OUR MISSION IT S AN AUTUMN AFFAIR Boys Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain hosted an Autumn Affair To enable all young people especially those who need us most to reach their full potential as productive caring responsible citizens on October 1 2017 at the Havelock Tourist and Event Center Tony Wood Havelock Advisory Council member emceed the event in which more than 150 people attended The fundraiser raised over ACADEMIC SUCCESS 15 000 for kids and teens at Boys Girls Clubs in Craven County Boys Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain helps to ensure on time We are committed to serving more kids more often with greater graduation and prepare youth for college trade school military impact and we are grateful to the community for their support of or employment On average teachers spend the first 3 6 weeks our Clubs said Kirk Dominick Interim CEO of Boys Girls Clubs of of every school year re teaching material due to summer learning the Coastal Plain loss BGCCP helped combat this summer slump by providing educational programs and organized activities to our students this summer Stop Drop Read is a program where the kids drop everything and read This program brings awareness to the CLUB ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT importance of strong reading skills Carlester T Crumpler Senior Vice President for Bank of America in the Greater Atlanta area was interviewed by current Club kids to see how Club life has changed and how it shaped his future GOOD CHARACTER CITIZENSHIP What was your favorite activity as a Club kid Twenty women from Hyster Yale Group hosted an etiquette class at the I had the opportunity to play sports which helped me gain confidence over time in my ability to Hilton Greenville for female members at Boys Girls Clubs The Girls compete on a higher level I played flag football soccer basketball and baseball at the Club I went Mentoring Program FLI HY is funded by Hyster Yale s Women s Network on to receive an athletic scholarship to college and played in the National Football League And at W41 The program has been providing mentors to middle school girls for no time during my involvement in sports at the Club was it even remotely apparent that I would over three years The etiquette lesson included the dos and don ts of what ever earn an athletic scholarship to go to college nor was it clear that I would ever play in the National Football League Learning how to compete was and is priceless in my book to talk about during a formal dinner how to use different flatware and proper ways to ask for items on the table Members also learned how and where to place their napkins and used utensils when done eating so the wait staff knows to clear their plate Do you think coming to the Club helped you in your career now The Club was my first real diverse and inclusive environment I interacted with kids of different ages races ethnicities We have about 20 Hyster Yale Group volunteers that support the program with ideas event planning and mentoring the and from socio economic statuses and backgrounds The beauty of this was that we were able to learn from one another girls Our purpose is to share things we wished someone had shared with us when we were their age stated Nancy Pinto We had conflicts but with the help of Club leaders like Lucky Harris and Chet Emerson we learned how to process and Girls Mentoring Program FLI HY leader The goal of the program is to provide an event that is fun but educational work through those situations in which reconciled relationships was the end goal Today I can look back and see how transformative my time at the Club was in helping me grow personally HEALTHY LIFESTYLES If you could change one thing about your Club experience what would it be Members of the Sunshine Lady Club started a cooking club in September I would have stayed involved with the Club through high school There s so much more I could have learned about leadership and done from a service standpoint by staying involved with the Keystone Club and volunteering in the community where they are learning the basics of cooking and how to create a simple dish they would be able to cook for themselves at home Our youth at the Jarvis Unit learn to adopt healthy lifestyles and make a lifelong commitment to fitness This year BGCCP partnered with The Scullery What is one of your most memorable moments at the Club a restaurant in Uptown Greenville that provides Club members an educational Volunteering at an older gentleman s house I ll call him Mr Bill who lived a few hundred feet outside the Greenville city cooking class every week limits Our service project for the day was to chop wood for Mr Bill s wood stove That service project was so humbling for me because Mr Bill did not have electricity did not have running water and did not have central heat And although I lived in a struggling middle class apartment community it made me realize how blessed I really was to have those basics Mr Bill expressed gratitude and thanks and shared about his life experiences That experience has inspired me to volunteer PEN PALS somewhere in the community over the past 35 years Boys Girls Club members in Morehead City started a Pen Pal program with an afterschool program in South Dakota In October members had LIKE US FOLLOW US SUPPORT US OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENT 100 of High School seniors graduated in 2016 For more information visit www my hometown is With this partnership we will see our kid s writing skills increase and give opportunities to see what life is like for their peers across the country
