than these” – why not? הזה תלאש המכחמ אל יכ
because this המכח, these תוראה and heights that
you experienced, הזה תלאש you borrowed them.
Throughout our lives, and during different times
of the Jewish calendar, the ע״שבר lends us as a
gift; certain inspirations and loftiness – allowing
us to artificially achieve certain levels of תוינחור.
The purpose of this loan is to give us a glimpse of
the growth possibilities that lie latent within us.
And when the ע״שבר reclaims His gift, as is often
felt at the close of י ט״ו ,we have what to aspire to
obtain.
Therefore, the deflation felt with the onset of this
period of the year is not a cause for sadness.
Rather, it is an opportunity to recall the emotions
of םיארונ םימי and take encouragement. It is a
chance to utilize the distraction free time that
these long winter month provide, and invest the
effort and diligence to actually truly acquire and
internalize those תושגה that we achieved as a gift
during Yom Tov.
May we all be הכוז to a fulfilling and healthy
winter!
(Based on a shiur of Rav Chaim Kaufman zatzal)
Rabbi Shmuel Ochs
On תוכוס דעומה לוח תבש, we read in תלהק
the timeless words of ךלמה המלש:
“ םיבוט ויה םינושארה םימיהש היה המ רמאת לא
ע תלאש המכחמ אל יכ הלאמהז ל“
Literally translated, המלש is cautioning us
not to say that previous days were better than
these, since you are not questioning why this
is so from a place a wisdom.
Having just completed the תוינחור packed,
and incredibly inspiring days of the םימי
םיארונ, where we experienced the
tremendous תוררועתה and תברק םיקולא
generated by this special time, it is difficult
to understand the words of the הליגמ. With
ןושח upon us, and the concurrent long and
dark winter season ahead, we often feel
deflated and sapped of the tremendous high
that the ט״וי season so recently ended
engendered. We can’t seem to capture that
same תובהלתה. Why would we not look back
nostalgically at the passionate days of םימי
םיארונ?
Rav Shlomo Karliner invites us towards a
more nuanced understanding of the קוספ:
