Josiah Bartlet was born (1945) and raised in Manchester, New Hampshire. He is the direct descendent of one of the original signers of the Declaration of Independence. He is one of 2 children, both boys. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy.
Bartlet furthered his education at The University of
Notre Dame where he recieved a bachelor's degree in
American Studies and a minor in Theology. Bartlett then
earned a Master's Degree in Economics from the London
School of Economics.
Bartlett went on to
publish a book entitled,
"Theory and Practice of
Macroeconomics in
Developing Countries." This accomplishment helped him earn a share of the Nobel Prize in Economics.
Bartlet served as State Representative from 1971-1981, a US Congressman from 1989-1995, and then was elected Governor of the State of New Hampshire in 1995-1999.
Josiah Bartlet is married to Abigail Bartlet and has 3 daughters; Elizabeth, Eleanor, and Zoey. He also has 3 grandchildren.
