4 grams of protein. One serving of the Caramel Cocoa Cluster Frappuccino Blended Coffee is 16 oz and costs $4.95. Is it really worth it?

Cotton Candy Creme Frappuccino Blended Creme

The Cotton Candy Creme Frappuccino Blended Creme drink from Starbucks is another outrageous choice. This drink contains no caffeine, which is good because caffeine can lead some into insomnia. On the contrary, the drink contains 250 mg of sodium. The 68 grams of carbohydrates and 5 grams of protein is how it stays in the nutrients groups. If you want to pick up a 16 oz grande of this drink for $3.95, I suggest you look for better options.

The Strawberry Smoothie from Starbucks may be an okay choice every once in a while. Be cautious because the drink contains 300 calories for 16 oz. But it is still an okay choice because it has 16 grams of protein, which fits into the nutrients categories well. But it also contains sodium, which increases the risk of strokes. The Strawberry Smoothie from Starbucks costs $4.45.

"Healthy" Starbucks Drinks

The Nonfat Iced Vanilla Latte from Starbucks may be a bit of a better choice compared to the Strawberry Smoothie. It's lower than the smoothie in protein but still contains 7 grams of it, putting the drink into the nutrient categories. This drink is a better choice because of it not containing any bad fats. One serving (16 oz) costs $3.65. The sodium in this drink is unhealthy because it can lead to kidney failure.

The sodium goes up to 250 mg, which can lead many to a stroke if consuming too much. $4.95 is what the serving costs (16 fl oz). It barely fits into the nutrients categories with 5 grams of protein. Think twice before ordering drink like the White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino Blended Coffee.

Shaken Tazo Black Tea Lemonade

The next drink is the Shaken Tazo Black Tea Lemonade, which is a better choice because the tasty drink is only 90 calories. The serving size is a grande (16 oz) and costs $2.95. On the down side, it only fits into the nutrient categories with 23 grams of carbohydrates. None of the ingredients are necessarily bad, except the tiny bit of sodium that it contains. Too much of the sodium can lead to kidney issues. The Shaken Tazo Black Tea Lemonade would be a pretty good and healthy drink.

"Healthy" Starbucks Drinks

The Skinny Vanilla Latte from Starbucks may be an okay choice of a drink if you're trying to stay healthy. The drink could be a better choice because it's only 80 calories but it also had 105 grams of sodium. Too much sodium in your diet can increase the chances of osteoporosis.
