GENERAL APPEARANCE Boys cut neatly and above collar clean shaven gel is permitted Girls neat and tied back if long enough DIAribbons slides Alice bands hair bands must be navy blue General streaked nail polish is not allowed make up is not permitted no exotic hairstyles dyed bleached shaven or highlighted hair fringes should not cover the eyebrows no fashion accessories nails must short and cannot be seen over the jewellery of any kind is not permitted GENERAL BEHAVIOUR Learners are expected to Behave in a courteous considerate and assistive manner towards each other staff members and to visitors of the school Carry out instructions given by staff members and RCL members Stand when speaking to an adult or when an educator enters a classroom and greet the educator in the beginning of the lesson and wait to be dismissed Make way for educators and other adults in crowded corridors and stairs Set a good example with regard to appearance and behaviour guard against the saying and doing of anything that will discredit themselves or the school Behave in a manner that does not cause physical or emotional harm but where teaching and learning can take place effectively What is a friend I will tell you it is someone with whom you dare to be yourself
CELL PHONE POLICY Learners who travel to and from school carrying or using their cell phones are targeted and can result in theft Learners are careless and tend to leave it in their jackets and bags that are left unattended Cell phones can be used in the cheating of examinations and tests therefore cell phones are not permitted in the examination room Cell phones are multi functional which have different features that can distract a learner from his her work Cell phones provide unlimited access to salacious and ageinappropriate material which may also result in approaches by undesirable individuals which further results in the accessibility of personal material and information The school is not held responsible for the theft loss of cell phones under any circumstances If brought to school it must be turned OFF while the learner is on school premises Cell phones will be if First offence given 5 school days Second offence given 10 school days Third offence given Parents are required to come to school and will be taken away by the parents Urgent calls will therefore be made with the school phone and the learner will have to pay for the call The price will be determined from time to time No matter who broke your heart or how long it takes to heal you will never get through it without your friends
MERITS AND DEMERITS The Merit Demerit system is a guide to discipline for Grade 4 to Grade 12 learners at Amity International School The positive side of discipline is stressed and the administration expects learners at Amity International School to be well disciplined and maintain a high standard of behavior at all times Failure to comply with the codes and regulations will result in the issuing of demerits or other disciplinary actions The goal of any outside disciplinary action is to bring about self discipline PREAMBLE In addition to being subject to all the provisions of the Bill of Rights independent schools are affected by the provisions of the South African Schools Act No 84 of 1996 as amended While this statute per of school in S1 it does cover all schools in South Africa see is clear that most sections of the Schools Act are not intended to regulate the activities of independent schools The only exception to this exclusion are chapter 3 Independent Schools S45 to S50 Section 53 Transition provisions and Chapter 7 General Provisions S58 to S64 which are applicable to independent schools The Schools Acts Section 8 Code of Conduct for learners 9 Suspension and expulsion from public school and 10 Prohibition of corporal punishment are not technically applicable to learners registered at independent schools Amity International does however meet all the provisions of good practice through its own learner discipline policies and procedures enjoyment of similarities
1 EXCLUSION ON GROUNDS OF CONTRAVENTION OF THE RULES DISCIPLINARY SUSPENSION The disciplinary Council panel manages this process An Independent school has the right to exclude suspend or expel learners who are in contravention of the rules as long as the school adheres to the principle of procedurally fair practice of or conduct which it does DEMERIT CODE In the intermediate senior phase and FET phase of the school we have implemented a demerit system of discipline A student will receive a demerit for any disrespectful rebellious or disruptive behaviour If a learner receives a demerit the form educator will document the incident Demerits are not a punishment They serve as a record of the learner s conduct and as a communication tool to parents that their help is required to correct the behaviour of the learner Learners will be given a varying number of demerits depending upon the type and severity of the infraction Demerits may also be assigned at the discretion of the administration in certain irregular cases not covered by the list Note Learners begin with 100 merit points at the beginning of the year The total number of demerits will cancel the exact same number of merits Learners will have to strive to maintain a 100 merits for as long as they can True learning comes from understanding one s responsibility to oneself and to the community Therefore learners who violate our community s Code of Conduct will often face a restorative consequence an opportunity to give back to the community This practice of honouring the
community and the relationships within our community is the foundation of our program and our Code A learner who has accrued 20 demerits will receive a letter notifying parents guardians A copy will be in the learner s personal by the administrative assistant After accruing 20 demerits the learner will have to attend Detention held on a Friday between 13 30 15 30 It remains the learner s responsibility to arrive on time for detention not that of the school A learner who continually transgresses the rules of the school will have to present himself at a Disciplinary Hearing with the School Principal and the Head of Discipline The decision for school suspension and expulsion lies with the Principal and Head of Discipline An intervention committee for a possible suspension expulsion will be constituted as follows The Principal and Head of Discipline A relevant member of staff The learner and his her parents guardians will be in writing regarding the reason s of the intervention meeting 7 days in advance by the Head of Discipline The learner has the right to question any witness present at the hearing and has the right to speak and produce witnesses on his her own behalf Educator narratives grades attendance and disciplinary records will be available for review sculptor
