Carbohydrates

  1. Carbohydrates is the main source of energy for body functioning and muscle activity
  2. Carbohydrates provides your body with energy
  3. When you eat carbohydrates, your body responds by breaking them into simple sugars called glucose.
  4. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that carbohydrates make up 45 to 65 percent of your total daily calories.
  5. Carbohydrates can be found in fruits, vegetables, grains, breads, and sugar-foods.  

 

Proteins

  1. Proteins are the main building material for blood, skin, hair, nails, organs, muscles
  2. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals.
  3.   It is commonly believed that a high protein intake can contribute to osteoporosis.
  4. This amounts to: 56 grams per day for the average sedentary man. 46 grams per day for the average sedentary woman.
  5. The word protein is derived from the Greek word proteios which means primary or in the lead.

Fat

  1. Polyunsaturated and monounsatured are considered good fats, saturated fat is considered bad fat.
  2. Dietary fats are essential to give your body energy and to support cell growth.
  3. Too many fats can lead to obesity
  4. The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends keeping saturated fat to less than 10 percent of calories a day.
  5. Saturated fat is also found in tropical oils, like palm kernel or coconut oil.  

Vitamins

  1. any of a group of organic compounds that are essential for normal growth and nutrition
  2.  They help shore up bones, heal wounds, and bolster your immune system.
  3. If you take too many  adverse reactions like diarrhea, stomach cramps, and nausea can occur
  4.  Recommended Dietary Allowances, or RDAs, represent the average daily dietary intake of each vitamin and mineral a person needs to stay healthy and steer clear of deficiencies.
  5. You get vitamins through diet and sunlight.

Water

  1. a colorless, transparent, odorless, tasteless liquid

Minerals

  2. Just like vitamins, minerals help your body grow, develop, and stay healthy.
  3. if you get too much of any one mineral, supplements can be dangerous. For this reason, it is important to discuss any mineral supplements you are considering with your doctor.
  4. Most adults need about 1,000 milligrams of calcium per day, but only about 10 to 15 milligrams of iron and zinc per day
  5. Certain minerals are needed by our bodies so we can grow healthy and strong.
